māgām jālem nirūpaṇa | ādhyātmikācem lakṣaṇa | ātām ādibhūtika to koṇa | sāmgijela
Earlier the signs of ādhyātmika were told; now who is ādhibhautika shall be expounded.
Having described the ādhyātmika (afflictions rooted in one's own body and mind), Rāmdās turns to ādhibhautika — the second of the three tāpa (sufferings), caused by contact with other created beings and things.
Notice today which pains come from your own body or mind versus which come from someone or something outside you — the distinction changes how you respond.
śloka || sarvabhūtena samyogāt sukham duḥkham ca jāyate | dvitīyatāpasamtāpaḥ satyam caivādhibhautikaḥ || sarva bhūtāmceni samyogem | sukhaduḥkha upajom lāge | tāpa hotām mana bhamge | yā nāmva ādibhūtika
[Śloka] 'From union with all beings, pleasure and pain arise; the second-torment truly is ādhibhautika.' [Marathi:] By union with all beings, pleasure-and-pain arise; when torment comes, the mind breaks — this is called ādhibhautika.
The verse states the principle plainly: whenever one being meets another, pleasure and pain both arise; the torment that follows from that meeting — the 'second suffering' — is exactly what ādhibhautika (arising from bhūta, other created beings/things) names.
Before reacting to a hurt caused by another person or thing, remind yourself: this pain arose from contact, not from you alone — it can be met without adding a second wound of resentment.

tarī yā ādibhūtikācem lakṣaṇa | prāmjaḷa karūm nirūpaṇa | jeṇem anubhavāsa ye pūrṇa | voḷakhī tāpatrayācī
The signs of ādhibhautika will be clearly expounded; by which the recognition of tāpatraya becomes complete experience.
Rāmdās promises a plain, thorough exposition so the listener gains full experiential recognition (anubhava) of tāpatraya, the three-fold suffering — not mere intellectual knowledge of the category.
Don't just accept the idea that suffering has causes — actually notice, this week, which of your daily troubles come from outside contact rather than from your own mind.

Stumbling-stones, thorns breaking into foot; wounds from weapons; splinters, pricks, spikes — called ādhibhautika.
The catalogue begins at the humblest level: stubbed toes, thorns underfoot, wounds from blades, splinters and pricks — the ordinary small injuries of simply having a body that moves through a world of hard and sharp things.
The next time you stub a toe or get a splinter, notice the automatic flash of irritation — that flash, not the injury, is what practice can actually work with.

Angyā (insect), kāca-kuhirī; touch the body suddenly; wasps come and sting — called ādhibhautika.
Sudden bites and stings — biting insects and wasps — extend the list: even without another person's intent, small creatures cause real pain simply by their nature.
Treat an insect sting or bite as a small, impersonal reminder that the body is exposed to the world, not as an occasion for outsized anger.

Flies, gadflies, bee-swarms; ants, oil-ants, mosquitoes, gnats; slugs, leeches attack — called ādhibhautika.
Flies, ants, mosquitoes, and blood-feeding leeches continue the roster of small biting and stinging creatures that harass the body — ordinary, low-grade, constant.
Where a mosquito or ant bite would once trigger a swat of fury, practice registering it and moving on without narrating a grievance.

Fleas, caterpillars, ticks; burrs, big-ants, bedbugs; sand-flies, chiggers, mites — called ādhibhautika.
More biting pests — fleas, ticks, bedbugs, mites — are added, underscoring how much of daily discomfort comes from creatures too small to reason with or blame.
When an itch or irritation from something tiny disrupts your focus, name it plainly and return attention to the task rather than dwelling on the annoyance.

Spiders, scorpions, serpents; tiger, wolf, boar; porcupine, hyena — called ādhibhautika.
The scale escalates to venomous and predatory creatures — spiders, scorpions, serpents, tigers, wolves, boars, hyenas — real dangers from the wild that any embodied being must reckon with.
Respect real physical dangers (traffic, wild animals, unsafe terrain) with sensible caution — fear here is useful information, not a flaw to suppress.

Wild cattle, wild buffalo; wild vultures, bears; wild elephants, rampaging — called ādhibhautika.
Large wild animals — cattle, buffalo, bears, rampaging elephants — are named next, hazards that overwhelm a person by sheer size and force regardless of any wrongdoing on their part.
When you feel powerless before something much bigger than you (a large institution, an emergency), focus first on immediate safety rather than on why it 'shouldn't' happen.

Crocodile drags one away; or he suddenly sinks; or falls in rapids — called ādhibhautika.
Water hazards enter: being dragged off by a crocodile, sinking suddenly, or being swept into rapids — death or injury by water's own indifferent power.
Around rivers or any genuinely dangerous terrain, let caution take priority over bravado; suffering from the world does not ask your permission.

Many venomous boas; many crocodiles, sea-creatures; many forest-animals unfathomable — called ādhibhautika.
The list widens to venomous boas, crocodiles, sea-creatures, and countless forest animals — Rāmdās piles up examples precisely to show the list cannot be closed; nature's dangers are 'unfathomable.'
Accept that you cannot foresee or defend against every possible hazard — build reasonable safeguards, then let go of trying to control the uncontrollable rest.

Horse, bull, donkey; dog, boar, jackal, cat; many such fierce creatures — called ādhibhautika.
Even familiar and domestic animals — horse, bull, donkey, dog, jackal, cat — are included among the 'fierce,' reminding the listener that danger is not confined to the exotic or wild; it lives close to home too.
Don't assume familiarity equals safety — stay alert around animals, or people, you think you know well, since harm can come from the near and ordinary as easily as the strange and far.

Harsh, fearsome, many-kinds of sorrow-giving; terrible pains, many — called ādhibhautika.
Rāmdās pauses to summarize: these are harsh, fearsome, many-formed, sorrow-giving — all still ādhibhautika, suffering that comes from contact with other created things.
When several small harms pile up in one day, step back and name the pattern rather than treating each one as a personal verdict on your life.

Walls and ceilings fall; cliffs and earth-beams collapse; trees crash on the body — called ādhibhautika.
Structural collapse joins the list: falling walls and ceilings, collapsing cliffs and earthworks, trees crashing down — the built and natural environment itself can turn dangerous without warning.
Take basic structural precautions seriously — check what's overhead before you stand or sit beneath it — rather than assuming solid things are always safe.

Someone's curse clings; someone's sorcery performed; mid-air they become mad — called ādhibhautika.
The catalogue turns to malice inflicted by other people: a curse that 'clings,' sorcery performed against someone, sudden madness — suffering caused deliberately by another's ill will.
If you suspect someone wishes you ill, respond with grounded practical caution and inner steadiness rather than matching their ill will with your own.
कोणी येकें चाळविलें । कोणी येकें भ्रष्टविले । कोणी येकें धरून नेलें । या नांव आदिभूतिक

Someone provoked them; someone defiled them; someone forcibly took them — called ādhibhautika.
Continuing the theme of harm from others' intent: being provoked into wrongdoing, being defiled, being seized and carried off by force — violations of a person's will and body by another.
If someone tries to provoke or manipulate you into acting against your values, treat the provocation itself as the event to examine, and choose your response deliberately.

Someone gave poison; someone attached blame; someone cast a snare — called ādhibhautika.
More deliberate harms: being poisoned, being falsely blamed, being trapped in a snare set by another — the world of human scheming against a person.
When you're falsely blamed for something, resist the urge to retaliate in kind; state the truth plainly and let the matter rest rather than escalating.

Suddenly a drug-leash struck; unknown bibvā (ink-tree poison) provoked; the creature afflicted by smoke — called ādhibhautika.
Further mishaps: a sudden drugging, provoked poison from a tree (bibvā), affliction by smoke — accidents and harms that catch a person unaware, whether by others' hand or by nature's substances.
Be attentive to what you ingest or breathe without full knowledge of its source — ordinary carefulness with food, drink, and air is itself a form of practice.

Foot falls on embers; hand caught under stone; while running, trips and falls — called ādhibhautika.
Simple physical accidents resume: a foot on hot embers, a hand caught under a stone, tripping while running — the everyday mishaps of an embodied life in motion.
Slow down by a fraction when you're rushing — a large share of everyday injury comes from haste, not malice.

Step-wells, wells, ponds; ditches, cliffs, river-banks — suddenly the body falls — called ādhibhautika.
Falling into wells, ponds, ditches, or off cliffs and riverbanks continues the list of sudden bodily accidents that can befall anyone, anywhere, without warning.
Around any edge, height, or open water, build the habit of a quick safety check before you relax — a moment's attention prevents most such accidents.

Falls from a fort; falls from trees; by that sorrow wails — called ādhibhautika.
Falls from a fort's height or from trees are added, each ending in loud lament — Rāmdās keeps returning to the ordinary carelessness that turns height into danger.
When climbing or working at height, treat every instance as deserving full attention — competence is not a substitute for caution.

By cold, lip splits; hands-feet stitch-wounds open; chilblains and ulcers arise — called ādhibhautika.
The weather itself becomes an affliction: cold cracks the lips, reopens old wounds at hand and foot, and produces chilblains and sores — suffering simply from the season.
Protect your body properly against cold, heat, and weather extremes rather than treating discomfort as something to just tough out.

At eating-time, hot juice burns the tongue; teeth rasped and gouged — called ādhibhautika.
Even eating — the most basic daily act — carries its own share of suffering: scalding food burns the tongue, and the teeth themselves get gouged and worn.
Slow down at meals; a burned tongue or bitten cheek from eating too fast is a small, avoidable injury worth noticing.

Dependent in childhood; ill-word blows and torment; without food or cloth, flat — called ādhibhautika.
The list moves into social and economic suffering: the dependency of childhood, being battered with harsh words, going without food or clothing — poverty and powerlessness as ādhibhautika.
If you have any influence over a child or dependent today, notice how your words land — harsh speech is a real injury here, not a minor thing.

Gallows-place beatings; pinches, slaps; unstoppable weeping — called ādhibhautika.
Domestic mistreatment appears specifically: abuse in the marital household, pinches and slaps, weeping that cannot be stopped — the private cruelty that can occur within a family.
If you witness domestic mistreatment, do not dismiss it as 'just family matters' — recognize it as real suffering that deserves real intervention.

For a mistake, ears are pulled; or asafoetida cast into eye; always holding [him] in grip — called ādhibhautika.
Petty domestic punishments continue — ears twisted for a mistake, something acrid put in the eye, being kept under constant control — the small tyrannies some people inflict on those weaker than them.
Examine any 'discipline' you administer to those under your care — does it correct, or does it merely vent your own frustration onto someone weaker?

Many kinds of beatings; evil-ones strike much; the maternal-home is far — called ādhibhautika.
Violence from wicked people and the added grief of being far from one's family home are named together — physical harm compounded by isolation.
When someone is suffering mistreatment far from their support system, offering even small companionship matters more than it might seem.

Ear and nose pierced; forcibly held and chained; for mischief, he is burned — called ādhibhautika.
Punitive mutilation and restraint follow — ears and nose pierced by force, being chained, being burned for some misdeed — punishments disproportionate to any fault.
Guard against escalating punishment past what a mistake actually warrants, whether toward yourself or toward someone in your charge.

Captured in enemy-raid; given to the low castes; died in distress — called ādhibhautika.
The catastrophe of war appears: capture in an enemy raid, being handed over in degradation, dying in distress — the suffering of conquest and displacement.
Hold real sympathy for refugees and the displaced you read about — this ovī names exactly their suffering as worthy of recognition, not abstraction.

Many diseases arose, [like] those spoken as ādhyātmika; doctors and exorcists summoned — called ādhibhautika.
Illness enters the catalogue: many diseases arise — echoing the ādhyātmika afflictions discussed earlier — and doctors and exorcists alike are called in to treat them, showing how thin the line is between bodily and unseen causes of suffering.
When ill, use both sound medical care and inner steadiness — don't let anxiety about the cause of an illness eclipse the practical work of treating it.
नाना वेथेचें निर्शन । व्हावया औषध दारुण । बळात्कारें देती जाण । या नांव आदिभूतिक

Destruction of many ailments; harsh medicine for cure; forcibly given — called ādhibhautika.
The cure can itself become suffering: harsh medicines forced upon the sick person to destroy an ailment — treatment that is itself endured for a greater good.
Accept that a necessary remedy — medical, financial, or personal — may hurt going down; don't confuse the discomfort of treatment with the disease itself.

Many herb-juices; tonics, bitter, harsh; on drinking, he gasps — called ādhibhautika.
Specific bitter and harsh herbal remedies are named, so unpleasant that the patient gasps on drinking them — another instance of the cure's own difficulty.
When facing an unpleasant but necessary step — a hard conversation, a bitter medicine, a painful fix — take it in one deliberate dose rather than dragging it out.

Purges and emetics administered; strict regimen prescribed; missing anupāna brings disaster — called ādhibhautika.
Purges, emetics, and severe dietary restriction continue the medical theme — and Rāmdās notes that even missing the prescribed accompaniment (anupāna) at the wrong moment can bring disaster, showing how exacting such treatment is.
If you're following a demanding regimen, medical or otherwise, follow its details precisely rather than improvising — precision matters as much as intent.

Blood-letting by lancet; branding-torment; by that pain the creature suffers — called ādhibhautika.
More invasive treatments follow: bloodletting with a lancet, branding as therapy — physically severe medical practices of the era, still classed as suffering caused by contact with the outside world, here the healer's own hand.
Recognize that even help freely accepted can carry real physical or emotional cost — consent to necessary pain does not make it painless.

Bibvā-poultices applied; many crushing pains; veins cut, fire applied — called ādhibhautika.
The catalogue of harsh cures continues: caustic poultices, cut veins, applied fire — Rāmdās is building an overwhelming picture of how much of embodied life is medical suffering alone.
Before undergoing any harsh treatment, ask honestly whether the cure is proportionate to the ailment — not every suffering needs an equally severe remedy.

Many diseases, many medicines; to tell is unbounded-deep; the creature pained by that grief — called ādhibhautika.
Rāmdās steps back to summarize: the diseases and their medicines are too numerous to fully recount, and simply describing them pains the mind — the list itself becomes a source of grief.
Don't try to master every possible illness or remedy in advance out of anxiety; prepare reasonably, then let the rest go unrehearsed.

Summoned exorcist; smoke-beats cause torment; many kinds by clever-ones — called ādhibhautika.
The exorcist (pañcākṣarī) reappears, this time inflicting smoke-based torment as a cure — clever people devising many kinds of affliction in the name of treatment.
Question remedies offered by people who claim special cleverness or hidden knowledge — not every confident cure-giver is trustworthy.

Thieves raiding people; bandits inflict torment; by that sorrow arises — called ādhibhautika.
Human predation returns: thieves raiding people, bandits inflicting torment, the sorrow that follows — crime as a direct source of suffering.
Take sensible security precautions against theft and crime, and if you are ever a victim, remember the loss is not a judgment on your worth.

Scorched by fire-flames; by that sorrow the creature wails; on loss, he laments — called ādhibhautika.
Direct injury by fire is introduced — scorching flames, the wail of pain, lament at loss — the first of several ovīs devoted entirely to fire as a source of suffering.
Keep basic fire safety habits — checking flames, wiring, cooking areas — as an ordinary act of care, not an afterthought.

Many beautiful mansions; many jewel-treasuries; divine garments, enchanting — are burnt to ash.
Fire's destructive reach widens to property: beautiful mansions, jewel-treasuries, fine garments — all reduced to ash, showing how quickly accumulated wealth can vanish.
Hold your possessions, however fine, a little loosely — plan for their loss with insurance or backups rather than assuming permanence.

Many grains, many things; many animals, many interests; many vessels, many belongings; men are reduced to ash.
The devastation escalates from property to people: grain, animals, vessels, belongings, and finally human beings themselves are said to be 'reduced to ash' — fire makes no final distinction between object and person.
When tragedy destroys both belongings and lives together, let your grief and aid go first to the people, not the property.

Fire catches the field; grain-heaps, sugarcane-piles; sugarcane is burnt — suddenly.
A concrete rural scene: fire catches the standing crop, the stored grain-heaps, the sugarcane — sudden and total, the kind of loss that can ruin a household's whole year in moments.
If your livelihood depends on a single vulnerable asset — a crop, a shop, a harvest — build in whatever reserve you reasonably can against sudden total loss.

Such fire catches; or someone set it; loss or burn — called ādhibhautika.
Rāmdās notes that such fire may catch on its own or be deliberately set by someone — either way, the resulting loss or burn is equally ādhibhautika; the cause matters less than the fact of contact with a destructive element.
Don't spend excess energy determining whether a misfortune was 'someone's fault' or 'just bad luck' before you begin to respond to it practically.
ऐसें सांगतां बहुत । होती वन्हीचे आघात । तेणे दुःखें दुःखवे चित्त । या नांव आदिभूतिक

Many fire-attacks to tell; by that sorrow the mind pains — called ādhibhautika.
Rāmdās closes the fire sequence by admitting there are too many such disasters to fully recount, and simply narrating them already pains the mind — again the list itself becomes evidence of the scope of suffering.
If recounting past losses to yourself keeps reopening the wound, consciously choose when and how much you revisit them.

Lost, forgotten, discarded; spoiled, rotted, broken, fell; somehow incurable — called ādhibhautika.
A general catalogue of loss follows: things lost, forgotten, discarded, spoiled, rotted, broken — ordinary attrition, sometimes beyond any remedy.
Practice letting small lost or broken things go quickly — searching or grieving disproportionately over a misplaced object wastes energy better spent elsewhere.

The creature is place-displaced; lost many animals; lost daughters and sons — called ādhibhautika.
Displacement deepens: being driven from one's place, losing livestock, losing sons and daughters — each a distinct grade of loss, moving from possessions toward the most painful, people.
When someone tells you they've lost a child or family member, do not equate it with lesser losses — let your response match the true weight of their grief.

Thieves or enemies suddenly destroy; loot the houses, take the herds — called ādhibhautika.
Organized predation by thieves or rivals is described: sudden destruction, looted houses, stolen herds — deliberate human harm at a household or community scale.
Where you have some responsibility for a community's safety, don't wait for disaster to build shared resilience against predictable threats like theft.

Cutting down grains and bananas; salting the betel-gardens; such destructions done — called ādhibhautika.
Deliberate agricultural sabotage appears — grain and banana crops cut down, betel-gardens ruined with salt — malice aimed specifically at another's livelihood.
Recognize that sabotage of someone's work or livelihood is a real and serious harm, not a petty grievance, whether it happens to you or someone you know.

Swindlers, lift-thieves, burglars; gold-path false-coiners; con-artists cast their traps.
Human cunning turns to deceit: swindlers, burglars, counterfeiters, con-artists setting their traps — fraud as its own category of suffering caused by others.
Apply healthy skepticism to unusually attractive offers or unfamiliar dealings — reasonable caution against deceit is simple prudence, not distrust of the world.

Belt-thieves take the money; many ornaments extract; many things mice take — called ādhibhautika.
The theft sequence closes with pickpockets stealing money and ornaments, and even mice quietly carrying off small things — loss ranging from the deliberate to the merely opportunistic.
Secure what matters to you against both deliberate theft and simple neglect — a little ordinary care prevents much small loss.

Lightning strikes, frost falls; creature caught in the rain; or drowns in great flood — called ādhibhautika.
Weather disaster resumes: lightning strikes, frost falls, a person is caught in a storm or drowns in a great flood — nature's larger forces acting without regard for any individual.
In extreme weather, prioritize shelter and safety over finishing whatever task you were doing — the task can wait; the body cannot always recover.

Whirlpools, bends, currents; rapids, unbounded waves; scorpions, snails, boas — carried away.
Water's danger is detailed further: whirlpools, currents, rapids, and unbounded waves, sweeping away even scorpions, snails, and boas along with anything else caught in them — nothing is exempt from the river's indifference.
Around strong water — rivers in flood, rough seas — treat the current's power as absolute; no skill fully overcomes it, so avoid it rather than test it.

In them the creature caught; stuck on rock-islet; drowning-drowning survived — called ādhibhautika.
A specific near-drowning is narrated: a person caught in the current, stuck on a rock-islet, surviving only after repeated near-drowning — suffering that ends, this time, in survival rather than death.
After surviving a close call, take real time to recover and process it rather than immediately resuming as if nothing happened.

Samsāra not to one's liking; ugly harsh wife cruel; widowed daughter, foolish son — called ādhibhautika.
Domestic disappointment enters: a household not to one's liking, a harsh-tempered wife, a widowed daughter, a foolish son — the ordinary grief of family life not matching one's hopes.
When family members disappoint your expectations of them, separate your love for them from your wish that they were different — the second causes most of the suffering.

Ghosts, spirits attached; evil wind passed over the body; by wrong-mantra the creature wavers — called ādhibhautika.
Unseen affliction appears: possession by spirits, an 'evil wind' passing over the body, disturbance from a wrongly performed mantra — suffering attributed to forces beyond ordinary sight, still classed here as arising from contact with other beings.
Whatever you believe about unseen causes, treat sudden unexplained distress with the same steady, practical response you'd give a visible ailment — seek reliable help rather than panic.

Brāhmaṇa-spirit in body; causes much torment; holds the menace of Śaneśvara — called ādhibhautika.
A specific form of possession — by the spirit of a deceased Brāhmaṇa — is named as causing great torment and a lingering sense of menace, continuing the theme of affliction from forces beyond ordinary sight.
If fear of the unseen or unexplained is disrupting your peace, address it through steady practice and trusted counsel rather than letting the fear itself compound the suffering.

Many grahas, inauspicious-yoga-days, inauspicious tithi, bad moon-day, ghāta-candra, ghāta-nakṣatra — called ādhibhautika.
Rāmdās names ill-reckoned days, hours, and moments regarded as inauspicious or harmful — the sense, common in his time, that certain times themselves can bring misfortune upon contact.
Notice when you're using 'bad timing' as an excuse to avoid a needed action — sometimes the discomfort is in the task, not the day.

Sneeze, owl-cry, lizard-fall; bad kite, crow, kalāli; anxiety-soot attaches — called ādhibhautika.
A list of traditional ill-omens follows — a sneeze, an owl's cry, a lizard's fall, an inauspicious bird's call — each said to bring on anxious foreboding, another instance of suffering triggered by ordinary events read as portents.
When a small coincidence spooks you into dread, pause and ask whether you're reacting to the event itself or to a story you've attached to it.

The lamp-wick burned to end; danger arose within; tormented by bad dreams — called ādhibhautika.
More portents: a lamp burning to its end, an inward sense of danger, torment from bad dreams — inner unease treated as a sign of coming trouble.
A bad dream or an uneasy feeling deserves a moment's attention, not a night of lost sleep worrying over what it might mean.

Bear roars, dog cries; lizard falls on body; many signs bring worry — called ādhibhautika.
The catalogue of omens continues: a bear's roar, a dog's cry, a lizard falling on the body — many such signs said to provoke worry, extending the earlier theme of superstitious dread.
Distinguish a genuine warning sign, like smoke or a strange noise from your car, from a superstitious one — respond to the former, release the latter.

Going out, ill-omen; many kinds of disruption; by that, mind breaks — called ādhibhautika.
Setting out and meeting a bad omen at the doorway is named as its own disruption — many kinds of unsettling starts that can break a traveler's composure before the journey even begins.
If a bad start to your day — a spill, an argument, a delay — tempts you to declare the whole day ruined, consciously reset rather than letting that one moment govern the next twelve hours.

Creature caught in prison; subjected to torment; pained by many sorrows — called ādhibhautika.
The catalogue turns to captivity and its cruelties: being caught and imprisoned, subjected to torment, worn down by many sorrows — the beginning of a long sequence on punishment and confinement.
If you know someone incarcerated or otherwise confined, remember their suffering as real and specific, not an abstraction to be dismissed.

Creature receives royal punishment; bonds, whip, rod; beating on body and foot-soles — called ādhibhautika.
State punishment appears specifically: bonds, whips, rods, beatings on the body and the soles of the feet — the formal violence of law and rule enacted on a person.
Where you hold any authority to discipline or correct others, keep the severity proportionate — this list exists partly to make disproportionate punishment vivid and unacceptable.

Whips, branches, rods; many kinds in many ways; much beating — called ādhibhautika.
The instruments of corporal punishment are enumerated further — whips, branches, rods, in many combinations — the sheer variety underscoring how inventive cruelty can be.
Notice when your own anger looks for a new way to make a point more forcefully — that impulse deserves examination before it deserves action.

Mace-beating, club-beating; four-corner beating with stakes; fists, slaps, knee-beating — called ādhibhautika.
More forms of beating are listed — mace, club, fists, slaps, knees — continuing the exhaustive catalogue of physical violence a person can suffer at another's hands.
If you carry old anger toward someone who once struck you, work it through with a trusted guide rather than letting it calcify into a permanent wound.

Kicks, smacks, cow-dung beatings; ear-stones, stone-beatings; many kinds of beatings — called ādhibhautika.
Further blows — kicks, stone-throwing, even beatings with cow-dung — continue the theme, each humiliating as much as it is painful.
Recognize that humiliation is a distinct harm from physical pain; when comforting someone who was mistreated, address both.

Hanging, whipping, chaining; fetters, stocks, pillories; guard-restraint all around — called ādhibhautika.
Formal restraint devices are named — hanging, chaining, fetters, stocks, pillories, guard on every side — the machinery of confinement and public punishment.
However secure or trapped a situation feels, look for the smallest available freedom of choice within it — attention and attitude remain yours even under real constraint.

Nostril-torture, lime-torture; salt-torture, raw-onion-torture; molasses-torture — called ādhibhautika.
Rāmdās lists specific historical tortures by substance — nostril, lime, salt, onion, molasses — each a named method of inflicting pain, the specificity itself meant to make the suffering vivid rather than abstract.
When suffering is described to you in specific, uncomfortable detail rather than in general terms, let it land — vague sympathy changes less than concrete understanding does.

Dunked in water; tied before an elephant; driven, harassed, tormented — called ādhibhautika.
More forms of torment: being dunked underwater, tied before an elephant, driven and harassed relentlessly — public and degrading punishments.
Where you see someone being publicly humiliated or bullied, weigh whether staying silent makes you complicit before you decide not to intervene.

Ear-cut, nose-cut; hand-cut, foot-cut; tongue-cut, lip-cut — called ādhibhautika.
Judicial mutilation is listed by body part — ear, nose, hand, foot, tongue, lip — the era's punishments for various offenses, laid out without flinching.
Let this list sharpen your gratitude for an intact body — a plain, physical form of gratitude practice available to almost anyone.

Arrow-hit, skewered; eyes and testicles taken out; needles pushed under nails — called ādhibhautika. Put in a pan; or thrown off a cliff; or blown from a cannon — called ādhibhautika.
Execution and extreme torture methods follow — being skewered, mutilated, having needles driven under the nails, thrown from a cliff, packed into a container, or fired from a cannon — the most severe end of the human cruelty this samāsa surveys.
If graphic descriptions of cruelty disturb you, let that discomfort become resolve to never inflict even a small fraction of such harm on anyone in your own life.

Nails driven into ear; pegs into anus; skin stripped and discarded — called ādhibhautika.
More extreme torments continue: spikes driven into the ear, pegs into the body, skin stripped away — Rāmdās does not soften the catalogue even as it grows harder to read.
Notice your own urge to look away from suffering described this plainly — practice staying present with discomfort rather than reflexively skimming past it.

Flayed and diced; or noosed at neck; squeezed with tongs — called ādhibhautika.
The torture catalogue continues with flaying, strangulation by noose, and being squeezed with tongs — Rāmdās's point throughout is the sheer scope of what a body can be made to suffer at another's hand.
Let the weight of this list temper any casual cruelty in your own speech or actions — words that 'squeeze' another person are a milder version of the same impulse.

Lead poured [in mouth], poison given; or beheaded; or trampled under foot — called ādhibhautika.
Fatal punishments close in: molten lead or poison forced into the mouth, beheading, being trampled underfoot — the ultimate forms of ādhibhautika violence, ending in death.
Hold appropriate reverence for life and death — casually joking about violence loses its humor once you've read a list like this.

Lizards and cats stuffed [into body]; or given over to noose; many tortures given — called ādhibhautika.
Further extreme cruelty is named — venomous or clawed creatures set against the body, being handed over for hanging, many kinds of torture — Rāmdās keeps the list going almost past bearing, which is itself the rhetorical point.
If this catalogue feels excessive to read, that discomfort is intended — let it build real dispassion toward a world where such things occur, rather than numbness.

Destruction by dogs, tigers, ghosts, crocodiles, weapons, fire — called ādhibhautika.
Rāmdās compresses the whole catalogue into six named forms of destruction — by dogs, tigers, ghosts, crocodiles, weapons, and fire — as if summarizing the entire range of ādhibhautika death in a single verse.
Use a moment today to mentally review the range of ways life ends — not morbidly, but to loosen your grip on the illusion of permanent safety.

Veins drawn out; burned with torches; such many disasters — called ādhibhautika.
Two more specific tortures — veins pulled out, burning with torches — are added before Rāmdās begins moving from violence toward loss and grief in the remaining verses.
When you encounter accounts of historical cruelty, resist minimizing them as 'a different time' — recognize the same impulses persist and guard against them in yourself.

Loss of men, of wealth; of splendor, of honor; of animals, of goods — called ādhibhautika.
The register shifts from violence to loss: loss of people, of wealth, of splendor, of honor, of animals, of possessions — a six-part summary of everything that can be taken from a person.
Rank today which of these six losses you fear most — the answer usually reveals what you're most attached to, and attachment is exactly what this samāsa is meant to loosen.

Mother dies in childhood; wife in youth; son in old age — called ādhibhautika.
A specific, poignant progression follows: the mother dying in one's childhood, the wife dying in one's youth, the son dying in one's old age — grief timed to strike at the most vulnerable stage of life.
If you are grieving the loss of a family member, let this ovī affirm that such grief is among the heaviest forms of suffering — it deserves full space, not minimization.

Sorrow, poverty, debt; flight to foreign land, nakedness; calamity, childlessness, bad food — called ādhibhautika.
Economic and social ruin is catalogued: sorrow, poverty, debt, fleeing to a foreign land, destitution, calamity, childlessness, poor food — the many faces of material want.
If you or someone near you is in real financial hardship, treat it as the serious suffering it is, deserving practical help, not moralizing.

Catastrophe, epidemic; defeat in battle; death of loved ones — called ādhibhautika.
Larger-scale disasters follow: catastrophe, epidemic, defeat in war, the death of loved ones — communal and shared sufferings, not only individual ones.
During a shared crisis, an illness outbreak or community disaster, remember that grief shared collectively still needs individual care — don't let the scale of the event erase personal grief.

Hard times, famine; doubt and bad moment; anxieties of distress — called ādhibhautika.
General hardship closes this section: difficult times, famine, doubt, ill-omened moments, the corrosive anxieties of distress — the atmosphere of prolonged trouble rather than a single event.
In a prolonged hard stretch, focus on getting through the present day well rather than trying to solve the entire hardship at once.

Caught in a press; fallen under a wheel; fallen into fires — called ādhibhautika.
A sequence of mechanical and accidental deaths returns: caught in a press, crushed under a wheel, fallen into fire — the ordinary machinery and hazards of daily labor turned lethal.
Around machinery, vehicles, or open flame at work, treat safety procedures as non-negotiable, however routine the task has become.

Pierced by many weapons; eaten by many beasts; caught in many prisons — called ādhibhautika.
Three fatal or near-fatal fates are grouped together — killed by weapons, killed by wild beasts, held in captivity — a final compression of the violent and confining dangers named earlier.
Notice how repetition across this samāsa is deliberate — Rāmdās wants the sheer volume, not any single image, to move you toward dispassion; let the cumulative weight do its work rather than fixating on one item.

nānā kuvāsem nirbuje | nānā apamānem lāje | nānā śokem prāṇī jhije | yā nāmva ādibhūtika
Bewildered by bad news; ashamed by many insults; creature wasted by many griefs — called ādhibhautika.
The catalogue turns fully inward at its close: bewilderment from bad news, shame from insults, a person wasted away by grief — psychological suffering triggered by outside events, closing the loop back toward the mind.
Notice how bad news or an insult first lands as an external event and then becomes an internal wound — catch that transition point and you can limit how deep it cuts.
ऐसें सांगतां अपार । आहेत दुःखाचे डोंगर । श्रोतीं जाणावा विचार । आदिभूतिकाचा
aisem sāmgatām apāra | āheta duḥkhāce ḍomgara | śrotīm jāṇāvā vicāra | ādibhūtikācā
Telling is unending; mountains of sorrow exist; listeners, know the reasoning — of ādhibhautika.
Rāmdās closes the samāsa: to tell it all would be endless, for the mountains of ādhibhautika sorrow are without limit; he asks the listener (śrotā) simply to grasp the underlying reasoning (vicāra) of this category of suffering, not to memorize every item.
Don't try to remember every example in this samāsa — take away the single reasoning instead: suffering from contact with the world is vast and inevitable, so build your peace on something that doesn't depend on the world staying kind.
