māgām jālem nirūpaṇa | cauthe bhaktīcem lakṣaṇa | ātām aikā sāvadhāna | pāmcavī bhaktī
The sign of the fourth bhakti has been expounded; now attentively hear the fifth bhakti.
This is a transition verse: the fourth bhakti (pūjā, ritual worship) is complete, and Rāmdās signals a shift to the fifth, arcana — the elaborate worship of images and forms.
Before starting any new discipline, pause and give it your full attention rather than half-focus carried over from the last one.
pāmcavī bhaktī tem ārcana | ārcana mhaṇije devatārcana | śāstrokta pūjāvidhāna | kelem pāhije
The fifth bhakti is arcana — worship of the deity; the śāstra-prescribed ritual (pūjā-vidhāna) should be performed.
Arcana is defined precisely: it is devatārcana, the ritual worship of a deity, carried out according to śāstric (scriptural) prescription rather than improvised at will.
When you take up a practice, learn its proper form first rather than making it up as you go.
nānā āsanem upakarṇem | vastrem āḷamkāra bhūṣaṇem | mānasapūjā mūrtidhyānem | yā nāmva pāmcavī bhaktī
Many āsanas, utensils, garments, ornaments; mānasa-pūjā and mūrti-dhyāna — this is the fifth bhakti.
Rāmdās lists the material means of arcana — seats, vessels, garments, ornaments — alongside two interior forms: mānasa-pūjā (worship performed mentally) and mūrti-dhyāna (meditation on the form). Even here, in the most external of the nine bhaktis, an inward dimension is already present.
Pair any outward ritual or routine with an inward moment of focused attention, not just the physical motions.
devabrāhmaṇāgnīpūjana | sādhusamtātītapūjana | iti mahānubhāva gāitrīpūjana | yā nāmva pāmcavī bhaktī
Worship of devas, brāhmaṇas, the sacred fire; worship of sādhus, saints, visiting-guests (atīta); mahānubhāvas, Gāyatrī — this is the fifth bhakti.
The scope of worship widens beyond the household deity to include devas, brāhmaṇas, the sacred fire, sādhus and saints, honored guests (atīta), and the Gāyatrī — showing that arcana is not confined to a single image but extends to all worthy of reverence.
Extend your respect beyond your closest circle to teachers, elders, and guests who cross your path.
dhātupāṣāṇamṛttikāpūjana | citra lepa satpātrapūjana | āpale gṛhīmcem devatārcana | yā nāmva pāmcavī bhaktī
Worship of metal, stone, clay; painted images, sat-pātras; the household deities — this is the fifth bhakti.
Worship is not limited by the material of the image — metal, stone, clay, painted pictures, or a worthy vessel (sat-pātra) — including the deities kept in one's own home. The form matters less than the devotion offered to it.
Do not wait for an ideal setting to practice; honor what is already present in your own home or daily life.
sīḷā saptāmkita navāmkita | śāligrāma śakalem cakrāmkita | limgem sūryakāmta somakāmta | bāṇa tāmdaḷe narbade
Sacred stones — seven-marked, nine-marked; Śālagrāma-shards, discus-marked; lingas, sūrya-kānta, soma-kānta; bāṇa-lingas, tāṇḍaḷe, Narmadā-stones.
A catalogue of sacred stones and natural objects used in worship — marked stones, śālagrāma fragments, various lingas, sun-crystal, moon-crystal, river-stones from the Narmadā. Rāmdās is demonstrating the sheer breadth of traditional worship-objects.
Notice how many ordinary objects around you can become occasions for reverence and care, not just formally 'special' ones.
bhairava bhagavatī mallārī | mumjyā nṛsimha banaśamkarī | nāga nāṇī nānāparī | pamcāyetnapūjā
Bhairava, Bhagavatī, Mallāri; Muñjyā, Nṛsimha, Banaśankarī; nāgas, coins of many kinds; pañcāyatana-pūjā.
More deities and worship-forms are named — Bhairava, Bhagavatī, Mallāri, Nṛsimha, Banaśankarī, serpent-images, coins — and the pañcāyatana-pūjā, worship of five deities together, a common household practice. The list keeps widening the field of legitimate devotion.
Recognize that different people find the sacred through different forms; do not narrow your respect to only one expression of it.
gaṇeśaśāradāviṭhalamūrtī | ramganāthajagamnāthatāmḍavamūrtī | śrīramgahanumamtagaruḍamūrtī | devatārcanīm pūjāvyā
Gaṇeśa, Śāradā, Viṭṭhala-mūrtis; Ranganātha, Jagannātha, Tāṇḍava-mūrti; Śrīranga, Hanumanta, Garuḍa — should be worshipped in deity-worship.
The list turns to well-known iconic mūrtis — Gaṇeśa, Śāradā, Viṭṭhala, Ranganātha, Jagannātha, Hanumān, Garuḍa — all proper objects of deity-worship. Rāmdās is building toward the point that the forms are countless, so the seeker should not get stuck arguing over which one is 'correct'.
Do not let disputes over which form or method is 'right' distract you from actually practicing.
matchakūrmavaṟhāvamūrtī | nṛsimhavāmanabhārgavamūrtī | rāmakṛṣṇahayagrīvamūrtī | devatārcanīm pūjāvyā
Matsya, Kūrma, Varāha mūrtis; Nṛsimha, Vāmana, Bhārgava; Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Hayagrīva — should be worshipped.
The catalogue moves through the daśāvatāra — Matsya, Kūrma, Varāha, Nṛsimha, Vāmana, Paraśurāma (Bhārgava), Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Hayagrīva — the classical incarnations, all fit subjects of arcana.
See the different stages or aspects of your own growth as parts of one continuous unfolding, not as separate identities.

keśavanārāyaṇamādhavamūrtī | govimdaviṣṇumadasūdanamūrtī | trivikramavāmanaśrīdharamūrtī | ruṣīkeśa padmanābhi
Keśava, Nārāyaṇa, Mādhava; Govinda, Viṣṇu, Madhusūdana; Trivikrama, Vāmana, Śrīdhara; Hṛṣīkeśa, Padmanābha.
A further roll-call of Viṣṇu's many names — Keśava, Nārāyaṇa, Mādhava, Govinda, and so on — emphasizes that the divine bears countless names, each a valid handle for devotion.
If a particular name or word for the sacred does not resonate, try another; the substance behind the name is what matters.

dāmodarasamkarṣaṇavāsudevamūrtī | pradyumnānuradhapuruṣottamamūrtī | adhokṣajanārasimhācyutamūrtī | janārdana āṇī upemdra
Dāmodara, Sankarṣaṇa, Vāsudeva; Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Puruṣottama; Adhokṣaja, Nṛsimha, Acyuta; Janārdana and Upendra.
The name-list continues — Dāmodara, Sankarṣaṇa, Vāsudeva, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Puruṣottama, Janārdana, Upendra — Rāmdās deliberately overwhelms the reader with abundance, so that no single name can be mistaken for an exhaustive definition of God.
Let go of the need to fully define or contain what you revere; some things are meant to exceed your grasp.
hariharāmcyā anamta mūrtī | bhagavamta jagadātmājagadīśamūrtī | śivaśaktīcyā bahudhā mūrtī | devatārcanīm pūjāvyā
Countless forms of Hari-Hara; Bhagavān, Jagadātmā, Jagadīśa; many forms of Śiva-Śakti — should be worshipped in deity-worship.
Having listed many specific names, Rāmdās now generalizes: the forms of Hari (Viṣṇu) and Hara (Śiva) are endless, as are those of Śiva-Śakti; all of them, as Bhagavān, Jagadātmā (soul of the world), Jagadīśa (lord of the world), are fit for worship.
Treat the many paths and traditions you encounter as branches of one root, worthy of the same basic respect.
aśvatthanārāyeṇa sūryanārāyeṇa | lakṣmīnārāyeṇa trimallanārāyeṇa | śrīharīnārāyaṇa ādinārāyaṇa | śeṣaśāī paramātmā
Aśvattha-Nārāyaṇa, Sūrya-Nārāyaṇa; Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa, Trimalla-Nārāyaṇa; Śrīhari-Nārāyaṇa, Ādi-Nārāyaṇa; Śeṣa-śāyī Paramātmā.
More composite names of Nārāyaṇa are given — associated with the sacred fig tree, the sun, and Lakṣmī — closing with Śeṣa-śāyī Paramātmā, the Supreme Self reclining on the cosmic serpent, which caps this survey of divine multiplicity.
Hold your image of the highest reality loosely enough that new names or descriptions can still surprise and deepen it.
aiśyā parameśvarācyā mūrtī | pāhom jātām udamḍa asatī | tyāmcem ārcana karāvem, bhaktī- | pāmcavī aisī
Such forms of Parameśvara — when looked, are innumerable; their arcana should be done — this is the fifth bhakti.
Rāmdās concludes the naming: such forms of Parameśvara (the Supreme Lord), if one goes looking, are innumerable, and each should receive arcana. This closes the survey and restates that this whole catalogue is what the fifth bhakti — arcana — means.
Do not treat this abundance as overwhelming; pick the form that speaks to you and worship it wholeheartedly.
yāhi vegaḷe kuḷadharma | soḍūm naye anukrama | uttama athavā madhyama | karīta jāvem
Besides these, one's family-dharma should not be abandoned in sequence; highest or middle-level — should be continually performed.
Beyond formal deity-worship, one's kula-dharma — inherited family devotional custom — should not be abandoned; whether it is a 'higher' or 'more ordinary' practice, it should be kept up continuously.
Honor the small devotional customs handed down in your own family, even if they seem modest next to grander practices.

jākhamātā māyarāṇī | bāḷā baguḷā mānaviṇī | pūjā māmgiṇī jogiṇī | kuḷadharmem karāvīm
Jākhamātā, Māyarāṇī; Bāḷā, Baguḷā, Mānaviṇī; Māngiṇī, Joginī — worship by family-custom.
Specific folk and regional deities tied to family custom are named — Jākhamātā, Māyarāṇī, Bāḷā, Baguḷā, and others — worship of whom is done as kuladharma, not as universal śāstric prescription.
Respect local, inherited, or folk traditions of reverence even when they differ from the grand or official versions.
nānā tīrthāmkṣatrāmsa jāvem | tethem tyā devācem pūjana karāvem | nānā upacārīm ārcāvem | parameśvarāsī
One should go to many pilgrimages and sacred sites; there worship those deities; worship Parameśvara with many services.
Pilgrimage is added to the picture: one should travel to sacred sites (tīrthas) and holy places (kṣetras), worship the deity found there, and offer Parameśvara many kinds of ritual service.
Occasionally step outside your usual routine and seek out places or communities specifically set apart for practice.
pamcāmṛtem gamdhākṣatem | puṣpem parimaḷadravyem bahutem | dhūpadīpa asamkhyātem | nīrāmjanem karpurācīm
Pañcāmṛta, gandha, akṣata; many flowers, fragrant substances; countless incense and lamps; lamps of ghee and camphor.
The list of ritual offerings begins in earnest — pañcāmṛta (the five-nectar mixture), sandal-paste, unbroken rice (akṣata), abundant flowers and fragrances, countless incense sticks, lamps, and camphor — the sensory richness proper to worship.
Bring more of your senses — smell, sight, touch — into your daily moments of focus, not just thought.
nānā khādya naivedya sumdara | nānā phaḷem tāmbolaprakāra | dakṣaṇā nānā āḷamkāra | divyāmbarem vanamāḷā
Many fine food-offerings; many fruits, tāmbūla-varieties; many dakṣiṇās, ornaments; divine garments, forest-garlands.
Food offerings, fruits, betel preparations (tāmbūla), gifts of money (dakṣiṇā), ornaments, fine cloths, and forest garlands round out the material generosity expected in full worship.
Practice generosity as part of your devotion — give something tangible, not only attention or words.
sibikā chatrem sukhāsanem | māhi meghaḍambrem sūryāpānem | dimḍyā patākā niśāṇem | ṭāḷa ghoḷa mṛdāmga
Palanquins, parasols, sedans; elephant-canopies, sun-shades; dindīs, flags, standards; tāla, ghoḷa, mṛdanga.
Ceremonial paraphernalia continues — palanquins, parasols, elephant-canopies, sun-shades, processional banners and flags, cymbals (tāla) and drums (mṛdanga) — the full pageantry of a temple festival.
Do not be embarrassed by outward celebration; joy expressed openly has its own devotional value.

nānā vādyem nānā utsāva | nānā bhaktasamudāva | gātī haridāsa sadbhāva- | lāgalā bhagavamtīm
Many instruments, many festivals; gatherings of many devotees; Hari-dāsas sing — their sad-bhāva attached to Bhagavān.
Music, festivals, and gatherings of devotees follow, with hari-dāsas — devotional singers — performing with sad-bhāva, sincere feeling, their hearts fixed on Bhagavān. The emphasis shifts from objects to the inner attitude behind the outer display.
When you take part in group celebration or singing, let your attention actually rest on what you are celebrating, not just the performance.

vāpī kūpa sarovarem | nānā devāḷayem sikharem | rājāmgaṇem manoharem | vṛmdāvanem bhuyarīm
Step-wells, wells, lakes; many temples with spires; charming palace-courtyards; Vṛndāvana-groves, underground halls.
The setting for worship widens to include step-wells, ponds, temples with spires, palace-courtyards, and Vṛndāvana-groves — the whole built and natural environment that can house devotion.
Treat the places where you regularly practice — home, workplace, a favorite corner — as worth maintaining with the same care as a shrine.

Monasteries, ritual-platforms, dharma-śālās; halls at temple-doors; many utensils and star-garlands; many cloths and materials.
Supporting institutions are named — monasteries (maṭha), ritual platforms, rest-houses for pilgrims (dharmaśālā), halls at temple gates, along with ritual utensils and cloths — the infrastructure that sustains communal worship.
Support the institutions and shared spaces that make communal practice possible, not only your private devotion.
nānā paḍade mamḍapa cāmdove | nānā ratnaghoṣa lombatī barave | nānā devāḷaīm samarpāve | hasthi ghoḍe śakkaṭem
Many curtains, canopies; many jewels and hanging garlands beautifully; many should be offered — horses, elephants, carts.
Decorative and processional items multiply further — curtains, canopies, jeweled hangings — and Rāmdās adds that valuable animals such as horses and elephants and vehicles like carts should also be offered to temples.
Give according to your means; contribute what is genuinely valuable to you, not merely token or leftover offerings.

āḷamkāra āṇi āḷamkārapātrem | dravya āṇī dravyapātrem | annodaka āṇī annodakapātrem | nānā prakārīcīm
Ornaments and ornament-vessels; wealth and wealth-vessels; food-water and food-water-vessels — of many kinds.
A summarizing triad: ornaments and the vessels that hold them, wealth and the containers for wealth, food-and-water and their vessels — Rāmdās notes that even the containers for offerings, in their many varieties, are part of arcana.
Take care of the ordinary tools and containers of your practice — not just the practice itself — since neglecting them undermines it.
vanem upavanem puṣpavāṭikā | tāpasyāmcyā parṇakuṭikā | aisī pūjā jagannāyakā | yethāsāmga samarpāvī
Forests, groves, flower-gardens; hermitages for ascetics; such pūjā should be offered to the Jagan-nāyaka — in full form.
Forests, groves, and flower-gardens, along with the simple leaf-huts of ascetics, are included in what may be offered to the Jagannāyaka, the Lord of the world; such worship, Rāmdās says, should be offered completely, missing nothing.
Care for green spaces and simple shelters as part of a devotional life, not as separate from it.

Parrots, mynas, peacocks; ducks, chakravākas, cakoras; cuckoos, deer, camaras — should be offered at the temple.
Living creatures now enter the list of temple-offerings — parrots, mynas, peacocks, various birds, cuckoos, deer — extending devotion to the animal world kept near sacred places.
Extend basic kindness and care toward animals as an expression of the same reverence you bring to formal practice.
sugamdhamṛgem āṇī mārjarem | gāī mhaisī vṛṣabha vānarem | nānā padārtha āṇī lemkurem | devāḷaīm samarpāvīm
Fragrant deer, cats; cows, buffalo, bulls, monkeys; many objects and children — should be offered at the temple.
The list of creatures continues with deer, cats, cows, buffalo, bulls, and monkeys, along with 'many objects and children' offered at temples — reflecting the historical breadth (and, by modern eyes, the excess) of what medieval temple-complexes gathered to themselves.
Be discerning about what you accumulate in the name of devotion; more possessions do not by themselves deepen practice.
kāyā vācā āṇī manem | cittem vittem jīvem prāṇem | sadbhāvem bhagavamta ārcanem | yā nāmva ārcanabhaktī
Body, speech, and mind; heart, wealth, life, prāṇa; Bhagavad-arcana with sad-bhāva — this is called arcana-bhakti.
After the long catalogue of external things, Rāmdās pivots to the essential point: worship of Bhagavān should be done with body, speech, and mind; with heart, wealth, life, and breath; with sad-bhāva — genuine feeling. This, not the objects listed before, is what truly constitutes arcana-bhakti.
Whatever resources you can bring to a practice — your body, words, thought, and sincerity — commit fully rather than holding part of yourself back.
aisemci sadgurūcem bhajana- | karūna, asāvem ananya | yā nāmva bhagavadbhajana | pāmcavī bhaktī
Similarly one should do Sadguru-bhajana — being ananya (exclusive); this is called Bhagavad-bhajana — the fifth bhakti.
The same principle applies to the Sadguru: one should do bhajana (devoted worship and remembrance) of the guru with ananya devotion — undivided, without turning to any other refuge. This, too, counts as the fifth bhakti.
Give your teacher or mentor the same undivided attention you would want to give the highest truth itself.
aisī pūjā na ghaḍe baravī | tarī mānasapūjā karāvī | mānasapūjā agatya vhāvī | parameśvarāsī
If such elaborate pūjā cannot be done, then mānasa-pūjā should be done; mānasa-pūjā is absolutely necessary — for Parameśvara.
Rāmdās offers the crucial safety-valve of this whole samāsa: if such elaborate outward pūjā cannot actually be arranged, mānasa-pūjā — worship performed entirely in the mind — should be done instead.
When you lack the means or opportunity for a full, formal practice, do not skip devotion — perform it inwardly instead.
manem bhagavamtāsa pūjāvem | kalpūna sarvahi samarpāvem | mānasapūjecem jāṇāvem | lakṣaṇa aisem
With the mind one should worship Bhagavān; imagine and offer everything; know the sign of mānasa-pūjā as this.
Mānasa-pūjā is defined: worship Bhagavān with the mind, imagining and mentally offering everything that would otherwise be materially given. This is its defining characteristic.
Practice visualizing a complete act of generosity or care in your mind when circumstances prevent you from doing it in fact.
jem jem āpaṇāmsa pāhije | tem tem kalpūna vāhije | yeṇem prakārem kīje | mānasapūjā
Whatever one wants for oneself, should be imagined and offered; thus should mānasa-pūjā be done.
The samāsa closes with the simplest possible instruction: whatever one would want for oneself, imagine it and mentally offer it to the divine — this, in full, is how mānasa-pūjā is done.
Before wanting something for yourself, pause and mentally offer it first — a small discipline that reorders desire toward gratitude.
