पुढें गेला विदेशासी । प्राणी लागला व्यासंगासी ।
आपल्या जिवेसीं सोसी । नाना श्रम
puḍhem gelā videśāsī | prāṇī lāgalā vyāsamgāsī |
āpalyā jivesīm sosī | nānā śrama
He went abroad; attached himself to business; with his own life he bore many sufferings.
ऐसा दुस्तर संसार । करितां कष्टला थोर ।
पुढें दोनी च्यारी संवत्सर । द्रव्य मेळविलें
aisā dustara samsāra | karitām kaṣṭalā thora |
puḍhem donī cyārī samvatsara | dravya meḷavilem
Such hard samsāra — doing it, he was greatly exhausted; in two-four years he gathered wealth.
सवेंचि आला देशासी । तों आवर्षण पडिलें देसीं ।
तेणें गुणें मनुष्यांसी । बहुत कष्ट जाले
savemci ālā deśāsī | tom āvarṣaṇa paḍilem desīm |
teṇem guṇem manuṣyāmsī | bahuta kaṣṭa jāle
Then he returned to his country; a drought had fallen in the country; by that, people had much distress.
येकांच्या बैसल्या अमृतकळा । येकांस चंद्री लागली डोळां ।
येकें कांपती चळचळा । दैन्यवाणीं
yekāmcyā baisalyā amṛtakaḷā | yekāmsa camdrī lāgalī ḍoḷām |
yekem kāmpatī caḷacaḷā | dainyavāṇīm
Some had the life-drop sinking; some had sunken-in eyes; some trembled shivering — pitiable.
येकें दीनरूप बैसलीं । येकें सुजलीं येकें मेलीं ।
ऐसीं कन्यापुत्रें देखिलीं । अकस्मात डोळां
yekem dīnarūpa baisalīm | yekem sujalīm yekem melīm |
aisīm kanyāputrem dekhilīm | akasmāta ḍoḷām
Some sat piteously; some swollen, some dead; such sons and daughters he saw — suddenly — with his eyes.
तेणें बहुत दुःखी जाला । देखोनिया उभड आला ।
प्राणी आक्रंदों लागला । दैन्यवाणा
teṇem bahuta duḥkhī jālā | dekhoniyā ubhaḍa ālā |
prāṇī ākramdom lāgalā | dainyavāṇā
Extremely sorrowful he became; seeing, grief surged; he began to wail pitiably.
तंव तीं अवघीं सावध जालीं । म्हणती बाबा बाबा जेऊं घाली ।
अन्नालागीं मिडकलीं । झडा घालिती
tamva tīm avaghīm sāvadha jālīm | mhaṇatī bābā bābā jeūm ghālī |
annālāgīm miḍakalīm | jhaḍā ghālitī
Then they came to awareness; say 'father, father — feed us'; for food they crowded, threw themselves on him.
गांठोडें सोडून पाहाती । हातां पडिलें तेंचि खाती ।
कांहीं तोंडीं कांहीं हातीं । प्राण जाती निघोनी
gāmṭhoḍem soḍūna pāhātī | hātām paḍilem temci khātī |
kāmhīm tomḍīm kāmhīm hātīm | prāṇa jātī nighonī
They opened the bundle and look; whatever came to hand they eat; some in mouth, some in hand — life was leaving.
तांतडी तांतडी जेऊं घाली । तों तें जेवितां जेवितां कांहीं मेलीं ।
कांहीं होतीं धादावलीं । तेंहि मेलीं अजीर्णें
tāmtaḍī tāmtaḍī jeūm ghālī | tom tem jevitām jevitām kāmhīm melīm |
kāmhīm hotīm dhādāvalīm | temhi melīm ajīrṇem
Hurriedly he feeds; some die while eating; some who were full also died — indigestion.
ऐसीं बहुतेकें मेलीं । येक दोनीं मुलें उरलीं ।
तेंहि दैन्यवाणीं जालीं । आपलें मातेवांचुनी
aisīm bahutekem melīm | yeka donīm mulem uralīm |
temhi dainyavāṇīm jālīm | āpalem mātevāmcunī
Many thus died; one-two children remained; they too pitiable, without their mother.
ऐसे आवर्षण आलें । तेणें घरचि बुडालें ।
पुढें देसीं सुभिक्ष जालें । आतिशयेंसी
aise āvarṣaṇa ālem | teṇem gharaci buḍālem |
puḍhem desīm subhikṣa jālem | ātiśayemsī
Such drought came; by it the house was ruined; later good harvest came to the country — extremely.
लेकुरां नाहीं वाढवितें । अन्न करावें लागे आपुलेन हातें ।
बहु त्रास घेतला चित्तें । स्वयंपाकाचा
lekurām nāhīm vāḍhavitem | anna karāvem lāge āpulena hātem |
bahu trāsa ghetalā cittem | svayampākācā
No one to raise the children; had to cook food with own hands; the mind was much troubled — by cooking-duty.
लोकीं भरीस घातलें । पुन्हां मागुतें लग्न केलें ।
द्रव्य होतें तें वेचलें । लग्नाकारणें
lokīm bharīsa ghātalem | punhām māgutem lagna kelem |
dravya hotem tem vecalem | lagnākāraṇem
People pressured him; again he married; the wealth he had was spent — on the wedding.
पुन्हां विदेशासी गेला । द्रव्य मेळऊन आला ।
तव घरीं कळहो लागला । सावत्र पुत्रांसी
punhām videśāsī gelā | dravya meḷaūna ālā |
tava gharīm kaḷaho lāgalā | sāvatra putrāmsī
Again he went abroad; gathered wealth and came; then at home, quarrel had begun — with step-sons.
स्त्री जाली न्हातीधुती । पुत्र देखों न सकती ।
भ्रताराची गेली शक्ती । वृद्ध जाला
strī jālī nhātīdhutī | putra dekhom na sakatī |
bhratārācī gelī śaktī | vṛddha jālā
Wife grew into menstrual-age; sons cannot see [her favorably]; husband's strength had gone — he was old.
सदा भांडण पुत्रांचें । कोणी नायकती कोणाचें ।
वनिता अति प्रीतीचें । प्रीतिपात्र
sadā bhāmḍaṇa putrāmcem | koṇī nāyakatī koṇācem |
vanitā ati prītīcem | prītipātra
Always sons' quarrels; no one listens to anyone; wife is extremely beloved — the prīti-pātra.
किंत बैसला मनां । येके ठाई पडेना ।
म्हणोनियां पांचा जणा । मेळविलें
kimta baisalā manām | yeke ṭhāī paḍenā |
mhaṇoniyām pāmcā jaṇā | meḷavilem
Dispute settled in mind; no agreement in one place; therefore five people [mediators] were gathered.
पांच जण वांटे करिती । तों ते पुत्र नायेकती ।
निवाडा नव्हेचि अंतीं- । भांडण लागलें
pāmca jaṇa vāmṭe karitī | tom te putra nāyekatī |
nivāḍā navheci amtīm- | bhāmḍaṇa lāgalem
The five do division; but the sons do not listen; no settlement at the end — quarrel broke out.
बापलेकां भांडण जालें । लेंकीं बापास मारिलें ।
तंव ते मातेनें घेतलें । शंखतीर्थ
bāpalekām bhāmḍaṇa jālem | lemkīm bāpāsa mārilem |
tamva te mātenem ghetalem | śamkhatīrtha
Father-son quarrel occurred; sons struck the father; the mother took the funeral-water.
ऐकोनि मेळले लोक । उभे पाहाती कौतुक ।
म्हणती बापास लेक । कामा आले
aikoni meḷale loka | ubhe pāhātī kautuka |
mhaṇatī bāpāsa leka | kāmā āle
Hearing, people gathered; stand watching the spectacle; say 'the sons have become useful to the father [in this way].'
ज्या कारणें केले नवस । ज्या कारणें केले सायास ।
ते पुत्र पितीयास । मारिती पहा
jyā kāraṇem kele navasa | jyā kāraṇem kele sāyāsa |
te putra pitīyāsa | māritī pahā
For whose sake the vows were made; for whose sake the labor was done; those sons strike the father — look!
ऐसी आली पापकळी । आश्चिर्य मानिलें सकळीं ।
उभे तोडिती कळी । नगरलोक
aisī ālī pāpakaḷī | āścirya mānilem sakaḷīm |
ubhe toḍitī kaḷī | nagaraloka
Such an age of sin arose; all were amazed; townspeople standing, cut the quarrel.
पुढें बैसोन पांच जण । वांटे केले तत्समान ।
बापलेंकांचें भांडण । तोडिलें तेहीं
puḍhem baisona pāmca jaṇa | vāmṭe kele tatsamāna |
bāpalemkāmcem bhāmḍaṇa | toḍilem tehīm
Then the five sat; division was made equally; the father-son quarrel was resolved by them.
बापास वेगळें घातलें । कोंपट बांधोन दिधलें ।
मन कांतेचें लागलें । स्वार्थबुद्धी
bāpāsa vegaḷem ghātalem | kompaṭa bāmdhona didhalem |
mana kāmtecem lāgalem | svārthabuddhī
The father was placed separately; a hut was tied up for him; the wife's mind was with selfish-interest intellect.
कांता तरुण पुरुष वृद्ध । दोघांस पडिला संमंध ।
खेद सांडून आनंद । मानिला तेहीं
kāmtā taruṇa puruṣa vṛddha | doghāmsa paḍilā sammamdha |
kheda sāmḍūna ānamda | mānilā tehīm
Wife young, husband old; the two are in [ill-matched] connection; setting grief aside, she took joy.
स्त्री सांपडली सुंदर । गुणवंत आणी चतुर ।
म्हणे माझें भाग्य थोर । वृद्धपणीं
strī sāmpaḍalī sumdara | guṇavamta āṇī catura |
mhaṇe mājhem bhāgya thora | vṛddhapaṇīm
He found a beautiful wife — virtuous and clever; says 'my fortune is great in old-age.'
ऐसा आनंद मानिला । दुःख सर्वही विसरला ।
तंव तो गल्बला जाला । परचक्र आलें
aisā ānamda mānilā | duḥkha sarvahī visaralā |
tamva to galbalā jālā | paracakra ālem
Such joy he felt; all sorrow forgotten; then tumult came — an invading force arrived.
अकस्मात धाडी आली । कांता बंदीं धरून नेली ।
वस्तभावही गेली । प्राणीयाची
akasmāta dhāḍī ālī | kāmtā bamdīm dharūna nelī |
vastabhāvahī gelī | prāṇīyācī
Suddenly a raid came; the wife was captured and taken; the creature's goods too were gone.
तेणें दुःख जालें भारीं । दीर्घ स्वरें रुदन करी ।
मनीं आठवे सुंदरी । गुणवंत
teṇem duḥkha jālem bhārīm | dīrgha svarem rudana karī |
manīm āṭhave sumdarī | guṇavamta
Heavy sorrow arose; he wails loudly; in mind the beautiful virtuous one remembered.
तंव तिची वार्ता आली । तुमची कांता भ्रष्टली ।
ऐकोनियां आंग घाली । पृथ्वीवरी
tamva ticī vārtā ālī | tumacī kāmtā bhraṣṭalī |
aikoniyām āmga ghālī | pṛthvīvarī
Then her news came: 'your wife has been defiled'; hearing, he threw his body on the earth.
सव्य अपसव्य लोळे । जळें पाझरती डोळे ।
आठवितां चित्त पोळे । दुःखानळें
savya apasavya loḷe | jaḷem pājharatī ḍoḷe |
āṭhavitām citta poḷe | duḥkhānaḷem
He rolls right and left; water pours from eyes; remembering, heart burns in sorrow-fire.
द्रव्य होतें मेळविलें । तेंही लग्नास वेचलें ।
कांतेसिही धरून नेलें । दुराचारी
dravya hotem meḷavilem | temhī lagnāsa vecalem |
kāmtesihī dharūna nelem | durācārī
Wealth gathered was all spent on the wedding; the wife too was dragged off by the wicked ones.
मजही वृद्धाप्य आलें । लेंकीं वेगळें घातलें ।
अहा देवा वोढवलें । अदृष्ट माझें
majahī vṛddhāpya ālem | lemkīm vegaḷem ghātalem |
ahā devā voḍhavalem | adṛṣṭa mājhem
'Old-age has come to me; sons threw me aside; alas, God, my destiny has turned against me.'
द्रव्य नाहीं कांता नाहीं । ठाव नाहीं शक्ति नाहीं ।
देवा मज कोणीच नाहीं । तुजवेगळें
dravya nāhīm kāmtā nāhīm | ṭhāva nāhīm śakti nāhīm |
devā maja koṇīca nāhīm | tujavegaḷem
No wealth, no wife, no place, no strength; 'God, no one is mine but you.'
पूर्वीं देव नाहीं पुजिला । वैभव देखोन भुलला ।
सेखीं प्राणी प्रस्तावला । वृद्धपणीं
pūrvīm deva nāhīm pujilā | vaibhava dekhona bhulalā |
sekhīm prāṇī prastāvalā | vṛddhapaṇīm
In youth he did not worship God; was captivated by splendour; finally the creature repents in old age.
देह अत्यंत खंगलें । सर्वांग वाळोन गेलें ।
वातपीत उसळलें । कंठ दाटला कफें
deha atyamta khamgalem | sarvāmga vāḷona gelem |
vātapīta usaḷalem | kamṭha dāṭalā kaphem
Body extremely emaciated; all limbs dried up; vāta-pitta surged; throat clogged with phlegm.
वळे जिव्हेची बोबडी । कफें कंठ घडघडी ।
दुर्गंधी सुटली तोंडीं । नाकीं स्लेष्मा वाहे । ३७॥
मान कांपे चळचळां । डोळे गळती भळभळां ।
वृद्धपणीं अवकळा । ठाकून आली
vaḷe jivhecī bobaḍī | kaphem kamṭha ghaḍaghaḍī |
durgamdhī suṭalī tomḍīm | nākīm sleṣmā vāhe | 37 ||
māna kāmpe caḷacaḷām | ḍoḷe gaḷatī bhaḷabhaḷām |
vṛddhapaṇīm avakaḷā | ṭhākūna ālī
Tongue babbles; throat rattles with phlegm; foul smell from mouth; phlegm drips from nose; neck trembles; eyes pour; old-age ruin has come.
दंतपाटी उखळली । तेणें बोचरखिंडी पडिली ।
मुखीं लाळ गळों लागली । दुर्गंधीची
damtapāṭī ukhaḷalī | teṇem bocarakhimḍī paḍilī |
mukhīm lāḷa gaḷom lāgalī | durgamdhīcī
Tooth-ridge gone; gaps have opened; saliva drips from mouth — foul-smelling.
डोळां पाहातां दिसेना । कानीं शब्द ऐकेना ।
दीर्घ स्वरें बोलवेना । दमा दाटे
ḍoḷām pāhātām disenā | kānīm śabda aikenā |
dīrgha svarem bolavenā | damā dāṭe
Cannot see with the eye; cannot hear sound; cannot speak loudly — asthma fills.
शक्ती पायांची राहिली । बैसवेना मुरुकुंडी घाली ।
बृहती वाजों लागली । तोंडाच ऐसी
śaktī pāyāmcī rāhilī | baisavenā murukumḍī ghālī |
bṛhatī vājom lāgalī | tomḍāca aisī
Feet's strength gone; cannot sit, squeezes into a fold; groans begin — like his mouth.
क्षुधा लागतां आवरेना । अन्न समईं मिळेना ।
मिळालें तरी चावेना । दांत गेले
kṣudhā lāgatām āvarenā | anna samaīm miḷenā |
miḷālem tarī cāvenā | dāmta gele
Hunger uncontrollable when it arises; food not available when needed; when it comes, cannot chew — teeth are gone.
पित्तें जिरेना अन्न । भक्षीतांच होये वमन ।
तैशेंचि जाये निघोन । अपानद्वारें
pittem jirenā anna | bhakṣītāmca hoye vamana |
taiśemci jāye nighona | apānadvārem
Food not digested by bile; on eating, vomits; it passes right through — by the apāna-door.
विष्टा मूत्र आणि बळस । भोवता वमनें केला नास ।
दुरून जातां कोंडे स्वास । विश्वजनाचा
viṣṭā mūtra āṇi baḷasa | bhovatā vamanem kelā nāsa |
durūna jātām komḍe svāsa | viśvajanācā
Feces, urine, phlegm; vomit around ruined all; passing by, breath is stopped — of the passerby.
नाना दुःखें नाना व्याधी । वृद्धपणीं चळे बुद्धी ।
तऱ्हीं पुरेना आवधी । आयुष्याची
nānā duḥkhem nānā vyādhī | vṛddhapaṇīm caḷe buddhī |
taṟhīm purenā āvadhī | āyuṣyācī
Many sorrows, many diseases; intellect wavers in old-age; yet the span of life is not complete.
पापण्या भवयाचे केंश । पिकोन झडले निःशेष ।
सर्वांगीं लोंबलें मांस । चिरकुटासारिखें
pāpaṇyā bhavayāce kemśa | pikona jhaḍale niḥśeṣa |
sarvāmgīm lombalem māmsa | cirakuṭāsārikhem
Eyelashes, eyebrow-hairs ripened and fell completely; on all limbs flesh hangs — like rags.
देह सर्व पाअरिखें जालें । सवंगडे निःशेष राहिले ।
सकळ प्राणीमात्र बोले । मरेना कां
deha sarva pāarikhem jālem | savamgaḍe niḥśeṣa rāhile |
sakaḷa prāṇīmātra bole | marenā kām
Body became wholly altered; companions remained completely; every creature says 'why doesn't he die?'
जें जन्मून पोसलीं । तेंचि फिरोन पडिलीं ।
अंतीं विषम वेळ आली । प्राणीयासी
jem janmūna posalīm | temci phirona paḍilīm |
amtīm viṣama veḷa ālī | prāṇīyāsī
Those he birthed and raised now stand against him; at the end, a bitter moment came to the creature.
गेलें तारुण्य गेलें बळ । गेलें संसारीचें सळ ।
वाताहात जालें सकळ । शरीर आणी संपत्ती
gelem tāruṇya gelem baḷa | gelem samsārīcem saḷa |
vātāhāta jālem sakaḷa | śarīra āṇī sampattī
Youth gone, strength gone; the rising of samsāra gone; all dispersed — body and prosperity.
जन्मवरी स्वार्थ केला । तितुकाहि वेर्थ गेला ।
कैसा विषम काळ आला । अंतकाळीं
janmavarī svārtha kelā | titukāhi vertha gelā |
kaisā viṣama kāḷa ālā | amtakāḷīm
From birth to now, self-interest was pursued; all that has gone in vain; how bitter the time at the end!
सुखाकारणें झुरला । सेखीं दुःखें कष्टी जाला ।
पुढें मागुता धोका आला । येमयातनेचा
sukhākāraṇem jhuralā | sekhīm duḥkhem kaṣṭī jālā |
puḍhem māgutā dhokā ālā | yemayātanecā
For happiness he pined; at last he is pained by sorrow; ahead again danger comes — Yama's torment.
जन्म अवघा दुःखमूळ । लागती दुःखाचे इंगळ ।
म्हणोनियां तत्काळ । स्वहित करावें
janma avaghā duḥkhamūḷa | lāgatī duḥkhāce imgaḷa |
mhaṇoniyām tatkāḷa | svahita karāvem
Birth is all root of sorrow; embers of sorrow cling; therefore immediately — do your own good (*sva-hita*).
असो ऐसें वृद्धपण । सकळांस आहे दारुण ।
म्हणोनियां शरण । भगवंतास जावें
aso aisem vṛddhapaṇa | sakaḷāmsa āhe dāruṇa |
mhaṇoniyām śaraṇa | bhagavamtāsa jāvem
Such is old-age — terrible to all; therefore take refuge — go to Bhagavān.
पुढें वृद्धीस तत्वतां । गर्भीं प्रस्तावा होता ।
तोचि आला मागुता । अंतकाळीं
puḍhem vṛddhīsa tatvatām | garbhīm prastāvā hotā |
toci ālā māgutā | amtakāḷīm
Next in growth, in truth — there was repentance in the womb; that same came again — at the death-hour.
म्हणौनि मागुतें जन्मांतर । प्राप्त मातेचें उदर ।
संसार हा अति दुस्तर । तोचि ठाकून आला
mhaṇauni māgutem janmāmtara | prāpta mātecem udara |
samsāra hā ati dustara | toci ṭhākūna ālā
Therefore another birth-entrance is attained — the mother's womb; samsāra is most hard-to-cross — that same befell again.
भगवद्भजनावांचुनी । चुकेना हे जन्मयोनि ।
तापत्रयांची जाचणी । सांगिजेल पुढे
bhagavadbhajanāvāmcunī | cukenā he janmayoni |
tāpatrayāmcī jācaṇī | sāmgijela puḍhe
Without Bhagavad-bhajana, this birth-womb is not escaped; the torment of tāpatraya will be told next.
