Abhanga 3654
Having let go of possessiveness and stepped into the open, you need real acknowledgment from those you depend on, or you are left exposed and unprotected.
The verse
Literal translation
Manāchiye sākṣī jālī sāngōm māta — by mind's witness, telling-story; sakaḷa vrttānta āpalā tō — all account is mine. Tumhām parāmrśa gheṇe sattābaḷe — you take paramṛśa by authority-strength; dharitām nirāḷe kaisīm vāmchōm — holding separate, how (do we) live. Mī mājhe sāṇḍūna yāvayā pasārā — abandoning mī-mājhe, coming to pasāra; āṇīka dātārā kāya kāja — to whom else is the work, dātāra. Tukā mhaṇe āmhī tujaviṇa ekā — Tukā says: we without you alone; niḍhaḷe laukikā mājī asōm — stay niḍhaḷe in laukika.
What it means
Tukārām's mind-witness petition: without-you, mī-mājhe-abandoned, in-pasāra (open), niḍhaḷe (exposed).
For someone today
Tukaram speaks with his own mind as witness, owning the whole story as his responsibility. He asks God to actually recognize and acknowledge him, because being kept at a distance leaves him wondering how he can survive. Having given up his sense of possessiveness, of mine and not mine, and stepped into the open, he asks whose job this recognition is if not the Giver's. Without that connection, he says plainly, he stands exposed and unprotected in the ordinary world.
