चित्त सुचित करावें । बोलिलें तें जीवीं धरावें ।
सावध होऊन बैसावें । निमिष एक
citta sucita karāvem | bolilem tem jīvīm dharāvem |
sāvadha hoūna baisāvem | nimiṣa eka
Make the heart attentive; hold in life what is spoken; sit alert — for a moment.
कोणी एके ग्रामीं अथवा देशीं । राहणें आहे आपणासी ।
न भेटतां तेथिल्या प्रभूसी । सौख्य कैंचें
koṇī eke grāmīm athavā deśīm | rāhaṇem āhe āpaṇāsī |
na bheṭatām tethilyā prabhūsī | saukhya kaimcem
In a certain village or country — one must live; without meeting its lord, where is happiness?
म्हणौनि ज्यास जेथें राहणें । तेणें त्या प्रभूची भेटी घेणें ।
म्हणिजे होय श्लाघ्यवाणें । सर्व कांहीं
mhaṇauni jyāsa jethem rāhaṇem | teṇem tyā prabhūcī bheṭī gheṇem |
mhaṇije hoya ślāghyavāṇem | sarva kāmhīm
Therefore where one lives, one must meet that lord; then all becomes meritorious.
प्रभूची भेटी न घेतां । तेथें कैंची मान्यता ।
आपुलें महत्व जातां । वेळ नाहीं
prabhūcī bheṭī na ghetām | tethem kaimcī mānyatā |
āpulem mahatva jātām | veḷa nāhīm
Without meeting the lord, where is honor there? When one's own greatness goes, there is no time [to recover].
म्हणौनि रायापासूनि रंक । कोणी एक तरी नायक ।
त्यास भेटणें हा विवेक । विवेकी जाणती
mhaṇauni rāyāpāsūni ramka | koṇī eka tarī nāyaka |
tyāsa bheṭaṇem hā viveka | vivekī jāṇatī
Therefore from king to beggar, one must meet some leader; this is discernment — the discerning know.
त्यास न भेटतां त्याचे नगरीं । राहतां धरितील बेगारी ।
तेथें न करितां चोरी । अंगीं लागे
tyāsa na bheṭatām tyāce nagarīm | rāhatām dharitīla begārī |
tethem na karitām corī | amgīm lāge
Without meeting him, living in his city, one is taken for forced-labor; without committing theft there, sin clings to the body.
याकारणें जो शहाणा । तेणें प्रभूसी भेटावें जाणा ।
ऐसें न करितां दैन्यवाणा । संसार त्याचा
yākāraṇem jo śahāṇā | teṇem prabhūsī bheṭāvem jāṇā |
aisem na karitām dainyavāṇā | samsāra tyācā
Therefore the wise one should meet the lord; without doing so, his samsāra is pitiful.
ग्रामीं थोर ग्रामाधिपती । त्याहूनि थोर देशाधिपती ।
देशाधिपतीहूनि नृपती । थोर जाणावा
grāmīm thora grāmādhipatī | tyāhūni thora deśādhipatī |
deśādhipatīhūni nṛpatī | thora jāṇāvā
Greater than the village is the village-chief; greater still the country-chief; greater than that, the king.
राष्ट्राचा प्रभु तो राजा । बहुराष्ट्र तो महाराजा ।
महाराजांचाही राजा । तो चक्रवर्ती
rāṣṭrācā prabhu to rājā | bahurāṣṭra to mahārājā |
mahārājāmcāhī rājā | to cakravartī
A king is the lord of the nation; of many nations, the mahā-rāja; the king of mahārājas is the cakravartī.
एक नरपती एक गजपती । एक हयपती एक भूपती ।
सकळांमध्ये चक्रवर्ती । थोर राजा
eka narapatī eka gajapatī | eka hayapatī eka bhūpatī |
sakaḷāmmadhye cakravartī | thora rājā
One is man-lord, one elephant-lord, one horse-lord, one earth-lord; greater than all is the cakravartī king.
असो ऐशिया समस्तां । एक ब्रह्मा निर्माणकर्ता ।
त्या ब्रह्म्यासही निर्मिता । कोण आहे
aso aiśiyā samastām | eka brahmā nirmāṇakartā |
tyā brahmyāsahī nirmitā | koṇa āhe
Enough — above all such, there is one Brahmā, creator; and of that Brahmā too, who is the creator?
ब्रह्मा विष्णु आणि हर । त्यांसी निर्मिता तोचि थोर ।
तो ओळखावा परमेश्वर । नाना यत्नें
brahmā viṣṇu āṇi hara | tyāmsī nirmitā toci thora |
to oḷakhāvā parameśvara | nānā yatnem
Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Hara — their creator is greater; recognize Him as Parameśvara — by many efforts.
तो देव ठायीं पडेना । तरी यमयातना चुकेना ।
ब्रह्माण्डनायका चोजवेना । हें बरें नव्हे
to deva ṭhāyīm paḍenā | tarī yamayātanā cukenā |
brahmāṇḍanāyakā cojavenā | hem barem navhe
If that Deva cannot be placed, Yama-torment is not escaped; the Lord of the universe cannot be avoided — this is not good.
जेणें संसारीं घातलें । अवघें ब्रह्माण्ड निर्माण केलें ।
त्यासी नाहीं ओळखिलें । तोचि पतित
jeṇem samsārīm ghātalem | avaghem brahmāṇḍa nirmāṇa kelem |
tyāsī nāhīm oḷakhilem | toci patita
He who cast [us] into samsāra, who created the whole universe — not to recognize Him is fallen.
म्हणोनि देव ओळखावा । जन्म सार्थकचि करावा ।
न कळे तरी सत्संग धरावा । म्हणजे कळे
mhaṇoni deva oḷakhāvā | janma sārthakaci karāvā |
na kaḷe tarī satsamga dharāvā | mhaṇaje kaḷe
Therefore recognize God; make birth fruitful; if unknown, hold sat-sanga — then it is known.
जो जाणेल भगवंत । तया नांव बोलिजे संत ।
जो शाश्वत आणि अशाश्वत । निवाडा करी
jo jāṇela bhagavamta | tayā nāmva bolije samta |
jo śāśvata āṇi aśāśvata | nivāḍā karī
He who will know Bhagavān — him call a saint; who resolves the eternal and the non-eternal.
चळेना ढळेना देव । ऐसा ज्याचा अंतर्भाव ।
तोचि जाणिजे महानुभाव । तोचि साधू
caḷenā ḍhaḷenā deva | aisā jyācā amtarbhāva |
toci jāṇije mahānubhāva | toci sādhū
God does not move, does not shake — such is his inner-feeling; he alone is known as mahānubhāva, he alone as sādhu.
जो जनांमध्ये वागे । परी जनांवेगळी गोष्टी सांगे ।
ज्याचे अंतरीं ज्ञान जागे । तोचि साधू
jo janāmmadhye vāge | parī janāmvegaḷī goṣṭī sāmge |
jyāce amtarīm jñāna jāge | toci sādhū
One who moves among people yet speaks apart-from-people-matters; whose jñāna is awake within — he alone is a sādhu.
जाणिजे परमात्मा निर्गुण । त्यासींच म्हणावें ज्ञान ।
त्यावेगळें तें अज्ञान । सर्व कांहीं
jāṇije paramātmā nirguṇa | tyāsīmca mhaṇāvem jñāna |
tyāvegaḷem tem ajñāna | sarva kāmhīm
Recognize Paramātmā as *nirguṇa*; that alone is called jñāna; beyond that, everything is ajñāna.
पोट भरावयाकारणें । नाना विद्या अभ्यास करणें ।
त्यास ज्ञान म्हणती परी तेणें । सार्थक नव्हे
poṭa bharāvayākāraṇem | nānā vidyā abhyāsa karaṇem |
tyāsa jñāna mhaṇatī parī teṇem | sārthaka navhe
For the sake of filling the belly, practicing many sciences — they call it jñāna, but by that, no fulfillment.
देव ओळखावा एक । तेंचि ज्ञान तें सार्थक ।
येर अवघेंचि निरर्थक । पोटविद्या
deva oḷakhāvā eka | temci jñāna tem sārthaka |
yera avaghemci nirarthaka | poṭavidyā
Recognize the one God — that very jñāna is meaningful; the rest is all meaningless — belly-knowledge.
जन्मवरी पोट भरिलें । देहाचें संरक्षण केलें ।
पुढें अवघेंचि व्यर्थ गेलें । अंतकाळीं
janmavarī poṭa bharilem | dehācem samrakṣaṇa kelem |
puḍhem avaghemci vyartha gelem | amtakāḷīm
All life the belly has been filled; the body has been protected; ultimately all becomes vain — at end-time.
एवं पोट भरावयाची विद्या । तियेसी म्हणों नये सद्विद्या ।
सर्वव्यापक वस्तु सद्या । पाविजे तें ज्ञान
evam poṭa bharāvayācī vidyā | tiyesī mhaṇom naye sadvidyā |
sarvavyāpaka vastu sadyā | pāvije tem jñāna
The knowledge of filling the belly should not be called *sad-vidyā*; the substance that is immediately all-pervading — to reach that is jñāna.
ऐसें जयापाशीं ज्ञान । तोचि जाणावा सज्जन ।
तयापासीं समाधान । पुशिलें पाहिजे
aisem jayāpāśīm jñāna | toci jāṇāvā sajjana |
tayāpāsīm samādhāna | puśilem pāhije
He who has such jñāna — him know as the noble; one should ask composure near him.
अज्ञानास भेटतां अज्ञान । तेथें कैंचें सांपडेल ज्ञान ।
करंट्यास करंट्याचें दर्शन । होतां भाग्य कैंचें
ajñānāsa bheṭatām ajñāna | tethem kaimcem sāmpaḍela jñāna |
karamṭyāsa karamṭyācem darśana | hotām bhāgya kaimcem
On meeting ignorance with ignorance, where would knowledge be found? Where a misfortunate meets a misfortunate, where is fortune?
रोग्यापाशीं रोगी गेला । तेथें कैंचें आरोग्य त्याला ।
निर्बळापाशीं निर्बळाला । पाठी कैंची
rogyāpāśīm rogī gelā | tethem kaimcem ārogya tyālā |
nirbaḷāpāśīm nirbaḷālā | pāṭhī kaimcī
A patient going to a patient — where is health for him? The powerless going to the powerless — what support?
पिशाच्यापाशीं पिशाच गेलें । तेथें कोण सार्थक झालें ।
उन्मत्तास उन्मत्त भेटलें । त्यास उमजवी कवणू
piśācyāpāśīm piśāca gelem | tethem koṇa sārthaka jhālem |
unmattāsa unmatta bheṭalem | tyāsa umajavī kavaṇū
A ghost meeting another ghost — what fulfillment happens there? When a madman meets a madman — who will awaken him?
भिकार्यापाशीं मागतां भिक्षा । दीक्षाहीनापाशीं मागतां दीक्षा ।
उजेड पाहतां कृष्णपक्षा । पाविजे कैंचा
bhikāryāpāśīm māgatām bhikṣā | dīkṣāhīnāpāśīm māgatām dīkṣā |
ujeḍa pāhatām kṛṣṇapakṣā | pāvije kaimcā
Asking alms near a beggar; asking initiation near an uninitiated; looking for light in the dark fortnight — whence?
अबद्धापाशीं गेला अबद्ध । तो कैसेनि होईल सुबद्ध ।
बद्धास भेटतां बद्ध । सिद्ध नव्हे
abaddhāpāśīm gelā abaddha | to kaiseni hoīla subaddha |
baddhāsa bheṭatām baddha | siddha navhe
An unbound going to an unbound — how will he become well-bound? A bound meeting a bound — does not become free.
देह्यापाशीं गेला देही । तो कैसेनि होईल विदेही ।
म्हणोनि ज्ञात्यावांचूनि नाहीं । ज्ञानमार्ग
dehyāpāśīm gelā dehī | to kaiseni hoīla videhī |
mhaṇoni jñātyāvāmcūni nāhīm | jñānamārga
A body-bound going to a body-bound — how can he become bodiless? Therefore without a knower, there is no jñāna-path.
याकारणें ज्ञाता पहावा । त्याचा अनुग्रह घ्यावा ।
सारासारविचारें जीवा । मोक्ष प्राप्त
yākāraṇem jñātā pahāvā | tyācā anugraha ghyāvā |
sārāsāravicārem jīvā | mokṣa prāpta
Therefore a knower should be sought; take his blessing; with sārāsāra-vicāra in life — mokṣa is attained.
