Abhanga 20
There comes a place where what you were taught no longer applies — not because the teaching was wrong, but because the situation has gone past the categories the teaching could see in.
The verse

Literal translation
English: What you taught me applies only as long as there is separation between me and Hari. In this state, there is no awareness of the body — who, then, would heed these instructions? Tuka says: the Infinite has sat in my heart; it does not let the permanent and the impermanent be seen as separate any longer.

What it means
This abhang names the epistemological closing of the gopī-arc. The previous 13 abhangs have walked through specific stages — defiance, departure, arrival, deafness, identity-loss, borrowed-strength, rest, solitude, non-duality, play, refusing-companions. 0020 makes a final claim: at the deepest absorption, even the teachings that brought the bhakta this far stop applying. [T]
The first verse is uncomfortable for any teacher. शिकविलें तुम्हीं तें राहे तोंवरी, मज आणि हरी वियोग तों — what you taught me lasts as long as there is separation between me and Hari. The instruction worked while the speaker was on the path; once she has arrived (0017's वेगळीक नव्हे), the instruction has nothing to do. This is not a rejection of the teacher; it is recognition that the teaching had a temporal scope — it was meant to dissolve at the very thing it was instructing toward. [T]
In the present absorption, there is no body-consciousness. Without body-consciousness, there is no addressee for instructions. Words (वचने) need a body-located self to land on; if that self is not currently locatable, the words have no surface. [T]
Verse 3 names the philosophical content of this state: दिसों नेदी नित्य अनित्य तें — the permanent and the impermanent are no longer seen as separate. This is the core Vedantic distinction (नित्य/अनित्य — eternal/temporal — the basis of viveka, discernment) — and it has dissolved. The bhakta is no longer in a state where discerning between is the right operation. [T] [Tradition]
For someone today
English: This abhang is for the person who has been carrying received teaching for a long time and starts to notice it no longer applies. The risk is to assume I have failed the teaching. Tukaram is offering the opposite reading: the teaching has done its job and is now releasing you. The instruction was always meant to be temporary — designed to dissolve at the very thing it was instructing toward. If you have arrived somewhere the instruction can no longer reach, you have not failed; you have graduated.
The harder claim is in the third verse: at the deepest absorption, the categories themselves — permanent and impermanent, real and unreal, important and unimportant — stop being separable. This is the territory Vedanta calls advaita. From the outside it looks like the loss of discernment; from the inside it is a different mode altogether, where the discrimination is no longer operative because there is no longer a separable thing to discriminate from. If you find yourself in a state where you cannot tell anymore what is permanent and what is impermanent — and the inability does not feel like confusion but like rest — you may be in this verse's territory. The teachings about permanent vs impermanent were for an earlier stage; in this stage, the question dissolves rather than being answered.
The very practical version: when you cannot follow rules in a difficult moment, do not panic. चित्तीं बैसला अनंत — the Infinite has sat in your heart. What is seated there is more reliable than the memorized instruction. Trust the seated thing.
Where this applies
-
When a teaching that helped you for years stops applying. Tukaram's reframe: the teaching has done its job. You have arrived past where it can reach. This is not failure; it is graduation.
-
When the framing of permanent vs impermanent stops feeling useful. Trust the dissolution. The categories were tools for a stage; this stage doesn't need them.
-
When you can't follow rules anymore in a difficult moment. चित्तीं बैसला अनंत — what is seated in your heart is more reliable than the memorized rules. Trust the seated thing.
