नाना सुकृताचें फळ । तो हा नरदेह केवळ ।
त्याहिमधें भाग्य सफळ । तरीच सन्मार्ग लागे
nānā sukṛtācem phaḷa | to hā naradeha kevaḷa |
tyāhimadhem bhāgya saphaḷa | tarīca sanmārga lāge
The fruit of many good works is precisely this human body. Yet only when fortune is truly fruitful does one step onto the good path (sanmārga).
नरदेहीं विशेष ब्राह्मण । त्याहीवरी संध्यास्नान ।
सद्वासना भगवद्भजन । घडे पूर्वपुण्यें
naradehīm viśeṣa brāhmaṇa | tyāhīvarī samdhyāsnāna |
sadvāsanā bhagavadbhajana | ghaḍe pūrvapuṇyem
Within the human body, the brāhmaṇa is special; above that, sandhyā-snāna (ritual bath and meditation); good inclination (sad-vāsanā), Bhagavat-bhajana — these come by previous merit (pūrva-puṇya).
भगवद्भक्ति हे उत्तम । त्याहिवरी सत्समागम ।
काळ सार्थक हाचि परम । लाभ, जाणावा
bhagavadbhakti he uttama | tyāhivarī satsamāgama |
kāḷa sārthaka hāci parama | lābha, jāṇāvā
Bhagavat-bhakti is supreme; above that, the company of the good (sat-samāgama); to fulfill one's time — know this as the supreme gain.
प्रेमप्रीतीचा सद्भाव । आणी भक्तांचा समुदाव ।
हरिकथा मोहोत्साव । तेणें प्रेमा दुणावे
premaprītīcā sadbhāva | āṇī bhaktāmcā samudāva |
harikathā mohotsāva | teṇem premā duṇāve
True feeling of love and affection, gathering of devotees, Hari-kathā-festivals — by these, love (premā) is doubled.
नरदेहीं आलियां येक । कांही करावें सार्थक ।
जेणें पाविजे परलोक । परम दुल्लभ जो
naradehīm āliyām yeka | kāmhī karāvem sārthaka |
jeṇem pāvije paraloka | parama dullabha jo
Having come to the human body, one must do something fulfilling (sārthaka) — that by which one attains the other world (para-loka), rare indeed.
विधियुक्त ब्रह्मकर्म । अथवा दया दान धर्म ।
अथवा करणें सुगम । भजन भगवंताचें
vidhiyukta brahmakarma | athavā dayā dāna dharma |
athavā karaṇem sugama | bhajana bhagavamtācem
Perform Vedic duty lawfully (vidhi-yukta brahma-karma); or compassion, giving, dharma; or the easy path: the worship (bhajana) of the Lord.
अनुतापें करावा त्याग । अथवा करणें भक्तियोग ।
नाहीं तरी धरणें संग । साधुजनाचा
anutāpem karāvā tyāga | athavā karaṇem bhaktiyoga |
nāhīm tarī dharaṇem samga | sādhujanācā
With repentance (anutāpa) perform renunciation (tyāga); or undertake the path of devotion (bhakti-yoga); if not, hold on to the company of sādhus.
नाना शास्त्रें धांडोळावीं । अथवा तीर्थे तरी करावीं ।
अथवा पुरश्चरणें बरवीं । पापक्षयाकारणें
nānā śāstrem dhāmḍoḷāvīm | athavā tīrthe tarī karāvīm |
athavā puraścaraṇem baravīm | pāpakṣayākāraṇem
Delve into many śāstras; or go on pilgrimages (tīrtha); or excellent mantra-repetitions (puraścaraṇa) — for the removal of sin (pāpa-kṣaya).
अथवा कीजे परोपकार । अथवा ज्ञानाचा विचार ।
निरूपणीं सारासार । विवेक करणें
athavā kīje paropakāra | athavā jñānācā vicāra |
nirūpaṇīm sārāsāra | viveka karaṇem
Or do paropakāra; or the reflection on knowledge (jñāna-vicāra); in exposition (nirūpaṇa), practise the discernment of essence-vs-non-essence (sārāsāra-viveka).
पाळावी वेदांची आज्ञा । कर्मकांड उपासना ।
जेणें होइजे ज्ञाना- । आधिकारपात्र
pāḷāvī vedāmcī ājñā | karmakāmḍa upāsanā |
jeṇem hoije jñānā- | ādhikārapātra
Observe the Vedic injunctions; [perform] ritual (karma-kāṇḍa) and worship (upāsanā); by which one becomes fit to receive knowledge (jñāna-adhikārī).
काया वाचा आणी मनें । पत्रें पुष्पें फळें जीवनें ।
कांहीं तरी येका भजनें । सार्थक करावें
kāyā vācā āṇī manem | patrem puṣpem phaḷem jīvanem |
kāmhīm tarī yekā bhajanem | sārthaka karāvem
By body, speech, and mind; by leaves, flowers, fruits, water — by some single act of devotion (bhajana), make [life] fulfilled.
जन्मा आलियाचें फळ । कांहीं करावें सफळ ।
ऐसें न करितां निर्फळ । भूमिभार होये
janmā āliyācem phaḷa | kāmhīm karāvem saphaḷa |
aisem na karitām nirphaḷa | bhūmibhāra hoye
The fruit of being born — make something of it fruitful; without doing so, [one] is a fruitless burden on the earth.
नरदेहाचे उचित । कांहीं करावें आत्महित ।
येथानुशक्त्या चित्तवित्त । सर्वोत्तमीं लावावें
naradehāce ucita | kāmhīm karāvem ātmahita |
yethānuśaktyā cittavitta | sarvottamīm lāvāvem
The fitting thing for the human body: do some good for the Self (ātma-hita); according to capacity, apply mind and wealth to the supreme (sarvottama).
हें कांहींच न धरी जो मनीं । तो मृत्यप्राय वर्ते जनीं ।
जन्मा येऊन तेणें जननी । वायांच कष्टविली
hem kāmhīmca na dharī jo manīm | to mṛtyaprāya varte janīm |
janmā yeūna teṇem jananī | vāyāmca kaṣṭavilī
He who holds none of this in mind lives like one already dead (mṛta-prāya); having come to birth, he has only troubled his mother (jananī) in vain.
नाहीं संध्या नाहीं स्नान । नाहीं भजन देवतार्चन ।
नाहीं मंत्र जप ध्यान । मानसपूजा
nāhīm samdhyā nāhīm snāna | nāhīm bhajana devatārcana |
nāhīm mamtra japa dhyāna | mānasapūjā
[In him] there is no sandhyā, no bath; no bhajana, no deity-worship; no mantra, no japa, no dhyāna; no mental worship (mānasa-pūjā).
नाहीं भक्ति नाहीं प्रेम । नाहीं निष्ठा नाहीं नेम ।
नाहीं देव नाहीं धर्म । अतीत अभ्यागत
nāhīm bhakti nāhīm prema | nāhīm niṣṭhā nāhīm nema |
nāhīm deva nāhīm dharma | atīta abhyāgata
No devotion, no love; no faith (niṣṭhā), no observance (nema); no god, no dharma; no [hospitality to] the wandering guest (atithi).
नाहीं सद्बुद्धि नाहीं गुण । नाहीं कथा नाहीं श्रवण ।
नाहीं अध्यात्मनिरूपण । ऐकिलें कदां
nāhīm sadbuddhi nāhīm guṇa | nāhīm kathā nāhīm śravaṇa |
nāhīm adhyātmanirūpaṇa | aikilem kadām
No good-intellect, no virtue; no story, no listening; no spiritual exposition has ever been heard.
नाहीं भल्यांची संगती । नाहीं शुद्ध चित्तवृत्ती ।
नाहीं कैवल्याची प्राप्ती । मिथ्यामदें
nāhīm bhalyāmcī samgatī | nāhīm śuddha cittavṛttī |
nāhīm kaivalyācī prāptī | mithyāmadem
No company of the good; no pure inclination of mind; no attainment of liberation (kaivalya) — only false pride (mithyā-mada).
नाहीं नीति नाहीं न्याये । नाहीं पुण्याचा उपाये ।
नाहीं परत्रीची सोये । युक्तायुक्त क्रिया
nāhīm nīti nāhīm nyāye | nāhīm puṇyācā upāye |
nāhīm paratrīcī soye | yuktāyukta kriyā
No ethics, no justice; no means to merit (puṇya); no orientation to the hereafter (para-tra); no proper conduct (yukta-ayukta-kriyā).
नाहीं विद्या नाहीं वैभव । नाहीं चातुर्याचा भाव ।
नाहीं कळा नाहीं लाघव । रम्यसरस्वतीचें
nāhīm vidyā nāhīm vaibhava | nāhīm cāturyācā bhāva |
nāhīm kaḷā nāhīm lāghava | ramyasarasvatīcem
No learning, no prosperity; no bhāva of cleverness; no art, no grace; none of the delightful Sarasvatī [i.e., literary culture].
शांती नाहीं क्ष्मा नाहीं । दीक्षा नाहीं मैत्री नाहीं ।
शुभाशुभ कांहींच नाहीं । साधनादिक
śāmtī nāhīm kṣmā nāhīm | dīkṣā nāhīm maitrī nāhīm |
śubhāśubha kāmhīmca nāhīm | sādhanādika
No peace (śānti), no forgiveness (kṣamā); no initiation (dīkṣā), no friendship; nothing auspicious or inauspicious [considered] — no disciplines (sādhana) at all.
सुचि नाहीं स्वधर्म नाहीं । आचार नाहीं विचार नाहीं ।
आरत्र नाहीं परत्र नाहीं । मुक्त क्रिया मनाची
suci nāhīm svadharma nāhīm | ācāra nāhīm vicāra nāhīm |
āratra nāhīm paratra nāhīm | mukta kriyā manācī
No purity (śauca), no own-dharma; no conduct, no reflection; no this-world, no other-world — only an unbridled activity of the mind.
कर्म नाहीं उपासना नाहीं । ज्ञान नाहीं वैराग्य नाहीं ।
योग नाहीं धारिष्ट नाहीं । कांहीच नाहीं पाहातां
karma nāhīm upāsanā nāhīm | jñāna nāhīm vairāgya nāhīm |
yoga nāhīm dhāriṣṭa nāhīm | kāmhīca nāhīm pāhātām
No karma, no upāsanā; no jñāna, no vairāgya; no yoga, no steadfastness — when examined, nothing at all.
उपरती नाहीं त्याग नाहीं । समता नाहीं लक्षण नाहीं ।
आदर नाहीं प्रीति नाहीं । परमेश्वराची
uparatī nāhīm tyāga nāhīm | samatā nāhīm lakṣaṇa nāhīm |
ādara nāhīm prīti nāhīm | parameśvarācī
No turning away (uparati), no renunciation (tyāga); no equanimity (samatā), no [auspicious] sign; no respect, no affection for the Lord.
परगुणाचा संतोष नाहीं । परोपकारें सुख नाहीं ।
हरिभक्तीचा लेश नाहीं । अंतर्यामीं
paraguṇācā samtoṣa nāhīm | paropakārem sukha nāhīm |
haribhaktīcā leśa nāhīm | amtaryāmīm
No delight in others' virtues; no joy in benefaction; not a drop of Hari-bhakti within (antaryāmī).
ऐसे प्रकारीचे पाहातां जन । ते जीतचि प्रेतासमान ।
त्यांसीं न करावें भाषण । पवित्र जनीं
aise prakārīce pāhātām jana | te jītaci pretāsamāna |
tyāmsīm na karāvem bhāṣaṇa | pavitra janīm
Such persons when looked at are living corpses (jīta-preta); one should not even speak with them among pure people.
पुण्यसामग्री पुरती । तयासीच घडें भगवद्भक्ती ।
जें जें जैसें करिती । ते पावती तैसेंचि
puṇyasāmagrī puratī | tayāsīca ghaḍem bhagavadbhaktī |
jem jem jaisem karitī | te pāvatī taisemci
Only when the complete materials of merit (puṇya-sāmagrī) are filled does Bhagavad-bhakti come about; whatever one does, in whatever manner, that very thing one receives.
