बहुतां जन्मांचा सेवट । नरदेह सांपडे अवचट ।
येथें वर्तावें चोखट । नितिन्यायें
bahutām janmāmcā sevaṭa | naradeha sāmpaḍe avacaṭa |
yethem vartāvem cokhaṭa | nitinyāyem
After many births, the human body is obtained by chance. / Here one should live uprightly — with justice.
प्रपंच करावा नेमक । पाहावा परमार्थविवेक ।
जेणेंकरितां उभय लोक । संतुष्ट होती
prapamca karāvā nemaka | pāhāvā paramārthaviveka |
jeṇemkaritām ubhaya loka | samtuṣṭa hotī
Prapañca should be done moderately; paramārtha-vivek should be seen. / By which both worlds become pleased.
शत वरुषें वय नेमिलें । त्यांत बाळपण नेणतां गेलें ।
तारुण्य अवघें वेचलें । विषयांकडे
śata varuṣem vaya nemilem | tyāmta bāḷapaṇa neṇatām gelem |
tāruṇya avaghem vecalem | viṣayāmkaḍe
A hundred-year life is allotted; of that, childhood passed unknowing. / Youth entirely spent — on sense-objects.
वृद्धपणीं नाना रोग । भोगणें लागे कर्मभोग ।
आतां भगवंताचा योग । कोणे वेळे
vṛddhapaṇīm nānā roga | bhogaṇem lāge karmabhoga |
ātām bhagavamtācā yoga | koṇe veḷe
In old age, various diseases — karma-enjoyments must be borne. / Now when is the yoga with Bhagavant?
राजिक देविक उदेग चिंता । अन्न वस्त्र देहममता ।
नाना प्रसंगें अवचिता । जन्म गेला
rājika devika udega cimtā | anna vastra dehamamatā |
nānā prasamgem avacitā | janma gelā
Political, religious, agitation, worry; food-clothing; body-attachment; / by various incidents suddenly — life passes.
लोक मरमरों जाती । वडिलें गेलीं हे प्रचिती ।
जाणत जाणत निश्चिती । काये मानिलें
loka maramarom jātī | vaḍilem gelīm he pracitī |
jāṇata jāṇata niścitī | kāye mānilem
People die one after another; the elders have gone — pratīti. / Knowing-knowing, certainly — what has been taken to heart?
अग्न गृहासी लागला । आणि सावकास निजेला ।
तो कैसा म्हणावा भला । आत्महत्यारा
agna gṛhāsī lāgalā | āṇi sāvakāsa nijelā |
to kaisā mhaṇāvā bhalā | ātmahatyārā
Fire caught hold of the house, and [he] lies down leisurely. / Whom shall we call good? — the self-killer.
पुण्यमार्ग अवघा बुडाला । पापसंग्रह उदंड जाला ।
येमयातनेचा झोला । कठीण आहे
puṇyamārga avaghā buḍālā | pāpasamgraha udamḍa jālā |
yemayātanecā jholā | kaṭhīṇa āhe
The puṇya-path is entirely drowned; a vast pāpa-heap accumulated. / The blow of Yama-torment is harsh.
तरी आतां ऐसें न करावें । बहुत विवेकें वर्तावें ॥
इक लोक परत्र साधावें । दोहीकडे
tarī ātām aisem na karāvem | bahuta vivekem vartāvem ||
ika loka paratra sādhāvem | dohīkaḍe
Therefore now do not act thus; by much vivek conduct. / Accomplish both this world and the next.
आळसाचें फळ रोकडें । जांभया देऊन निद्रा पडे ।
सुख म्हणौन आवडे । आळसी लोकां
āḷasācem phaḷa rokaḍem | jāmbhayā deūna nidrā paḍe |
sukha mhaṇauna āvaḍe | āḷasī lokām
The fruit of laziness is cash-in-hand: yawning, falling asleep. / 'Happiness' — so it seems to the lazy people.
साक्शेप करितां कष्टती । परंतु पुढें सुरवाडती ।
खाती जेविती सुखी होती । येत्नेंकरूनी
sākśepa karitām kaṣṭatī | paramtu puḍhem suravāḍatī |
khātī jevitī sukhī hotī | yetnemkarūnī
Those who exert, suffer; but ahead they rest easily. / They eat, enjoy, are happy — by effort.
आळस उदास नागवणा । आळस प्रेत्नबुडवणा ।
आळसें करंटपणाच्या खुणा । प्रगट करिती
āḷasa udāsa nāgavaṇā | āḷasa pretnabuḍavaṇā |
āḷasem karamṭapaṇācyā khuṇā | pragaṭa karitī
Laziness is apathy, stripped-bare; laziness is effort-drowner; / by laziness, the marks of wretchedness — are made manifest.
म्हणौन आळस नसावा । तरीच पाविजे वैभवा ।
अरत्रीं परत्रीं जीवा । समाधान
mhaṇauna āḷasa nasāvā | tarīca pāvije vaibhavā |
aratrīm paratrīm jīvā | samādhāna
Therefore laziness should not be; only then is vaibhava attained — / here-and-hereafter, samādhāna for the jīva.
प्रेत्न करावा तो कोण । हेंचि ऐका निरूपण ।
सावध करून अंतःकरण । निमिष्य येक
pretna karāvā to koṇa | hemci aikā nirūpaṇa |
sāvadha karūna amtaḥkaraṇa | nimiṣya yeka
What is the effort to be made? Hear this nirūpaṇa. / With alert antaḥkaraṇa, for an instant —
प्रातःकाळी उठावें । कांहीं पाठांतर करावे ।
येथानशक्ती आठवावें सर्वोत्तमासी
prātaḥkāḷī uṭhāvem | kāmhīm pāṭhāmtara karāve |
yethānaśaktī āṭhavāvem sarvottamāsī
rise at prātaḥkāla; do some pāṭhāntara (recitation); / as your capacity permits, remember the sarva-uttama (supreme).
मग दिशेकडे जावें । जे कोणासिच नव्हे ठावें ।
शौच्य आच्मन करावें । निर्मळ जळें
maga diśekaḍe jāvem | je koṇāsica navhe ṭhāvem |
śaucya ācmana karāvem | nirmaḷa jaḷem
Then go to the corner that is known to no one; / perform śauca-ācamana — with pure water.
मुखमार्जन प्रातःस्नान । संध्या तर्पण देवतार्चन ।
पुढें वैश्यदेवौपासन । येथासांग
mukhamārjana prātaḥsnāna | samdhyā tarpaṇa devatārcana |
puḍhem vaiśyadevaupāsana | yethāsāmga
Mukha-mārjana, morning-bath, sandhyā, tarpaṇa, deva-arcana; / then vaiśya-deva-upāsana — according to the rite.
कांहीं फळाहार घ्याव । मग संसारधांदा करावा ।
सुशब्दें राजी राखावा । सकळ लोक
kāmhīm phaḷāhāra ghyāva | maga samsāradhāmdā karāvā |
suśabdem rājī rākhāvā | sakaḷa loka
Take some phala-āhāra (fruit-snack); then attend to samsāra-affairs. / With sweet words, please — all the people.
ज्या ज्याचा जो व्यापार । तेथें असावे खबर्दार ।
दुश्चितपणें तरी पोर । वेढा लावी
jyā jyācā jo vyāpāra | tethem asāve khabardāra |
duścitapaṇem tarī pora | veḍhā lāvī
Whatever business of what kind — there be alert. / By distraction, a boy [even] — lays a siege.
चुके ठके विसरे सांडी । आठवण जालियां चर्फडी ।
दुश्चित आळसाची रकडी । प्रचित पाहा
cuke ṭhake visare sāmḍī | āṭhavaṇa jāliyām carphaḍī |
duścita āḷasācī rakaḍī | pracita pāhā
Slips, confusions, forgetfulness, dropping; when recalled, anxiety; / the trouble of distraction — its trace — see it.
याकारणें सावधान । येकाग्र असावें मन ।
तरी मग जेवितां भोजन । गोड वाटे
yākāraṇem sāvadhāna | yekāgra asāvem mana |
tarī maga jevitām bhojana | goḍa vāṭe
For this reason, alert, one-pointed mind be; / then while eating, the meal — tastes sweet.
पुढें भोजन जालियांवरी । कांहीं वाची चर्चा करी ।
येकांतीं जाऊन विवरी । नाना ग्रंथ
puḍhem bhojana jāliyāmvarī | kāmhīm vācī carcā karī |
yekāmtīm jāūna vivarī | nānā gramtha
After meal, read something, discuss; / in solitude, go and expound — various granthas.
तरीच प्राणी शाहाणा होतो । नाहींतरी मूर्खचि राहातो ।
लोक खाती आपण पाहातो । दैन्यवाणा
tarīca prāṇī śāhāṇā hoto | nāhīmtarī mūrkhaci rāhāto |
loka khātī āpaṇa pāhāto | dainyavāṇā
Only then does a creature become wise; otherwise he remains a fool. / People eat; he watches — pitiable.
ऐक सदेवपणाचें लक्शण । रिकाम्या जाऊं नेदी येक क्शण ।
प्रपंचवेवसायाचें ज्ञान । बरें पाहे
aika sadevapaṇācem lakśaṇa | rikāmyā jāūm nedī yeka kśaṇa |
prapamcavevasāyācem jñāna | barem pāhe
Hear the mark of blessedness: never let one moment pass idle; / examine well — the jñāna of prapañca-vevasāya (business).
कांहीं मेळवी मग जेवी । गुंतल्या लोकांस उगवी ।
शरीर कारणीं लावी । कांहीं तरी
kāmhīm meḷavī maga jevī | gumtalyā lokāmsa ugavī |
śarīra kāraṇīm lāvī | kāmhīm tarī
Earn something, then eat; untangle the entangled people; / apply the body to some useful task.
कांहीं धर्मचर्चा पुराण । हरीकथा निरूपण ।
वायां जऊं नेदी क्शण । दोहींकडे
kāmhīm dharmacarcā purāṇa | harīkathā nirūpaṇa |
vāyām jaūm nedī kśaṇa | dohīmkaḍe
Some dharma-discussion, Purāṇa; Hari-kathā, nirūpaṇa; / do not let one moment go in vain — on both sides.
ऐसा जो सर्वसावध । त्यास कैंचा असेल खेद ।
विवेकें तुटला समंध । देहबुद्धीचा
aisā jo sarvasāvadha | tyāsa kaimcā asela kheda |
vivekem tuṭalā samamdha | dehabuddhīcā
Such a one who is all-alert — whence will there be sorrow for him? / By vivek, the connection with deha-buddhi — is cut.
आहे तितुकें देवाचें । ऐसें वर्तणें निश्चयाचें ।
मूळ तुटें उद्वेगाचें । येणें रीतीं
āhe titukem devācem | aisem vartaṇem niścayācem |
mūḷa tuṭem udvegācem | yeṇem rītīm
All that is, belongs to Deva — such is certain conduct. / The root of agitation is cut — in this manner.
प्रपंचीं पाहिजे सुवर्ण । परमार्थीं पंचिकर्ण ।
माहावाक्याचें विवरण । करितां सुटे
prapamcīm pāhije suvarṇa | paramārthīm pamcikarṇa |
māhāvākyācem vivaraṇa | karitām suṭe
In prapañca, gold is needed; in paramārtha, pañcīkaraṇa. / The exposition of the Mahāvākya — on doing, it releases.
कर्म उपासना आणि ज्ञान । येणें राहे समाधान ।
परमार्थाचें जें साधन । तेंचि ऐकत जावें
karma upāsanā āṇi jñāna | yeṇem rāhe samādhāna |
paramārthācem jem sādhana | temci aikata jāvem
Karma, upāsanā, and jñāna — by these, samādhāna remains. / The sādhana of paramārtha — continue to hear that.
