Abhanga 33
English: This abhang is for the moment when private practice has stopped working and you can feel something has gone slack. The instinct of contemporary spirituality is deeper inward retreat — more solo, more silent, more refined. Tukaram offers the opposite: go to where the crowd is calling out. The jaya-jaya-kāra of others is what wakes up the self that has been quietly sleeping under your private discipline. The collective sound does what solo effort cannot.
The verse
Literal translation
English: I have become alert! I have become alert! I have come to Hari's vigil. There the multitudes of the Vaishnavas (gather), and the jaya-jaya-kāra roars. Sleep has fled — and the obstruction of sin (with it). Tuka says: in that place, there is the moist shade of grace.
Word-by-word gloss
| Marathi | Meaning |
|---|---|
I have become alert / awake" (repeated for emphasis) |
| हरिच्या आलों जागरणा | "I have come to Hari's vigil" (जागरण = night-vigil with devotional singing) |
| वैष्णवांचे भार | "the multitudes of Vaishnavas (devotees)" (भार = a great mass / crowd) |
| जयजयकार गर्जतसे | "the jaya-jaya-kāra (cry of victory/praise) is roaring" |
| होतें पाप आड तें | "what was sinful, the obstruction" |
| ओल छाया कृपेची | "moist shade of grace" (ओल = moist; छाया = shade — together: cool shade) |
What it means
The abhang names collective awakening. The repetition सावध जालों सावध जालों — I have become alert, alert — is itself a sound-pattern, mimicking the kirtan repetitions. The vigil — जागरण — is the warkari practice of all-night devotional singing where the community gathers and the jaya-jaya-kāra repeats until sleep itself flees. This is not private contemplation. The awakening here is collective, sound-driven, body-shaking. [T] [Tradition]
The closing image — ओल छाया कृपेची — the moist shade of grace — is precise. ओल (moist, cool) + छाया (shade) creates the image of a place where one rests after the heat. The vigil is loud, shaking, full — and that very place is a cool shade of grace. The intensity and the rest are the same place. [T]
For someone today
English: This abhang is for the moment when private practice has stopped working and you can feel something has gone slack. The instinct of contemporary spirituality is deeper inward retreat — more solo, more silent, more refined. Tukaram offers the opposite: go to where the crowd is calling out. The jaya-jaya-kāra of others is what wakes up the self that has been quietly sleeping under your private discipline. The collective sound does what solo effort cannot.
The deeper teaching: the intensity of the kirtan and the shade of grace are not opposites; they are the same place. People who avoid loud devotional gatherings because they prefer "real depth" sometimes miss that depth lives, here, inside the loudness. The cool shade is on the other side of the roar.
Where this applies
- When solo practice has stopped working. Try the company you've been avoiding. The collective sound does work the inner discipline cannot.
- When you find yourself unexpectedly awake at a gathering. The jaya-jaya-kāra did it. Note the mechanism.
- When you've been resisting communal devotion as unrefined. Ask whether the resistance is sophistication or pride. Tukaram says the moist shade is there.
