Birth is the unfavorable time; birth is the bad hour; birth is extremely impure — a fall toward hell (naraka-patana).
pāhātām śarīrācem mūḷa | yā aisem nāhīm amamgaḷa | rajasvalecā jo viṭāḷa | tyāmadhyem janma yāsī
Considering the body's origin — nothing is as inauspicious. [The body's] beginning is in the impurity of menstrual blood.
atyamta doṣa jyā viṭāḷā | tyā viṭāḷācāci putaḷā | tethem nirmaḷapaṇācā sohaḷā | kevī ghaḍe
The impurity that is extremely flawed — an image of that very impurity [is this body]. Where then is the celebration of purity?
rajasvalecā jo viṭāḷa | tyācā āḷona jālā gāḷa | tyā gaḷācemca kevaḷa | śarīra hem
Menstrual impurity, congealed, became refuse; this body is merely the sediment of that.
varī varī dise vaibhavācem | amtarīm potaḍem narkācem | jaisem jhāmkaṇem carmakumḍācem | ughaḍitāmca naye
Outwardly it appears glorious; inwardly a sack of hell; like the cover of a leather-vessel — not to be opened.
kumḍa dhutām śuddha hotem | yāsa pratyaīm dhuījetem | tarī durgamdhī dehātem | śuddhatā na ye
A vessel by washing becomes pure; this, even by countless washings, the foul smell does not leave.
astīpamjara ubhavilā | sīrānāḍīm gumḍāḷilā | medamāmsem sarasāvilā | sāmdosāamdīm bharūnī
A skeleton is set up; wrapped in veins and nerves; adjusted with fat and flesh; filled in the crevices.
aśuddha śabdem śuddha nāhīm | temhi bharalem ase dehīm | nānā vyādhī duḥkhem temhi | abhyāmtarī vasatī
Impurity cannot be made pure; and all this fills the body; diseases and sorrows also dwell within.
narkācem koṭhāra bharalem | āmtabāherī liḍībiḍilem | mūtrapotaḍem jamalem | durgamdhīcem
A storehouse of hell is filled; smeared inside and out; a sack of urine collects — of stench.
jamta kiḍe āṇī āmtaḍī | nānā durgamdhīcī potaḍī | amupa lavathavitī kātaḍī | kāmṭāḷavāṇī
Worms, insects, and intestines; a sack of various stenches; a skin trembles endlessly — a pitiful form.
sarvāmgāsa sira pramāṇa | tethem baḷasem vāhe ghrāṇa | uṭhe ghāṇī phuṭatām śravaṇa | te durgamdhī neghave
Head is the measure of the whole body; there the nose twitches; the ear breaks with a stench — such a smell cannot be borne.
ḍoḷām nighatī cipaḍem | nākīm dāṭatīm mekaḍem | prātaḥkāḷīm ghāṇī paḍe | mukhīm maḷāsārikhī
Eye-discharge flows from the eyes; snot clogs the nose; by morning dirt collects in the mouth like refuse.
lāḷa thumkā āṇī maḷa | pīta śleṣmā prabaḷa | tayāsa mhaṇatī mukhakamaḷa | camdrāsārikhem
Saliva, spit, and waste; abundant phlegm (śleṣmā) — and they call this the 'mouth-lotus' (mukha-kamala), compared to the moon!
mukha aisem kuścīḷa dise | poṭīm viṣṭhā bharalī ase | pratyakṣāsa pramāṇa nase | bhūmamḍaḷīm
Such a mouth appears unclean; the belly is filled with excrement; no worldly proof is necessary.
poṭīm ghālitām divyānna | kāmhīm viṣṭhā kāmhīm vamana | bhāgīrathīcem ghetām jīvana | tyācī koye laghuśamkā
The finest food placed in the belly becomes in part excrement, in part vomit; water from the Ganges becomes urine.
evam maḷa mūtra āṇī vamana | hemci dehācem jīvana | yeṇemci deha vāḍhe jāṇa | yadarthīm samśaya nāhīm
Thus filth, urine, and vomit — this is the life of the body; by this the body grows — of this there is no doubt.
poṭīm nastām maḷa mūtra voka | marona jātī sakaḷa loka | jālā rāva athavā ramka | poṭīm viṣṭhā cukenā
If the belly does not [pass] filth, urine, vomit — all people die; king or beggar, excrement cannot be escaped.
nirmaḷapaṇem kāḍhūm jātām | tarī deha paḍela tatvatām | evam dehācī vevasthā | aisī ase
If one tries to extract the purity [from the body], the body will fall apart in truth; such is the arrangement of the body.
aisā hā dhaḍa asatām | yethābhūta pāhom jātām | maga te durdaśā sāmgatām | śamkā bādhī
Being well [outside], if one looks for the real truth, the wretchedness to be described staggers one.
aisiye kārāgṛhīm vastī | navamāsa bahu vipattī | navahi dvārem nirodhatī | vāyo kaimcā tethem
In such a prison-house [the womb] the dwelling for nine months — great calamity; the nine gates are blocked — where is air there?
vokā narakāce rasa jhirapatī | te jaṭharāgnīstava tāpatī | teṇem sarvahi ukaḍatī | astimāmsa
Hell-juices ooze vomit; they heat by the belly-fire (jaṭhara-agni); all bones and flesh are cooked thereby.
tvaceviṇa garbha khoḷe | tamva mātesī hotī ḍohaḷe | kaṭavatikṣaṇem sarvāmga poḷe | tayā bāḷakācem
The fetus is encased without skin; the mother has cravings; the infant's whole body burns with bitter/spicy taste.
bāmdhalem carmācem moṭāḷem | tethem viṣṭhecem peṭāḷem | rasaupāya vamkanāḷem | hota ase
Tied [in] a bag of skin; in that sac of filth; nourishment comes through the cord (vanka-nāḷa).
viṣṭhā mūtra vāmtī pīta | nākīm tomḍīm nighatī jamta | teṇem nirbujalem citta | ātiśayemsīm
Excrement, urine, vomit, phlegm; worms emerge from nose and mouth; by this the mind is extremely bewildered (nirbuja).
aisiye kārāgṛhīm prāṇī | paḍilā atyamta dāṭaṇīm | kaḷavaḷona mhaṇe cakrapāṇī | soḍavīm yethūna ātām
In such a prison-house, the living being falls into extreme press; cries out: 'Cakrapāṇi (Viṣṇu), release me from here now!'
devā soḍavisī yethūna | tarī mī svahita karīna | garbhavāsa hā cukavīna | punhām na ye yethem
'God, if you release me from here, I shall do what is good for myself; I shall escape this womb-dwelling; I will not come here again.'
aisī dukhavona pratijñā kelī | tamva janmaveḷa puḍhem ālī | mātā ākramdom lāgalī | prasūtakāḷīm
Thus in sorrow the vow was made; meanwhile the time of birth arrived; the mother began to cry out at the moment of delivery.
nākīm tomḍīm baisalem māmsa | mastakadvārem sāmḍī svāsa | temhi bujalem niśeṣa | janmakāḷīm
Flesh presses nose and mouth; breath is expelled through the head; but that is blocked completely at the time of birth.
mastakadvāra tem bujalem | teṇem citta nirbujalem | prāṇī taḷamaḷūm lāgalem | cahūmkaḍe
The head-opening is blocked; the mind is bewildered; the creature begins to thrash in all directions.
svāsa usvāsa komḍalā | teṇem prāṇī jājāvalā | mārga disenāsā jālā | kāsāvīsa
Breathing in and out is obstructed; the creature is tormented (jājāvalā); no path is visible; in extreme distress.
citta bahu nirbujalem | teṇem āḍabharīm bharalem | loka mhaṇatī āḍavem ālem | khāmḍūna kāḍhā
The mind extremely bewildered; thus [the fetus] gets stuck cross-wise; people say 'it has come crosswise; cut it out.'
maga te khāmḍūna kāḍhitī | hastapāda chedūna ghetī | hātām paḍilem temci kāpitī | mukha nāsika udara
Then they cut and extract; hand and feet are severed; whatever comes to hand is cut — face, nose, belly.
aise ṭavake toḍile | bāḷakem prāṇa soḍile | mātenemhi sāmḍilem | kaḷivara
Thus pieces are cut off; the infant gives up life; the mother too is left as a corpse (kaḷivara).
mṛtya pāvalā āpaṇa | matecā ghetalā prāṇa | duḥkha bhogilem dāruṇa | garbhavāsīm
Death has come; the mother's life too has been taken; terrible sorrow is experienced in the womb-dwelling.
tathāpī sukṛtemkarūnī | mārga sāmpaḍalā yonī | taṟhīm āḍakalā jāunī | kamṭhaskamdīm māgutā
Yet by good fortune (sukṛta) the birth-canal is found; yet even there, at the neck-shoulder joint, [the fetus] is caught back.
taye samkocita pamthīm | baḷemci voḍhūna kāḍhitī | teṇem guṇem prāṇa jātī | bāḷakāce
In that narrow path they pull forcefully; by that, the infant's life is lost.
bāḷakāce jātām prāṇa | amtīm hoye vismaraṇa | teṇem pūrvīla smaraṇa | visarona gelā
At the time of the infant's death, there is forgetting (vismaraṇa); thereby the previous memory is lost.
garbhīm mhaṇe soham soham | bāherī paḍatām mhaṇe koham | aisā kaṣṭī jālā bahu | garbhavāsīm
In the womb he says 'soham, soham' ('I am That'); on emerging, he says 'koham?' ('who am I?'). Such great torment in the womb-dwelling.
duḥkhā varapaḍā hotā jālā | thorā kaṣṭīm bāherī ālā | savemca kaṣṭa visaralā | garbhavāsāce
He reached sorrow's extent; with great hardship came out; immediately forgot the hardship of the womb.
sumnyākāra jālī vṛttī | kāmhīm āṭhavenā cittīm | ajñānem paḍilī bhrāmtī | teṇem sukhaci mānilem
The mind became blank (śunyākāra); nothing is recollected in the heart; by ignorance, delusion fell — and through that, [the world] felt like happiness.
deha vikāra pāvalem | sukhaduḥkhem jhaḷambaḷe | aso aisem gumḍāḷalem | māyājāḷīm
The body underwent changes; tossed between pleasure and pain; thus it became wrapped in the net of māyā.
aisem duḥkha garbhavāsīm | hotem prāṇīmātrāmsīm | mhaṇoniyām bhagavamtāsī | śaraṇa jāvem
Such is the sorrow of the womb-dwelling — for all living beings. Therefore one should take refuge in the Lord (bhagavantāsī śaraṇa jāvẽ).
jo bhagavamtācā bhakta | to janmāpāsūna mukta | jñānabaḷem birakta | sarvakāḷa
He who is a devotee of the Lord is released from birth (janmāpāsūna mukta); dispassionate (virakta) always, by the strength of knowledge (jñāna-bala).
aiśā garbhavāsīm vipattī | niropilyā yethāmatī | sāvadha hoūna śrotīm | puḍhem avadhāna dyāvem
Such are the calamities of the womb-dwelling, related according to capacity. Listeners, be attentive; give attention to what follows.
