Part 10 · Being Already Free

From Part 10: On Being Already Free

एको द्रष्टासि सर्वस्य मुक्तप्रायोऽसि सर्वदा। अयमेव हि ते बन्धो द्रष्टारं पश्यसीतरम्॥

eko draṣṭāsi sarvasya muktaprāyo 'si sarvadā ayam eva hi te bandho draṣṭāram paśyasītaram

"You are the one seer of all, and always essentially free. This alone is your bondage: that you see the seer as something other than yourself."

Ashtavakra Gita 1.7

The scenario

Years later.

No fireworks. No epiphany you can describe at a dinner party. No talent for stillness that strangers can spot from across the room. Friends say you seem the same. They are, in one sense, correct.

You went somewhere quieter. You are still going about your day. The dishes still pile up. You still get cranky if you skip lunch. You still occasionally rehearse comebacks at 2AM. Some afternoons you forget everything you supposedly understand and live entirely inside the small neuroses you thought you had grown out of.

And yet — if anyone asks honestly, and you are honest back — something is different. You are not less of a person. You are slightly less at war with the person.

What the verse actually says

The phrase to focus on is "sarvadā"always. Eko draṣṭāsi sarvasya muktaprāyo 'si sarvadā — you are the one seer of all, and have always been essentially free.

Liberation, in Ashtavakra, is not a new acquisition. It is the recognition of what was always the case. Not "you become free." Already free. Always was. The recognition is what changes; the underlying fact does not.

This is why the freed person looks unimpressive. There is nothing to look impressive with. They have not added anything. There was nothing to add. They have simply stopped pretending to be less than what they always were — a small, separate, embattled self that needs to defend itself against a hostile world.

What is left, when that pretense quietly falls away, is what was always here. It looks like nothing. It is, in another sense, everything.

How it lands in your life

People expect awakening to make them special. To set them apart. To grant them an aura, a serenity, an authority that friends will notice and strangers will ask about. The verse gently disagrees. The freed person has not become more. They have simply stopped pretending to be less.

This is why it is unimpressive from the outside. There was nothing to add. There was only an old habit to drop — the habit of treating yourself as a separate, embattled, defended self. Underneath that habit was the same awareness that has been here since the beginning. No addition. No subtraction. Nothing special.

And yet — quietly, in the not-special-ness — the suffering you used to carry is no longer carrying you. The 3AM thoughts still come, sometimes, but they no longer convince you that the building is on fire. The insults still land, sometimes, but they no longer require a response. The pleasures still arrive, sometimes, but you do not have to chase them.

That is the whole point. Not a transformation into someone new. A relaxation back into what you were, all along. No halo. No glow. Just an awareness that has stopped fighting itself.

This is the destination of every chapter of this book. Not enlightenment as an achievement. The recognition that there was no destination — that the awareness that has been reading every page is what you were looking for, and it is what is closing the book now.

A small practice

Don't try to be a person who has read this book.

Don't try to become enlightened. Don't try to be unbothered, equanimous, awakened, or any other thing that would set you apart.

Just notice — for five seconds, several times a day — that the awareness you are sitting in does not need anything to be added to it. It is already exactly what it is.

That noticing is the whole practice. The rest of your life can keep happening.

Carry this: There is no halo. There is just the awareness that has been here all along, no longer at war with itself.
