The scenario
The list runs in your head, and it never stops:
Once I finish this project. Once I get the relationship right. Once I lose the weight. Once I deal with my parents. Once I figure out what I'm supposed to be doing with my life.
Each "once" hands the next "once" the baton. You have been running this race since you were old enough to be told you had potential. Decades go by like this. Some quiet evening you do the math: even if every "once" was checked off tomorrow, you suspect — accurately — that a new list would replace it by Friday.
What the verse actually says
The whole verse turns on a single Sanskrit word: adhunaiva — at this very moment. Adhuna means "now." The eva makes it emphatic: now, exactly now, not later.
Read the verse with that emphasis: "If you separate yourself from the body and rest in awareness, [right now] you will be happy, peaceful, free from bondage." Not eventually. Not after years of practice. Not after you've earned it. Right now.
This is one of the most direct claims in the whole text. Ashtavakra is not saying, try hard for a long time and maybe you'll get there. He is saying: the freedom you keep deferring to a future, fixed, finished version of yourself is available in this moment, because it was never gone.
The work is not building something. The work is a recognition.
How it lands in your life
Most of human suffering is the silent assumption that you are not yet the person you are supposed to be. Some better, calmer, wiser, more put-together you exists in the future, and you are working toward becoming them. Until then, the current you is — implicitly — broken. A draft. A work in progress.
The verse is making a strong claim against this premise: the premise is false. You are not a draft. There is nothing to fix. The cidrūpa — the awareness-nature — that is reading this sentence is not somewhere on a journey toward being awareness. It is awareness, already, completely.
What needs work is the body, the situation, the project, the relationship. Those are real and worth tending to. But the you who is tending to them is not the project. The you is whole, right now, even while the project is broken.
This is not an excuse to stop trying. It is a relocation of where you stand while trying.
A small practice
For the next five minutes, every time the sentence "once I…" arises in your mind, just notice it. Don't argue. Don't engage. Just see it, the way you would notice a bird crossing a window.
Then ask, gently: what is here, before the project is finished? What is here, before the fix?
The answer is not a thought. It is the fact of you, sitting in this room, already complete.
Carry this: There is nothing to wait for. The freedom you are working toward is what is doing the working.
