Abhanga 437

Stay awake to the divine in ordinary life, keep worship simple, don't burden yourself with excess, and give the one offering that truly matters: undivided devotion.

When the jaga-jogī comes to the nagara asking dāna — and you have to recognize this register
When the entire kṣetra-pāḷa is to receive pūjā — and you accept this universal-ritual
When give ananya — and you receive this petition for undivided-gift

What it means

A jaga-jogī-form abhang. Continuation of the folk-mendicant-singer-form, after the Vāsudeva-form (432-434). The jaga-jogī is a yogī-form mendicant (jōgī = yōgī), distinct from the Vāsudeva. Six claims:

  1. जग जोगी जग जोगी — जागजागे बोलतीjaga-jogī jaga-jogī — at every wake, they speak. The opening-call: thejaga-jogī(world-yogī) — at every place where someone is waking — they (the jōgīs) speak. The jōgī walks calling.

  2. जागता जगदेव — राखा कांहीं भावthe waking jaga-deva — keep some bhāva. The primary-claim: thejaga-deva(world-deity) is awake; keep somebhāva(devotion-stance). Be aware of the awake-deity.

The universal-pūjā claim: the entirekṣetra-pāḷa(place-keeper / land-deity)all (forms of pūjā). Pūjā in all forms is to the same place-keeper.

The minimum-pūjā items: the offering-vessel — at leastfala(fruit),puṣpa(flower),tōya(water). (The minimum-set; compare Bhagavad-gītā 9.26 patram puṣpam phalam tōyam.)

  5. बहुतां दिसां फेरा आला या नगराmany days the phērā — came to this nagara. The long-circuit claim: for many days, the round — has come to this town. The mendicant-circuit reaches every town in time.

  6. नका घेऊं भार — धर्म तो चि सारdon't take bhāra — dharma alone is sāra. The minimum-investment-rule: don't take heavy-burden; dharma alone is the essence.

The closing-petition: Tuka asks fordāna; give —ananya(undivided / without-second / single-pointed). The dāna asked isananyaundivided devotion, the highest-bhakti.

For someone today

In this verse Tukaram speaks in the voice of a wandering yogi-mendicant walking through town, calling out wherever someone is waking up. His message is simple: the divine in the world is awake, so keep at least a little devotion alive in response. He says every shrine and every place-guardian is really receiving worship meant for the same one presence, so there's no need to fragment your devotion chasing different forms. The offering itself doesn't need to be grand either, a piece of fruit, a flower, some water is enough. Don't load yourself down trying to do more than that, since the heart of dharma is simplicity, not accumulation. In the end what Tuka asks for isn't money or things but undivided devotion, given wholly and without holding anything back.
