Don't be indifferent — fulfill my hope. Listen, listen, Nārāyaṇa — hear my petition. Mother, father, brother-kin — you alone are my kinsman and friend. Tukā: without you, who works my welfare?
The verse
न करीं उदास । माझी पुरवावी आस ॥१॥
ऐका ऐका नारायणा । माझी परिसा विज्ञापना ॥ध्रु.॥
मायबाप बंधुजन । तूं चि सोयरा सज्जन ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे तुजविरहित । माझें कोण करी हित ॥३॥
Literal translation
Don't be udāsa (indifferent); fulfill my āsa (hope). Listen, listen, Nārāyaṇa — hear my vijñāpana (formal-petition). Mother-father-brother-kin — you alone are sōyarā sajjana (kinsman-friend). Tukā says: without you — who works my hita (welfare)?
What it means
A small intimate petition-prayer. Na karī udāsa — mājhī puravāvī āsa — don't be indifferent; fulfill my hope. Udāsa — indifferent, withdrawn, not-paying-attention — is what the bhakta most fears in the protector. The petition is brief and direct.
The dhrūpada: aikā aikā Nārāyaṇā — mājhī parisā vijñāpanā — listen, listen, Nārāyaṇa — hear my formal-petition. The doubled aikā aikā is emphatic. Vijñāpana — a formal-petition, the kind one would file in a court.
The second verse compresses the tūm-chi-mājhā template (see 2425's canonical version): māyabāpa bandhujana — tūm chi sōyarā sajjana — mother, father, brother-kin — you alone are kinsman-friend. All categories of family-relation are collapsed into the single addressee. Sōyarā (kinsman-by-blood-or-marriage) and sajjana (friend, good-person) — both at once.
The close: tujavīm kōṇa karī hita — without you, who works my welfare? The honest-question of someone whose entire support-system has been consolidated into the single relationship.
