Cluster 0322 — BG-9.16: *aham kratur aham yajñaḥ . . . aham agnir aham hutam*
BG-9.16
Sanskrit śloka
॥ अहं क्रतुरहं यज्ञः स्वधाहमहमौषधम् । मन्त्रोऽहमहमेवाज्यमहमग्निरहं हुतम् ॥१६॥
Translation: I-AM the kratu (vedic-ritual-action), I-AM the yajña (sacrifice), I-AM the svadhā (ancestor-offering-formula), I-AM the auṣadham (medicinal-plant / oblation-substance); the mantra is I-MYSELF, I-AM the ājyam (clarified-butter), I-AM the agniḥ (sacrificial-fire), I-AM the hutam (the-offering-poured).
The 8-fold aham-aham at the heart of the verse
BG-9.16 is the FOUNDATIONAL 8-FOLD aham-aham SELF-IDENTIFICATION of Kṛṣṇa with the entire ritual-machinery of the vedic-yajña-system. The 8 components — kratu + yajña + svadhā + auṣadha + mantra + ājya + agni + huta — are exhaustive of the pūrva-mīmāmsā ritual-economy: the formal-rite (kratu), the actual-sacrifice (yajña), the pitṛ-offering-formula (svadhā), the oblation-substance / medicinal-plant (auṣadha), the recited-formula (mantra), the clarified-butter (ājya), the sacrificial-fire (agni), and the act-of-pouring-the-offering (huta). The Sanskrit aham is repeated SEVEN TIMES in the śloka (six times explicitly + the seventh in mantro'ham), with aham eva at the central pivot — the most-emphatic aham-anaphora in the entire Gītā.
The doctrinal-thrust is the COMPLETE-SUBSUMPTION of the entire pūrva-mīmāmsā karma-kāṇḍa under the personalist-bhakti aham-of-Kṛṣṇa. The claim is not I-am-one-of-these, nor these-are-forms-of-me, nor I-receive-these — but aham-eva (I-MYSELF) am every-component of the ritual-machinery itself: the resolve, the rite, the formula, the substance, the recitation, the butter, the fire, the offering. The 8-fold catalogue covers every element of the yajña-economy — input-substance, formal-utterance, transformative-medium, and the act-of-transfer — and identifies every-one with the same aham.
Jñāneśvar's 4-ovi compression (9.265-9.268)
Jñāneśvar's 4-ovi treatment is one of the corpus's most-doctrinally-condensed single-cluster treatments — the 8-fold Sanskrit catalog is preserved-and-densified within just 4 ovis:
| # | Marathi-rendering | Sanskrit-mapping | Jñāneśvarian-additions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.265 | muddala vēdu mīchi āhēm + tō kratuhī mīchi | original-Veda + aham kratuḥ | conditional-frame jāṇivēchā udayō; muddala vēdu (original-capital Veda) preface |
| 9.266 | yajñu prakaṭē pāṇḍavā — tōhī mī gā | aham yajñaḥ | sāngōpāngu āghavā (with all limbs); prakaṭē (becomes-manifest) — yajña as emergent-event from kratu-karma |
| 9.267 | svāhā mī svadhā — sōmādi auṣadhī vividhā — ājya mī samidhā — mantru mī havi | aham svadhā + aham auṣadham + aham eva ājyam + mantro'ham + aham hutam (havi) | adds svāhā (deva-call) as natural companion of svadhā; adds samidhā (kindling-wood) as natural companion of ājya |
| 9.268 | hōtā mī — havana kījē — agnī tō svarūpa mājhēm — hutaka vastu jēm jēm — tēhī mīchi | aham agniḥ + aham hutam (generalized) | adds hōtā (officiating-priest); generalizes aham hutam to hutaka vastu jēm jēm (whatever-offered-substance) |
The 4-ovi sequence forms a coherent-progression: 9.265 names the kratu (formal-resolve as progenitor-of-vidhāna) → 9.266 names the yajña (manifest-rite emerging from kratu-karma) → 9.267 enumerates the substances-and-formulas (svāhā, svadhā, auṣadhī, ājya, samidhā, mantra, havi) → 9.268 closes with the actor-medium-event (hōtā, agni, hutaka-vastu). The structural-logic: from FORMAL-CAUSE (kratu) → MANIFEST-EVENT (yajña) → MATERIAL-CAUSES (substances, formulas) → AGENT-MEDIUM-RESULT (priest, fire, offering).
The jāṇivēchā udayō conditional-frame (9.265)
The single most-significant Jñāneśvarian-addition is the opening qualifier at 9.265: tōchi jāṇivēchā jarī udayō hōyē — tarī muddala vēdu mīchi āhēm — IF the dawn of knowing arises, THEN I am the original Veda. The conditional-frame makes-explicit what the Sanskrit aham leaves-implicit: the aham-identification is true-ALWAYS but PERCEIVED only when jñāna-yajña (BG-9.15) has produced the udayō (awakening) of awareness.
This is the doctrinal-pivot connecting BG-9.15 to BG-9.16. BG-9.15 named the jñāna-yajña-yajamāna who ekatvena pṛthaktvena bahudhā viśvato-mukham worships the Lord. BG-9.16 then shows WHAT the jñāna-yajña-yajamāna sees once the udayō of knowing has-arisen: the entire karma-kāṇḍa ritual-machinery is revealed as the SAME aham. The aham-machinery is not produced-by the jñāna-yajña; it is REVEALED-TO the jñāna-yajña-yajamāna. The jñāna-yajña is the EYE, the aham-machinery is what-is-SEEN.
The densest mī-mī anaphora-cascade (9.267)
The rhetorical-climax of the cluster falls at 9.267 with FOUR mī-anchors in one ovi: svāhā mī svadhā — sōmādi auṣadhī vividhā — ājya mī samidhā — mantru mī havi. The five-substance-and-formula-pairs are densified into a tight-anaphora that preserves the Sanskrit aham-repetition while compressing it into the Marathi-ovi-meter. Each mī is structurally-load-bearing: svāhā mī svadhā (svāhā I svadhā — the two ritual-calls), ājya mī samidhā (ājya I samidhā — the two fuel-substances), mantru mī havi (mantra I havi — the spoken-formula and the poured-substance). The cascade is unmatched in density within the entire 4-ovi cluster.
The BG-9.16 ↔ BG-4.24 structural-echo
The cluster's deep inter-Gītā-reference is the systematic-echo with BG-4.24: brahmārpaṇam brahma haviḥ brahmāgnau brahmaṇā hutam — brahmaiva tena gantavyam brahma-karma-samādhinā (the offering is brahman, the oblation is brahman, the fire is brahman, by brahman is the offering poured into the brahman-fire — brahman alone is to be reached by one absorbed in brahma-karma). Where 4.24 said brahma haviḥ / brahmāgni / brahmaṇā hutam (brahman-oblation / brahman-fire / brahman-poured), 9.16 says aham ājyam / aham agniḥ / aham hutam (aham-clarified-butter / aham-fire / aham-poured). The 9.16-aham is the personalist-bhakti completion of the 4.24-brahman: the upaniṣadic-Vedāntic brahman-as-yajña-totality of 4.24 is now-named as the personal aham-of-Kṛṣṇa. Jñāneśvar's 9.268 agnī tō svarūpa mājhēm — hutaka vastu — tēhī mīchi preserves the 4.24-parallelism exactly.
Per-ovi treatment
(The 4 per-ovi blocks are encoded in the YAML frontmatter above with full word-by-word problem-addressed glosses, source-citations with verse-numbers, Tukārām parallels with abhang-ids, and Dnyāneśvarī internal-links. The narrative above traces the four-stage pedagogical arc; the YAML carries the granular per-ovi structure for machine-parsing.)
Arc into BG-9.17
BG-9.17 will OPEN the SECOND aria of aham-identifications: pitāham asya jagato mātā dhātā pitāmahaḥ — vedyam pavitram omkāra ṛk sāma yajur eva ca (I am the father, mother, supporter, grandfather of this world, the known, the purifier, the omkāra, the ṛk-sāma-yajus). Where BG-9.16 named the yajña-machinery aham (kratu + yajña + svadhā + auṣadha + mantra + ājya + agni + huta), BG-9.17 will name the cosmic-relational-role aham (pitā + mātā + dhātā + pitāmaha + vedya + pavitra + omkāra + ṛk + sāma + yajus). The 0322 → 0323 transition is the yajña-machinery-aham → cosmic-relational-role-aham extension within the four-śloka aham-aria of BG-9.16-19. Jñāneśvar's 9.268 closes cluster 0322 with hutaka vastu jēm jēm — tēhī mīchi (whatever-offered-substance, that too is I) — the radical-generalization that prepares the further-generalizations of 9.17-19's relational-roles, existential-anchors, and cosmic-functions.
