salokatā samīpatā | svarūpatā sāyojyatā | yā catvāra muktī tatvatām | icchā seūni rāhile
Sāloka, sāmīpya, sārūpa, sāyojya — these four liberations, in truth, choosing among them, [they] remained.
aise siddha sādhū samta | svahitā pravartale anamta | aisā hā naradeha vikhyāta | kāya mhaṇauna varṇāvā
Such siddhas, sādhus, saints — countless have undertaken their own welfare. This renowned human body — how is it to be described?
yā naradehāceni ādhārem | nānā sādhanāmceni dvārem | mukhya sārāsāravicārem | bahuta suṭale
Through the support (ādhāra) of this human body, through the door of many disciplines, principally by the reasoning of essence-vs-non-essence (sārāsāra-vicāra) — many have been freed.
yā naradehāceni sammamdhem | bahuta pāvale uttama padem | ahamtā sāmḍūna svānamde | sukhī jāle
By relation to this human body, many have attained the highest ranks; having discarded ego-sense (ahamtā), they became happy in self-bliss (svānanda).
naradehīm yeūna sakaḷa | udharāgatī pāvale kevaḷa | yethem samśayācem mūḷa | khamḍona gelem
Coming into the human body, all have attained the upward movement (uddhara-gati); here the root of doubt (samśaya-mūla) has been severed.
paśudehīm nāhīm gatī | aise sarvatra bolatī | mhaṇauna naradehīmca prāptī | paralokācī
In the animal body there is no further progress (gati) — so everyone says; therefore only in the human body is the attainment of the other world (para-loka-prāpti).
samta mahamta ṛṣī munī | siddha sādhū samādhānī | bhakta mukta brahmajñānī | virakta yogī tapasvī
Saints, great ones, ṛṣis, munis; siddhas, sādhus, the composed; devotees, the liberated, Brahman-knowers; the dispassionate, yogis, ascetics —
tattvajñānī yogābhyāsī | brahmacyārī digambara samnyāsī | śaḍadarśanī tāpasī | naradehīmca jāle
Tattva-knowers, yoga-practitioners; brahmacārīs, naked (digambara) ones, sannyāsīs; followers of the six darśanas, tāpasas — [all] came into being in the human body.
mhaṇaunī naradeha śreṣṭha | nānā dehāmmadhyem variṣṭha | jayāceni cuke āriṣṭa | yemayātanecem
Therefore the human body is supreme (śreṣṭha), chief among many bodies; by which the calamity (ariṣṭa) of the Yama-torture is averted.
naradeha hā svādhena | sahasā navhe parādhena | paramtu hā paropakārīm jhijaūna | kīrtirūpem uravāvā
The human body is self-controlling (svādhīna), never wholly other-dependent; but it should be worn down in service to others (paropakāra) and left behind in the form of fame (kīrti-rūpa).
aśva vṛṣabha gāī mhaisī | nānā paśu striyā dāsī | kṛpāḷūpaṇem soḍitām tyāmsī | koṇī tarī dharīla
Horses, bulls, cows, buffalo; many beasts, women, maid-servants — kind-heartedly releasing any of them, someone [else] will just [re]bind them.
taisā navhe naradeho | ichā jāva athavā raho | parī yāsa koṇī pāho | bamdhana karūm sakenā
Not so the human body: whether desire remain or depart, for it — no one can impose binding.
naradeha pāmguḷa asatā | tarī to kāryāsa na yetā | athavā thomṭā jarī asatā | tarī paropakārāsa na ye
If the human body were lame (pānguḷa), it would not serve a purpose; or if it were limbless (thoṇṭā), it would not serve benefit to others.
naradeha amdha asilā | tarī to nipaṭaci vāyām gelā | athavā badhira jarī asilā | tarī nirūpaṇa nāhīm
If the human body were blind (andha), it would be altogether wasted; or if deaf (badhira), then there is no exposition (nirūpaṇa).
naradeha asilā mukā | tarī ghetām na ye āśamkā | aśakta rogī nāsakā | tarī to niḥkāraṇa
If the human body is mute (mūkā), then one's doubts cannot be received; if weak, diseased, decaying — then it is without purpose (niḥkāraṇa).
naradeha asilā mūrkha | athavā phemparyā samamdhācem duḥkha | tarī to jāṇāvā nirārthaka | niścayemsīm
If the human body is foolish (mūrkha), or afflicted with epilepsy or possession — know it with certainty to be purposeless.
itakem hem nastām vemga | naradeha āṇī sakaḷa sāmga | teṇem dharāvā paramārthamārga | lāgavegem
Without such deficiencies, the human body complete (sānga) — with it one should pursue the paramārtha-mārga swiftly.
sāmga naradeha joḍalem | āṇī paramārthabuddhi visarle | tem mūrkha kaisem bhramalem | māyājāḷīm
The complete human body has been obtained, and the intellect for paramārtha is forgotten? How has that fool become deluded — caught in the net of māyā (māyā-jāla)?
mṛttikā khāṇona ghara kelem | tem mājhem aisem dṛḍha kalpilem | parī tem bahutāmcem hem kaḷalem | nāhīmca tayāsī
Mud is dug and a house is made; "mine" is firmly imagined of it; but that it is the home of many, [the fool] has not understood at all.

Thieves say "our house"; tax-men say "our house"; fire says "our house — we shall reduce it to ash."
samasta mhaṇatī ghara mājhem | hem mūrkhahi mhaṇe mājhem mājhem | sevaṭa jaḍa jālem vojhem | ṭākilā deśa
All say "the house is mine"; the fool too says "mine, mine." In the end the burden grows heavy, and the country is abandoned.
avaghīm gharem bhamgalīm | gāmvāmcī pāmḍharī paḍilī | maga tem gṛhīm rāhilīm | āraṇyasvāpadem
All houses break down; the village settlement (pāṇḍharī) lies abandoned; then in those homes, wild animals of the forest (āraṇya-svāpada) come to dwell.
kiḍā mumgī vāḷavī mūṣaka | tyāmcemca ghara hem niścayātmaka | hem prāṇī bāpuḍem mūrkha | nighona gelem
The worm, the ant, the termite, the mouse — their house, certainly, it is. The living creature, poor fool, has simply left and gone.
aisī gṛhāmcī sthitī | mithyā ālī ātmapracītī | janma dom disāmcī vastī | koṭhem tarī karāvī
Such is the [true] state of houses; their 'mine-ness' has come into self-experience as false (mithyā). Life is a two-day dwelling — to be stayed somewhere, briefly.
deha mhaṇāvem āpulem | tarī hem bahutāmkāraṇem nirmilem | prāṇīyāmcyā māthām ghara kelem | vā mastakīm bhakṣitī
Should one say the body is one's own? But it has been made for many purposes. The [parasites'] house is built on the head of the living, on the skull they feed.
romemuḷī kiḍe bhakṣitī | khāmḍuka jālyām kiḍe paḍatī | poṭāmadhye jamta hotī | pratyakṣa prāṇiyāmcyā
Creatures eat at hair-roots (roma-mūla); when wounds appear, worms settle in; in the belly, worms are born — visibly, in living creatures.
kīḍa lāge dāmtāsī | kīḍa lāge ḍoḷyāmsī | kīḍa lāge karṇāsī | āṇī gomāśā bharatī
Worm-decay affects the teeth; the eyes; the ears; and flies swarm [around the body].
gociḍa aśuddha sevitī | cāmavā māmsāmta ghusatī | pisoḷe cāūna paḷatī | akasmāta
Ticks drink blood; skin-lice (cāmavā) enter into the flesh; stinging insects bite and flee — suddenly.
bhomgem gāmdhemlem cāvitī | gombī jaḷavā aśuddha ghetī | vimcū sarpa damśa karitī | kānaṭem phursīm
Horseflies and wasps bite; leeches take blood; scorpions and snakes sting; the kāṇaṭa and phūrsī [venomous serpents strike].
janmūna deha pāḷilem | tem akasmāta vyāghrem nelem | kām tem lāmḍagīmca bhakṣilem | baḷātkārem
Having been born, the body was nurtured; suddenly a tiger carried it off. Or wolves devoured it — by force.
mūṣakem mārjarem damśa karitī | svānem aśvem lole toḍitī | rīsem markaṭem māritī | kāsāvīsa karūnī
Mice and cats bite; dogs and horses tear the flesh; bears and monkeys kill — reducing [the body] to a wretched state.
uṣṭarem ḍasona icalitī | hasthī cirḍūna ṭākitī | vṛṣabha ṭocūna māritī | akasmāta
Camels bite and drag off; elephants trample and discard; bulls gore and kill — suddenly.
taśkara taḍataḍām toḍitī | bhūtem jhaḍapona māritī | aso yā dehācī sthitī | aisī ase
Thieves sever [limbs] suddenly; ghosts seize and kill. Enough — this is the state of this body.
aisem śarīra bahutāmcem | mūrkha mhaṇe āmucem | paramtu khājem jivāmcem | tāpatraim bolilem
Such a body belonging to many — the fool says 'ours.' But [the body] is the food of [other] creatures — so the threefold misery (tāpa-trayā) is spoken of.
deha paramārthīm lāvilem | tarīca yācem sārthaka jālem | nāhīm tarī hem verthacī gelem | nānā āghātem mṛtyapamthem
If the body is applied to paramārtha, only then does it become fulfilled (sārthaka); otherwise it has gone in vain, through many blows on the path of death (mṛtyu-pantha).
aso je prapamcika mūrkha | te kāye jāṇatī paramārthasukha | tyā mūrkhāmcem lakṣaṇa kāmhīm yeka | puḍhe bolilem ase
And so, [as for] the worldly fools (prapañcik mūrkha) — what do they know of the joy of paramārtha? Some of the signs of that fool will be described next.
