śrotīm bhagavadbhajana pusilem | tem navavidhā prakārem bolilem |
tyāmta prathama śravaṇa niropilem | dusarem kīrtana aikā
Listeners asked about Bhagavad-bhajana; it was spoken in nine forms; śravaṇa was told first; listen to kīrtana next.
This samāsa opens the second of the nine forms of bhakti: kīrtana — public devotional singing and exposition of God's glory. Having already covered śravaṇa (listening) in the prior samāsa, Rāmdās now turns to speaking and performing it.
Notice how listening alone isn't enough — actively speaking or sharing what inspires you deepens it. Try voicing what moves you, not just absorbing it silently.
सगुण हरिकथा करावी । भगवत्कीर्ती वाढवावी ।
अक्षंड वैखरी वदवावी । येथायोग्य
saguṇa harikathā karāvī | bhagavatkīrtī vāḍhavāvī |
akṣamḍa vaikharī vadavāvī | yethāyogya
Saguṇa Hari-kathā should be done; the Lord's glory should be increased; unbroken articulate-speech (vaikharī) should be expressed — fittingly.
Kīrtana means telling stories of God's saguṇa (with-form, qualified) aspect, continuously amplifying divine glory through unbroken, articulate speech (vaikharī — the fully expressed level of speech) — done appropriately to context.
When you speak about what you value most, do it clearly and consistently rather than in scattered fragments — let your words actually carry through instead of trailing off.
बहुत करावें पाठांतर । कंठीं धरावें ग्रन्थांतर ।
भगवत्कथा निरंतर । करीत जावी
bahuta karāvem pāṭhāmtara | kamṭhīm dharāvem granthāmtara |
bhagavatkathā niramtara | karīta jāvī
Much memorization should be done; scripture-text held in the throat; continuous Bhagavad-stories should be done.
The kīrtankār (performer) should memorize extensively, keep scriptural text ready at the throat — i.e., readily recitable — and tell God's stories without interruption.
Commit the material that matters to you to memory rather than always relying on notes — real fluency comes from carrying knowledge inside you, ready to speak.
अपुलिया सुखस्वार्था । केलीच करावी हरिकथा ।
हरिकथेवीण सर्वथा । राहोंचि नये
apuliyā sukhasvārthā | kelīca karāvī harikathā |
harikathevīṇa sarvathā | rāhomci naye
For one's own happiness-purpose, Hari-kathā done once should be done again; without Hari-kathā, one should not remain at all.
For one's own inner joy, Hari-kathā should be repeated again and again; one should never go without it entirely — its practice is both the means and its own reward.
Return regularly to the practice that nourishes you rather than treating it as a one-time event; make it a repeated habit, not an occasional indulgence.
नित्य नवा हव्यास धरावा । साक्षेप अत्यंतचि करावा ।

nitya navā havyāsa dharāvā | sākṣepa atyamtaci karāvā |
harikīrtanem bharāvā | brahmagoḷa avaghā
Daily fresh enthusiasm; extreme earnest attention; with Hari-kīrtana, the whole universe should be filled.
Rāmdās calls for renewed enthusiasm every single day, not stale repetition, with extreme earnestness (sākṣepa) — the aspiration is that the whole cosmos (brahmagoḷa) resound with this devotional singing.
Bring fresh energy to your daily practice instead of going through the motions; treat each session as if it matters as much as the first.
मनापासून आवडी । जीवापासून अत्यंत गोडी ।
सदा सर्वदा तांतडी । हरिकीर्तनाची
manāpāsūna āvaḍī | jīvāpāsūna atyamta goḍī |
sadā sarvadā tāmtaḍī | harikīrtanācī
From the mind, liking; from the life, extreme sweetness; always, always, eager — for Hari-kīrtana.
True kīrtana requires heartfelt liking from the mind, deep sweetness felt in one's very being (jīva), and constant, urgent eagerness for it — not dutiful obligation.
Check whether you approach your commitments with genuine eagerness or mere obligation; cultivate real fondness for the practice, not just compliance.

bhagavamtāsa kīrtana priye | kīrtanem samādhāna hoye |
bahuta janāsī upāye | harikīrtanem kalayugīm
Bhagavān loves kīrtana; by kīrtana composure comes; by Hari-kīrtana is the remedy for many in Kali-age.
Rāmdās states why kīrtana matters: God himself delights in it, it brings samādhāna (settled composure) to the practitioner, and in the degraded Kali age it is an accessible remedy for many people's spiritual struggle.
In difficult or distracted times, turn to a shared, communal practice of remembrance — it steadies the mind more reliably than solitary effort alone.
विविध विचित्रें ध्यानें । वर्णावीं आळंकार भूषणें ।
ध्यानमूर्ति अंतःकरणें- । लक्षून, कथा करावी
vividha vicitrem dhyānem | varṇāvīm āḷamkāra bhūṣaṇem |
dhyānamūrti amtaḥkaraṇem- | lakṣūna, kathā karāvī
Many wonderful dhyāna-forms should be described — ornaments, adornments; gazing on the dhyāna-mūrti with the heart — kathā should be done.
The speaker should describe God's various contemplative forms (dhyāna) in vivid, wonderful detail — ornaments, adornments — while inwardly gazing on the meditation-image (dhyānamūrti) with the heart as the story is told.
When you describe or teach something you love, paint it vividly and specifically; let your own inner absorption in the subject show through your words.

yeśa kīrti pratāpa mahimā | āvaḍīm varṇāvā paramātmā |
jeṇem bhagavadbhaktāmcā ātmā | samtuṣṭa hoye
Fame, glory, prowess, greatness; with love should describe Paramātmā; by which the Bhagavad-bhaktas' self is satisfied.
The kīrtankār should lovingly recount the Lord's fame, glory, prowess, and greatness — content that satisfies and delights the hearts of devotees present.
When praising or honoring someone or something you admire, be specific about what makes them great — vague praise satisfies no one, detailed appreciation does.

kathā anvaya lāpaṇikā | nāmaghoṣa karatāḷikā |
prasamgem bolāvyā anekā | dhāta mātā nemasta
Kathā-sequences, stories, name-proclamation with clapping; many occasional sayings, settled-dhāta-mata.
Kīrtana draws on many techniques: narrative sequences, illustrative stories, rhythmic name-chanting with clapping, occasional sayings suited to the moment, and well-established traditional refrains (dhāta-māta).
Vary your methods of expression — mix narrative, rhythm, and spontaneity — rather than relying on a single monotonous style.

tāḷa mṛdāmga harikīrtana | samgīta nṛtya tāna māna |
nānā kathānusamdhāna | tuṭomci nedāvem
Tāla, mṛdanga, Hari-kīrtana; music, dance, tāna, māna; many kathā-connections — should not be broken.
Musical instruments (tāla, mṛdaṅga), song, dance, and melodic ornamentation all serve kīrtana — but the thread of the narrative (kathānusandhāna) must never be broken by these embellishments.
Use skill and craft to enhance your message, but never let technique overshadow or fragment the core point you are making.

karuṇā kīrtanācyā loṭem | kathā karāvī ghaḍaghaḍāṭem |
śrotayāmcīm śravaṇapuṭem | ānamdem bharāvīm
With waves of compassion in kīrtana, kathā should be done with roaring; listeners' ear-pockets should be filled with joy.
The kīrtankār should let waves of compassion swell through the performance, speaking with resonant intensity, so that listeners' ears are filled to overflowing with joy.
Speak from genuine feeling, not just information — let compassion and conviction carry your words so the listener actually feels something.

kampa romāmca sphurāṇem | premāśrusahita gāṇem |
devadvārīm loṭāmgaṇem | namaskāra ghālāve
Trembling, horripilation, throb; singing with tears of love; prostration at the temple-door; salutations should be made.
Genuine devotion shows physically — trembling, gooseflesh, a quickened pulse, tears while singing, and full prostration at the temple threshold as an act of humility.
Don't be embarrassed by visible emotion when something truly moves you; let sincerity show rather than performing composure.

padem dohaḍem śloka prabamda | dhāṭī mudrā aneka chamda |
bīrabhāṭimva vinoda | prasamgem karāve
Verses, couplets, śloka, prabandha; dhāṭī, mudrā, many meters; heroic-chant, jokes — as per occasion.
A skilled kīrtankār draws on a wide repertoire — verse forms, couplets, ślokas, compositions, gestures (mudrā), varied meters, heroic ballads, and even humor — deployed as the occasion calls for.
Build a varied toolkit for communicating your message and choose from it according to the moment and audience, rather than using one register for everything.

nānā vacanem prastāvika | śāstrādhārem bolāvīm
Many rasa-filled, erotic; play of prose and poetry; many appropriate words — should be spoken on śāstra-basis.
Even aesthetic and emotionally rich material (rasa, including romantic themes used symbolically) and the interplay of prose and verse have a place — but every word chosen must be grounded in scriptural authority (śāstra), not arbitrary invention.
Feel free to use color and emotional richness in how you express yourself, but keep it anchored to something true and defensible, not indulgence for its own sake.

Signs of bhakti, jñāna, vairāgya; ethics, justice, svadharma-protection; discipline-path, adhyātma-exposition — should be spoken clearly.
The content of kīrtana should also include clear teaching on the marks of devotion, knowledge, and renunciation; on ethics, justice, and the protection of one's proper duty (svadharma); and on the path of practice and spiritual exposition (adhyātma) — all delivered plainly.
When teaching or advising others, be direct and clear about ethics and practice, not just inspirational — give people something concrete they can apply.

prasamgem harikathā karāvī | saguṇīm saguṇakīrti dharāvī |
nirguṇaprasamgem vāḍhavāvī | adhyātmavidyā
In context, Hari-kathā should be done; in saguṇa, saguṇa-fame held; in nirguṇa context, adhyātma-vidyā expanded.
The speaker must read the audience and occasion: when the setting calls for devotion to God's qualified form (saguṇa), extol that; when it calls for the formless (nirguṇa), expand into the deeper knowledge of adhyātma-vidyā.
Match your message to your audience's readiness — meet people where they are before leading them toward deeper or more abstract understanding.

pūrvapakṣa tyāgūna, siddhāmta- | nirūpaṇa karāvem nemasta |
bahudhā bolaṇem avyāvesta | bolomci naye
Setting aside pūrva-pakṣa, siddhānta-exposition should be done fixedly; loose-tongued inconsistent talk should not be done.
The kīrtankār should set aside the opposing view (pūrvapakṣa) once addressed and firmly establish the settled conclusion (siddhānta); rambling, inconsistent speech has no place here.
When making a case, acknowledge objections, then land firmly on your conclusion — don't leave your audience adrift in unresolved back-and-forth.

मायाब्रह्मीचें विवरण । साकल्य वदावें
karāvem vedapārāyeṇa | sāmgāvem janāsī purāṇa |
māyābrahmīcem vivaraṇa | sākalya vadāvem
Veda-pārāyaṇa should be done; Purāṇa should be told to people; māyā-brahma-investigation — should be fully spoken.
Recitation of the Veda, the telling of Purāṇic stories to the people, and a full explanation of the distinction between māyā (illusion) and Brahman (ultimate reality) all belong within kīrtana's scope.
Ground your teaching in both accessible stories and deeper principles — use narrative to draw people in, then explain the underlying truth fully.

गुरुपरंपरा निर्धारें । चळोंच नेदावी
brāhmaṇya rakṣāvem ādarem | upāsanecīm bhajanadvārem |
guruparamparā nirdhārem | caḷomca nedāvī
Brāhmaṇa-hood should be protected with respect; by bhajana-doors of upāsanā; guru-paramparā should not be shaken.
The kīrtankār should uphold with respect the dignity of learned tradition (brāhmaṇya) and the channels of worship (bhajana), and never let the lineage of teachers (guru-paramparā) be destabilized.
Honor the tradition and teachers that transmitted your knowledge to you; don't undercut the lineage of learning even while building on it.

परम दक्ष विचक्षण । सर्वहि सांभाळी
karāvem vairāgyarakṣaṇa | rakṣāvem jñānācem lakṣaṇa |
parama dakṣa vicakṣaṇa | sarvahi sāmbhāḷī
Vairāgya-protection should be done; signs of jñāna should be protected; supremely alert, discerning one protects all.
One must safeguard the marks of renunciation and knowledge alike; the truly alert and discerning speaker protects the integrity of the whole teaching, not just parts of it.
Stay vigilant that your practice doesn't slip in any one area — discipline, insight, or restraint — by periodically auditing the whole of your conduct.

kīrtana aikatām samdeha paḍe | satya samādhāna tem uḍe |
nītinyāyasādhana moḍe | aisem na bolāvem
What on hearing the kīrtana causes doubt; disturbs true composure; breaks ethics-justice-discipline — such should not be spoken.
Rāmdās sets a hard boundary: anything spoken in kīrtana that sows doubt, disturbs the listener's settled peace, or undermines ethics and discipline must simply not be said — content has moral consequences.
Before you speak publicly or teach, ask whether your words will unsettle people's ethical footing or genuinely steady them — filter out what only stirs confusion.

सगुण रक्षून निर्गुण । बोलत जावें
saguṇakathā yā nāmva kīrtana | advaita mhaṇije nirūpaṇa |
saguṇa rakṣūna nirguṇa | bolata jāvem
Saguṇa-kathā — this is called kīrtana; advaita is called nirūpaṇa; protecting saguṇa, one should speak nirguṇa.
Rāmdās clarifies terminology: stories of the qualified God (saguṇa) constitute kīrtana proper, while exposition of non-dual reality (advaita) is called nirūpaṇa; the skilled speaker moves from honoring saguṇa into nirguṇa without discarding either.
Hold concrete, relatable examples and abstract principles together in your teaching — use the concrete to earn the right to speak of the abstract.

वक्ता पाहिजे साचार । अनुभवाचा
aso vaktrutvācā adhikāra | alpāsa na ghaḍe satyottara |
vaktā pāhije sācāra | anubhavācā
The authority of vaktṛtva — to the small, the true-answer is not given; a vakta should be of true-experience (anubhava).
Not everyone is qualified to speak with authority (vaktṛtva); a person of shallow attainment cannot give a truthful answer. A genuine speaker (vaktā) must speak from lived, verified experience (anubhava), not secondhand information.
Only teach or advise with authority on what you have actually lived and verified yourself — defer to others, or stay quiet, on what you haven't.

sakaḷa rakṣūna jñāna sāmge | jeṇem vedajñā na bhamge |
uttama sanmārga lāge | prāṇīmātrāsī
Protecting all, one who teaches jñāna; by whom Veda-order is not broken; the excellent good-path is achieved — for every creature.
The genuine teacher of knowledge safeguards everything at once — never breaking with the Vedic order — so that every creature, without exception, is set on the excellent path.
When you guide others, aim for an approach that serves everyone involved rather than benefiting one party at the expense of another.

aso hem sakaḷa sāmḍūna | karāvem guṇānuvādakīrtana |
yā nāmva bhagavadbhajana | dusarī bhaktī
Enough — setting all this aside, the guṇānuvāda-kīrtana should be done; this is called Bhagavad-bhajana — the second bhakti.
Rāmdās closes the technical survey: setting the details aside, the essence is guṇānuvāda — repeatedly recounting God's virtues. This constitutes the second of the nine forms of devotion.
Strip away technique and remember the essential aim of your practice — repeated, sincere focus on what is genuinely worthy of praise.

By kīrtana great sins depart; by kīrtana the highest state; by kīrtana Bhagavad-attainment — in this no doubt.
Rāmdās now states kīrtana's fruits directly: it dissolves grave faults, leads to the highest attainable state, and brings one to God — asserted here without qualification or doubt.
Trust that sustained, sincere practice genuinely changes you over time — don't treat its benefits as merely symbolic.

harikīrtanem prāṇīmātra | susiḷa hotī
By kīrtana speech is pure; by kīrtana one becomes worthy vessel; by Hari-kīrtana every creature becomes virtuous.
Kīrtana purifies one's speech, makes a person a worthy vessel (satpātra) for grace, and cultivates virtue in whoever practices it.
Notice how the language you regularly use shapes your character; practice speaking about what is good and true until it becomes habitual.
कीर्तनें अवेग्रता घडे । कीर्तनें निश्चये सांपडे ।

kīrtanem samdeha buḍe | śrotayāmvaktayāmcā
By kīrtana awakening comes; by kīrtana resolution is found; by kīrtana doubts of listeners-and-speakers are drowned.
Kīrtana awakens alertness (avegratā), yields firm resolution, and dissolves the doubts of both those who speak and those who listen — it works on both roles simultaneously.
Recognize that teaching something well also clarifies your own understanding — speaking and listening both deepen conviction, not just one side.
सदा सर्वदा हरिकीर्तन । ब्रह्मसुत करी आपण ।
तेणें नारद तोचि नारायेण । बोलिजेत आहे
sadā sarvadā harikīrtana | brahmasuta karī āpaṇa |
teṇem nārada toci nārāyeṇa | bolijeta āhe
Always Hari-kīrtana does Brahmā-putra [Nārada] himself; by that Nārada is called Nārāyaṇa himself.
Rāmdās cites Nārada, the mind-born son of Brahmā, as the exemplar: through his constant devotion to kīrtana, he became so identified with God that he himself is spoken of as Nārāyaṇa.
Take heart from the example of a dedicated forerunner — sustained practice can transform identity, not just add a skill.
म्हणोनि कीर्तनाचा अगाध महिमा । कीर्तनें संतोषे परमात्मा ।

mhaṇoni kīrtanācā agādha mahimā | kīrtanem samtoṣe paramātmā |
sakaḷa tīrthem āṇī jagadātmā | harikīrtanīm vase
Therefore kīrtana has deep glory; by kīrtana Paramātmā is pleased; all tīrthas and the world-self dwell in Hari-kīrtana.
The samāsa closes by summarizing kīrtana's unfathomable glory: it pleases the Supreme directly, and all sacred pilgrimage sites (tīrthas) along with the world-soul itself are said to dwell within it.
Treat a practice that genuinely centers and pleases you as sufficient in itself — you don't always need to travel elsewhere to find what you seek.
