aikā sadvidyecīm lakṣaṇem | parama śuddha sulakṣaṇem |
vicāra ghetām baḷemci bāṇe | sadvidyā āmgīm
Hear the signs of true-knowledge (sad-vidyā) — supremely pure, of excellent marks; by applying reasoning, sad-vidyā becomes forcefully ingrained (bāṇe) in the body.
Rāmdās opens by promising to describe the marks (lakṣaṇe) of sad-vidyā — true or sound knowledge, distinguished from mere information. He states the method up front: it is not innate but becomes 'forcefully ingrained in the body' through sustained reasoning (vicāra), meaning it is earned by reflection, not received passively.
Do not expect real understanding to arrive by hearing something once; actively reason through an idea repeatedly until it changes how you act, not just what you can repeat.
sadvidyecā jo puruṣa | to uttamalakṣaṇī viśeṣa |
tyāce guṇa aikatām samtoṣa | parama vāṭe
The man of sad-vidyā — he is outstanding in excellent marks; hearing his qualities, supreme contentment arises.
Before listing individual traits (which begin at 2.8.003), Rāmdās frames the whole exercise: a person who genuinely possesses sad-vidyā stands out, and merely hearing an account of their qualities brings the listener contentment — the portrait itself is meant to be inspiring, not just descriptive.
When you encounter someone of real integrity, pay attention to the quiet satisfaction it gives you — let that response guide you toward emulating them, not just admiring them from a distance.
bhāvika sātvika premaḷa | śāmti kṣmā dayāsīḷa |
līna tatpara kevaḷa | amṛtavacanī
Pious, sāttvic, loving; peace, forgiveness, compassionate; humble, attentive, of nectar-speech (amṛta-vacanī).
The first cluster of qualities: pious, sāttvic (calm, clear-natured), loving; possessed of peace and forgiveness; compassionate, humble, attentive, and speaking words like nectar. This opens the long catalogue with the emotional and relational virtues before moving to intellectual and social ones.
Practice one small version today: soften your next sentence to someone so it lands like 'nectar' rather than merely accurate — kindness in delivery is part of this virtue, not separate from it.
parama sumdara āṇī catura | parama sabaḷa āṇī dhīra |
parama sampanna āṇī udāra | ātiśayemsīm
Supremely beautiful and clever; supremely strong and steady (dhīra); supremely prosperous and generous — to excess.
The catalogue continues into paired excellences: beauty and cleverness, strength and steadiness (dhīra), prosperity and generosity — each pair joined 'to excess' (ātiśayem), meaning Rāmdās is describing an ideal rather than an attainable checklist, useful as aspiration.
Where you have some natural advantage — intelligence, resources, strength — pair it deliberately with its complementary virtue (generosity, steadiness) so the advantage does not stand alone.
parama jñātā āṇī bhakta | māhā pamḍīta āṇī virakta |
māhā tapasvī āṇī śāmta | ātiśayemsīm
Supreme knower and devotee; great pandit and dispassionate; great ascetic and peaceful — to excess.
More paired excellences: supreme knowledge and devotion together, great learning (paṇḍita) joined with dispassion (virakta), and great asceticism joined with peace — Rāmdās keeps insisting that intellectual or ascetic achievement means little without its emotional counterpart.
If you pursue expertise or discipline in any area, check that it is producing calm and detachment in you, not just credentials or willpower — the pairing is the point.
vaktā āṇī nairāśatā | sarvajña āṇī sādaratā |
śreṣṭha āṇī namratā | sarvatrāmsī
Speaker and non-expectant (nairāśya); all-knowing and attentive; senior and humble — toward all.
Continuing the paired structure: one who can speak well yet expects nothing in return (nairāśya); one who is all-knowing yet still attentive to others; one who is senior or eminent yet humble toward everyone (sarvatrāmsī) — status repeatedly checked by its opposite virtue.
The next time you are in a position of authority or expertise, deliberately practice the humbling half of the pair — stay attentive and modest precisely where you could coast on status.
rājā āṇī dhārmika | śūra āṇī viveka |
tāruṇya āṇī nemaka | ātiśayemsīm
King and righteous (dhārmika); hero and discerning (viveka); youth and observant (nemaka) — to excess.
The pattern extends to worldly roles: a king who is also righteous, a hero who is also discerning (viveka), a youth who is also disciplined and observant (nemaka) — power, courage, and vigor are each incomplete, in Rāmdās's view, without their moral complement.
Wherever you hold some form of power or vitality — youth, courage, seniority — pair it with discipline rather than treating the power itself as sufficient.
vṛdhācārī kuḷācārī | yuktāhārī nirvikārī |
dhanvamtarī paropakārī | padmahastī
Elder-tradition-observer, family-observer; moderate-eater (yukta-āhārī), unagitated (nir-vikārī); [skilled as] physician, benefactor, generous-handed (padma-hastī).
A more concrete cluster: observant of elder and family tradition, moderate in eating (yuktāhārī), unagitated in temperament, and — practically — skilled enough to heal, benefit others, and give generously, like a folk-physician (dhanvantarī) whose hands do good.
Bring your practice down to something physical and concrete this week: moderate your eating and use your actual skills to help someone tangibly, not only in intention.
kāryakartā nirābhimānī | gāyaka āṇī vaiṣṇava janī |
vaibhava āṇī bhagavadbhajanī | atyādarem
Active in duty (kārya-kartā), free of conceit (nirabhimānī); singer and Vaiṣṇava among people; prosperous and with utmost regard for Bhagavad-bhajana.
Active in one's duties yet free of conceit about them; a singer and a devotee among ordinary people (vaiṣṇava janī — not set apart); prosperous yet giving the utmost regard to worship. The stress falls on doing real work without letting ego or wealth distort it.
Do your work fully but notice if pride is creeping into how you talk about it — aim to be recognized for the work itself, not for being seen doing it.
tatvajña āṇī udāsīna | bahuśruta āṇī sajjana |
mamtrī āṇī saguṇa | nītivamta
Tattva-knower and dispassionate (udāsīna); well-heard (bahu-śruta) and noble; minister (mantrī) and virtuous (saguṇa); ethical (nīti-vanta).
Knower of fundamental truth (tattva) yet dispassionate (udāsīna); widely learned (bahu-śruta) yet noble in character; capable as a counselor (mantrī) yet virtuous and ethical (nīti-vanta) — again knowledge and capability are only praised when joined to character.
Before giving advice or counsel to someone, check that your motive is their good and not your own display of knowledge.
ādhu pavitra puṇyasīḷa | amtaraśuddha dharmātmā kṛpāḷa |
karmaniṣṭha svadharmem nirmaḷa | nirlobha anutāpī
Devout, pure, merit-disciplined; inwardly pure, dharma-souled, compassionate; ritually steadfast, clear in own-dharma; greedless, repentant.
A denser cluster of inner qualities: devout, pure, disciplined by merit; inwardly clean, dharma-souled, compassionate; steadfast in ritual duty, clear within one's own proper role (svadharma); free of greed, and capable of genuine repentance (anutāpī) when at fault.
Practice the specific combination named here: when you err, actually feel and act on repentance rather than rationalizing — that responsiveness is treated as a mark of purity, not weakness.
goḍī āvaḍī paramārthaprītī | sanmārga satkriyā dhāraṇā dhṛtī |
śruti smṛtī līḷā yukti | stutī matī parīkṣā
Sweetness-and-love, affection for paramārtha; good-path, good-action, retentive power (dhāraṇā), steadfastness (dhṛti); śruti, smṛti, līlā, yukti; praise, intellect, examination.
Delight and affection specifically for the highest good (paramārtha); commitment to the good path and good action; strong retentive memory (dhāraṇā) and steadfastness (dhṛti); familiarity with scripture (śruti, smṛti), story (līlā), reasoning (yukti), praise, intellect, and critical examination.
Cultivate genuine enjoyment of your practice, not grim duty — the verse pairs love of the goal with the discipline (memory, steadfastness) needed to sustain it.
dakṣa dhūrta yogya tārkika | satyasāhitya nemaka bhedaka |
kuśaḷa capaḷa camatkārika | nānā prakārem
Skillful, shrewd, fit, logical; true-and-helpful, observant, penetrating; capable, nimble, marvelous — in many modes.
Skillful, shrewd, capable, logical; truthful in what one says and genuinely helpful with it; observant and penetrating in understanding; capable, nimble, and even remarkable — in many different modes of engagement with the world.
Aim for competence that is also honest and useful to others — cleverness alone, without truthfulness and helpfulness, is explicitly not enough here.
ādara sanmāna tārtamya jāṇe | prayogasamayo prasamga jāṇe |
kāryākāraṇa cinhem jāṇe | vicakṣaṇa bolikā
Knows respect, honor, proportion; knows the time for procedure, knows the occasion; knows the signs of cause-and-effect; discerning, articulate.
Social intelligence: knowing the right degree of respect and honor due in a situation, knowing the right timing for action, recognizing cause-and-effect signals, and being discerning and articulate in speech — practical wisdom about people and occasions.
Before speaking or acting in a delicate situation, pause to read the occasion and the appropriate degree of formality — timing and proportion matter as much as content.
sāvadha sākṣepī sādhaka | āgama nigama śodhaka |
jñānavijñāna bodhaka | niścayātmaka
Attentive, eager, practitioner (sādhaka); investigator of āgama (revealed texts) and nigama (tradition); instructor of knowledge and special-knowledge (jñāna-vijñāna); of firm resolution.
Attentive, earnest, a genuine practitioner (sādhaka); an investigator of both revealed scripture (āgama) and received tradition (nigama); an instructor able to teach both ordinary and special knowledge (jñāna-vijñāna); and firm in resolve (niścayātmaka).
Do not let curiosity substitute for commitment: investigate a teaching thoroughly, but also carry it through to firm, resolved practice rather than endless exploration.
puraścaraṇī tīrthavāsī | dhṛḍhavratī kāyāklesī |
upāsaka, nigrahāsī- | karūm jāṇe
Mantra-repetition-observer, pilgrimage-dweller; firm in vows, body-chastening (kāya-kleśī); worshipper; he knows how to practice restraint (nigraha).
More ascetic markers: one who performs sustained mantra-repetition, dwells at pilgrimage sites, holds firm to vows, disciplines the body, worships regularly, and — crucially — knows how to exercise restraint (nigraha) over impulses, the practical skill underlying all the rest.
Practice restraint deliberately in one specific area today — an impulse you usually indulge — since this verse treats restraint as a learnable skill, not a fixed trait.
satyavacanī śubhavacanī | komaḷavacanī yekavacanī |
niścayavacanī saukhyavacanī | sarvakāḷa
True-speaking, auspicious-speaking; soft-speaking, truth-to-one-word (eka-vacanī); resolute-speaking, joy-speaking — always.
An entire ovī devoted to speech: truthful, auspicious, gentle, consistent to one's word (eka-vacanī), resolute, and pleasant — always (sarvakāḷa), meaning this is not occasional good manners but a constant discipline of how one speaks.
Audit your speech for one full day against these five marks — true, auspicious, gentle, consistent, resolute — and notice where you slip.
vāsanātṛpta sakhola yogī | bhavya suprasanna vītarāgī |
saumya sātvika śuddhamārgī | niḥkapaṭa nirvesanī
Tendency-satisfied (vāsanā-tṛpta), a deep yogi; grand, gracious, passion-freed; gentle, sāttvic, on the pure path; uncynical, vice-less.
Inner satisfaction and depth: tendencies fulfilled rather than starved (vāsanā-tṛpta), a deep yogi, grand yet gracious, free of passion; gentle, sāttvic, on the pure path; free of cynicism and of vice — describing a settled inner economy, not restless craving.
Notice where restless craving is driving your choices and address the underlying want directly, rather than letting it leak out as cynicism or minor vice.
sugaḍa samgīta guṇagrāhī | anāpekṣī lokasamgrahī |
ārjava sakhya sarvahi | prāṇīmātrāsī
Well-shaped, harmonious, quality-gatherer; unexpectant, people-collector; upright, friendly — to every living creature.
Well-formed, harmonious, quick to recognize good qualities in others (guṇa-grāhī); expecting nothing in return, a gatherer of people (loka-saṅgrahī); straightforward and friendly — to every living creature, not just to fellow humans.
Practice noticing and naming a good quality in someone today, and extend basic friendliness beyond your usual circle, including to animals and strangers.
dravyasucī dārāsucī | nyāyasucī amtarasucī |
pravṛttisucī nivṛttisucī | sarvasucī niḥsamgapaṇem
Pure in wealth, pure in [dealings with] wife; pure in judgment, pure within; pure in engagement, pure in renunciation — all-pure by non-attachment (niḥsanga-paṇā).
A fourfold purity: pure in the handling of wealth, pure in relations with one's spouse, pure in judgment, and pure within — pure equally in engagement with the world (pravṛtti) and in renunciation of it (nivṛtti) — the whole achieved 'by non-attachment' (niḥsaṅga-paṇā), not by rigid rule-following.
Check one area — money, a relationship, or a decision — for hidden self-interest disguised as principle; non-attachment, not rule-keeping, is the actual test named here.
mitrapaṇem parahitakārī | vāgmādhurya paraśokahārī |
sāmarthyapaṇem vetradhārī | purūṣārthem jagamitra
Beneficent to others as a friend; speech-sweetness that dispels others' sorrow; wielder of the staff by capacity — friend of the world by his manliness (puruṣārtha).
Socially: a true friend who acts for others' benefit, sweet enough in speech to dispel others' sorrow, capable enough to act with authority (the 'staff-wielder,' vetra-dhārī) when needed, and, through sheer manly effort (puruṣārtha), a friend to the whole world.
Use your words today specifically to lighten someone's sorrow, and be willing to step in with firm action when a situation actually calls for it, not just sympathy.
samśayachedaka viśāḷa vaktā | sakaḷa kḷpta asonī śrotā |
kathānirūpaṇīm śabdārthā | jāūmca nedī
Doubt-severer, wide speaker; [even] when all [is known to him], still a listener; will not let meaning escape — in story and exposition.
In teaching contexts: one who cuts through doubt and speaks expansively, yet remains a listener even when he already knows everything (kḷpta), and who, in exposition or storytelling, never lets the meaning of the words slip away unexamined.
Even when you already know the answer, keep listening fully before responding — real teaching includes staying receptive, not just delivering conclusions.
vevādarahita samvādī | samgarahita niropādhī |
durāśārahita akrodhī | nirdoṣa nirmatsarī
Free of argument, a conversationalist (samvādī); unattached, without limiting conditions; without false-hope, without anger; flawless, without envy.
Free of contentiousness yet genuinely conversational (saṃvādī); unattached and unencumbered by conditions (niropādhī); free of false hope and free of anger; without fault, without envy — a portrait of someone whose relational friction has been worn away.
Notice where envy or unrealistic hope colors a current relationship, and work specifically to release that, since it is named here as a distinct obstacle from anger or fault.
vimaḷajñānī niścayātmaka | samādhānī āṇī bhajaka |
siddha asonī sādhaka | sādhana rakṣī
Of pure knowledge, resolute; composed and devoted; being siddha, yet [acts as] sādhaka — guards the discipline (sādhana).
Of unclouded knowledge and firm resolve; composed and devoted; and — the paradox Rāmdās highlights — though already accomplished (siddha), still acting as a practitioner (sādhaka), continuing to guard and maintain the discipline rather than abandoning it once attained.
If you have already made real progress in some practice, resist the temptation to stop maintaining it; keep guarding the discipline as if still learning.
sukharūpa samtoṣarūpa | ānamdarūpa hāsyarūpa |
aikyarūpa ātmarūpa | sarvatrāmsī
Happiness-form, contentment-form; bliss-form, laughter-form; unity-form, Self-form — for all.
A shift to describing inner radiance rather than discrete traits: 'happiness-formed, contentment-formed, bliss-formed, laughter-formed, unity-formed, Self-formed' — for all beings equally, suggesting the sad-vidyā person's very presence has become a source of these states for others.
Notice whether your presence tends to add contentment or laughter to a room, or drains it — treat your emotional effect on others as part of your practice, not incidental to it.
bhāgyavamta jayavamta | rūpavamta guṇavamta |
ācāravamta kriyāvamta | vicāravamta sthitī
Fortunate, victorious; handsome, virtuous; conduct-possessing, activity-possessing; reflection-possessing in his state.
Fortunate and victorious, handsome and virtuous, possessed of good conduct and good action, established in reflection — Rāmdās here lets external good fortune stand alongside inner virtue, treating flourishing itself as a fitting outcome of this character.
Do not treat outward success and inner virtue as opposites; let good conduct and genuine reflection be what you credit when things go well, rather than luck alone.
yeśavamta kirtivamta | śaktivamta sāmarthyavamta |
vīryavamta varadavamta | satyavamta sukṛtī
Famous, illustrious; powerful, capable; vigorous, blessed; truthful, meritorious.
Famous and illustrious, powerful and capable, vigorous and blessed, truthful and meritorious — continuing the same theme, that renown and capability are the natural, not suspicious, accompaniment of real virtue.
If recognition or capability comes to you, keep truthfulness as the anchor that makes it legitimate rather than letting either one drift from the other.
vidyāvamta kaḷāvamta | lakṣmīvamta lakṣṇavamta |
kuḷavamta suciṣmamta | baḷavamta dayāḷu
Learned, skilled; wealthy, good-marked; high-born, pure-spirited; strong, compassionate.
Learned and skilled, prosperous and well-marked (auspicious in bearing), of good lineage and pure-spirited, strong and compassionate — again pairing worldly and inner qualities, with compassion explicitly set alongside strength rather than opposed to it.
Where you have strength or standing, pair it deliberately with an act of compassion today so the two develop together rather than the first crowding out the second.
yuktivamta guṇavamta variṣṭha | buddhivamta bahudhāriṣṭa |
dīkṣāvamta sadāsamtuṣṭa | nispṛha vītarāgī
Stratagem-possessing, virtuous, supreme; intelligent, greatly-steadfast; initiated, ever-content; desireless, passion-freed.
Resourceful and supremely virtuous, intelligent and greatly steadfast, formally initiated (dīkṣā) and ever content, desireless and free of passion — this ovī closes the trait-catalogue that began at 2.8.003, moving from social virtue back to the settled, desireless interior.
End your own daily review by checking contentment, not achievement — steadfastness and ever-contentment are named here as the mature endpoint of all the other traits.
aso aise uttama guṇa | hem sadvidyacem lakṣaṇa |
abhyāsāyā nirūpaṇa | alpamātra bolilem
Enough — such are the excellent qualities; this is the sign (lakṣaṇa) of sad-vidyā. For the sake of practice (abhyāsa), exposition was briefly given.
Rāmdās signals closure of the long catalogue (2.8.003–2.8.029): 'enough — such are the excellent qualities; this is the mark of sad-vidyā.' He adds that what he has given is only a brief exposition (alpamātra) meant for practice (abhyāsa), not an exhaustive treatise.
Do not be discouraged by the length of the list just given; treat it as a set of practice cues to return to gradually, not a standard you must meet all at once.
rūpalāvaṇya abhyāsitām na ye | sahajaguṇāsa na cale upāye |
kāmhīm tarī dharāvī soye | agāmtuka guṇācī
Beauty and charm cannot be cultivated; there is no method for innate qualities; yet one should hold fast to some means of the acquirable qualities (āgantuka guṇa).
A crucial qualification follows the catalogue: physical beauty and charm cannot be cultivated by effort, and there is no method for innate, given qualities (sahaja-guṇa) — but one should still hold fast to whatever means exist for the acquirable qualities (āgantuka-guṇa), the ones effort can actually change.
Stop trying to change what was never within your control — looks, innate temperament — and put your effort exclusively into the qualities from this list that can actually be trained.
aisī sadvidyā baravī | sarvatrāmpāsī asāvī |
parī viraktapuruṣem abhyāsavī | agatyarūpa
Such sad-vidyā is excellent; let it be in all; but the dispassionate one (virakta puruṣa) should cultivate it imperatively.
The samāsa's closing verse: such sad-vidyā is excellent and should ideally be present in everyone, but Rāmdās singles out the dispassionate seeker (virakta puruṣa) — the topic of the next samāsa — as the one for whom cultivating it is not optional but imperative (agatya-rūpa).
If you are seriously committed to spiritual practice rather than casually interested, treat this whole catalogue of qualities as a requirement for you specifically, not just a nice ideal for others.
