न्यायें निष्ठुर बोलणें । बहुतांस वाटे कंटाळवाणें ।
मळमळ करितां जेवणें । विहित नव्हे
nyāyem niṣṭhura bolaṇem | bahutāmsa vāṭe kamṭāḷavāṇem |
maḷamaḷa karitām jevaṇem | vihita navhe
Speaking hard by justice seems tiresome to many. / Eating with revulsion is not fitting.
बहुतीं विषय निंदिले । आणि तेचि सेवित गेले ।
विषयत्यागें देह चाले । हें तों घडेना
bahutīm viṣaya nimdile | āṇi teci sevita gele |
viṣayatyāgem deha cāle | hem tom ghaḍenā
Many condemned sense-objects, then went on to consume them. / By renouncing sense-objects, the body functions — this does not happen.
बोलणें येक चालणें येक । त्याचें नांव हीन विवेक ।
येणें करितां सकळ लोक । हांसों लागती
bolaṇem yeka cālaṇem yeka | tyācem nāmva hīna viveka |
yeṇem karitām sakaḷa loka | hāmsom lāgatī
Speaking one [thing], walking another — that is called inferior vivek. / By that, all people — begin to laugh.
विषयत्यागेंविण तों कांहीं । परलोक तो प्राप्त नाहीं ।
ऐसें बोलणें ठाईं ठाईं । बरें पाहा
viṣayatyāgemviṇa tom kāmhīm | paraloka to prāpta nāhīm |
aisem bolaṇem ṭhāīm ṭhāīm | barem pāhā
Without renouncing sense-objects, the other-world — is not attained. / Such sayings in places — see well.
प्रपंची खाती जेविती । परमार्थी काये उपवास करिती ।
उभयता सारिखे दिसती । विषयाविषईं
prapamcī khātī jevitī | paramārthī kāye upavāsa karitī |
ubhayatā sārikhe disatī | viṣayāviṣaīm
In prapañca they eat-and-dine; in paramārtha, do they fast? / Both seem alike — in the matter of sense-objects.
देह चालतां विषय त्यागी । ऐसा कोण आहे जगीं ।
याचा निर्वाह मजलागीं । देवें निरोपावा
deha cālatām viṣaya tyāgī | aisā koṇa āhe jagīm |
yācā nirvāha majalāgīm | devem niropāvā
The body working and [yet] renouncing objects — who is such in the world? / The resolution for me — let Deva explain.
विषय अवघा त्यागावा । तरीच परमार्थ करावा ।
ऐसें पाहातां गोवा । दिसतो किं
viṣaya avaghā tyāgāvā | tarīca paramārtha karāvā |
aisem pāhātām govā | disato kim
If every object is to be renounced — then only can paramārtha be done. / On looking thus — a knot appears.
ऐसा श्रोता अनुवादला । वक्ता उत्तर देता जाला ।
सावध होऊन मन घाला । येतद्विषईं
aisā śrotā anuvādalā | vaktā uttara detā jālā |
sāvadha hoūna mana ghālā | yetadviṣaīm
Such the listener recited; the vaktā began to reply. / Be alert, give mind — to this matter.
वैरग्यें करावा त्याग । तरीच परमार्थयोग ।
प्रपंचत्यागें सर्व सांग । परमार्थ घडे
vairagyem karāvā tyāga | tarīca paramārthayoga |
prapamcatyāgem sarva sāmga | paramārtha ghaḍe
By vairāgya, renunciation should be done — only then the paramārtha-yoga. / By prapañca-renunciation, all in full — paramārtha occurs.
मागें ज्ञानी होऊन गेले । तेंहिं बहुत कष्ट केले ।
तरी मग विख्यात जाले । भूमंडळीं
māgem jñānī hoūna gele | temhim bahuta kaṣṭa kele |
tarī maga vikhyāta jāle | bhūmamḍaḷīm
Before, the jñānīs who became — they too did much labour. / Then they became famous — on the earth.
येर मत्सर करितांच गेलीं । अन्न अन्न म्हणतां मेलीं ।
कित्येक भ्रष्टलीं । पोटासाठीं
yera matsara karitāmca gelīm | anna anna mhaṇatām melīm |
kityeka bhraṣṭalīm | poṭāsāṭhīm
The rest went on making jealousy; they died saying 'food, food.' / Many fell — for their bellies.
वैराग्य मुळींहून नाहीं । ज्ञान प्रत्ययाचें नाहीं ।
सुचि आचार तोहि नाहीं । भजन कैंचें
vairāgya muḷīmhūna nāhīm | jñāna pratyayācem nāhīm |
suci ācāra tohi nāhīm | bhajana kaimcem
Vairāgya is not at the root; jñāna of pratyaya is not; / pure conduct is also not — whence bhajana?
ऐसे प्रकारीचे जन । आपणास म्हणती सज्जन ।
पाहों जातां अनुमान । अवघाच दिसे
aise prakārīce jana | āpaṇāsa mhaṇatī sajjana |
pāhom jātām anumāna | avaghāca dise
Such-type people call themselves 'sajjana.' / On looking, inference — is all that appears.
जयास नाहीं अनुताप । हेंचि येक पूर्वपाप ।
क्षणक्ष्णा विक्षेप । पराधीकपणें
jayāsa nāhīm anutāpa | hemci yeka pūrvapāpa |
kṣaṇakṣṇā vikṣepa | parādhīkapaṇem
He who has no anutāpa (repentance) — this alone is pūrva-pāpa. / Moment by moment disturbance — by dependence.
मज नाहीं तुज साजेना । हें तों अवघें ठाउकें आहे जना ।
खात्यास नखातें देखों सकेना । ऐसें आहे
maja nāhīm tuja sājenā | hem tom avaghem ṭhāukem āhe janā |
khātyāsa nakhātem dekhom sakenā | aisem āhe
'I do not have it, it does not fit you' — this is known to all. / The eater cannot see the non-eater — such it is.
भाग्यपुरुष थोर थोर । त्यास निंदिती डीवाळखोर ।
सावास देखतां चोर । चर्फडी जैसा
bhāgyapuruṣa thora thora | tyāsa nimditī ḍīvāḷakhora |
sāvāsa dekhatām cora | carphaḍī jaisā
Fortunate persons, great and great — are condemned by bankrupt folk. / Seeing the well-off, the thief — frets, thus.
वैराग्यपरतें नाहीं भग्य । वैराग्य नाहीं तें अभाग्य ।
वैराग्य नस्तां योग्य । परमार्थ नव्हे
vairāgyaparatem nāhīm bhagya | vairāgya nāhīm tem abhāgya |
vairāgya nastām yogya | paramārtha navhe
There is no fortune beyond vairāgya; no vairāgya is misfortune. / Without vairāgya, proper — paramārtha is not.
प्रत्ययेज्ञानी वीतरागी । विवेकबळें सकळ त्यागी ।
तो जाणीजे माहांयोगी । ईश्वरी पुरुष
pratyayejñānī vītarāgī | vivekabaḷem sakaḷa tyāgī |
to jāṇīje māhāmyogī | īśvarī puruṣa
The pratyaya-jñānī, dispassionate; by vivek-power renounces all — / he is known as a mahāyogī — a godly person.
अष्टमा सिद्धीची उपेक्षा । करून घेतली योगदीक्षा ।
घरोघरीं मागे भिक्षा । माहादेव
aṣṭamā siddhīcī upekṣā | karūna ghetalī yogadīkṣā |
gharogharīm māge bhikṣā | māhādeva
He ignored the eight siddhis; took yoga-initiation; / begs alms door-to-door — mahādeva.
ईश्वराची बराबरी । कैसा करील वेषधारी ।
म्हणोनियां सगट सरी । होत नाहीं
īśvarācī barābarī | kaisā karīla veṣadhārī |
mhaṇoniyām sagaṭa sarī | hota nāhīm
How can a mere costume-wearer — equal Īśvara? / Therefore equality — does not occur.
उदास आणि विवेक । त्यास शोधिती सकळ लोक ।
जैसें लालची मूर्ख रंक । तें दैन्यवाणें
udāsa āṇi viveka | tyāsa śodhitī sakaḷa loka |
jaisem lālacī mūrkha ramka | tem dainyavāṇem
The detached-and-vivekī — all people seek out. / Just as greedy, foolish, wretched — are pitiable.
जे विचारापासून चेवले । जे आचारापासून भ्रष्ठले ।
विवेक करूं विसरले । विषयलोभीं
je vicārāpāsūna cevale | je ācārāpāsūna bhraṣṭhale |
viveka karūm visarale | viṣayalobhīm
Those who have fallen from consideration; those fallen from conduct; / forgotten to do vivek — greedy for sense-objects.
भजन तरी आवडेना । पुरश्चर्ण कदापि घडेना ।
भल्यांस त्यांस पडेना । येतन्निमित्य
bhajana tarī āvaḍenā | puraścarṇa kadāpi ghaḍenā |
bhalyāmsa tyāmsa paḍenā | yetannimitya
Bhajana is not liked; puraścaraṇa is never done. / No fit place for them — occurs — as far as this is concerned.
वैराग्यें करून भ्रष्टेना । ज्ञान भजन सांडिना ।
वित्पन्न आणि वाद घेना । ऐसा थोडा
vairāgyem karūna bhraṣṭenā | jñāna bhajana sāmḍinā |
vitpanna āṇi vāda ghenā | aisā thoḍā
Not fallen by vairāgya; does not abandon jñāna-bhajana; / learned yet does not pick quarrels — such are few.
कष्ट करितां सेत पिके । उंच वस्त तत्काळ विके ।
जाणत्या लोकांच्या कौतुकें । उड्या पडती
kaṣṭa karitām seta pike | umca vasta tatkāḷa vike |
jāṇatyā lokāmcyā kautukem | uḍyā paḍatī
By labor the field ripens; high-quality stuff sells at once. / At the delight of knowing-folk — they rush to it.
येर ते अवघेचि मंदले । दुराशेनें खोटे जाले ।
कानकोंडें ज्ञान केलें । भ्रष्टाकारें
yera te avagheci mamdale | durāśenem khoṭe jāle |
kānakomḍem jñāna kelem | bhraṣṭākārem
The rest all dulled; by dur-āśā, became false. / Self-conscious jñāna is made — by defilement.
सबळ विषय त्यागणें । शुद्ध कार्याकारण घेणें ।
विषयत्यागाचीं लक्षणें । वोळखा ऐसीं
sabaḷa viṣaya tyāgaṇem | śuddha kāryākāraṇa gheṇem |
viṣayatyāgācīm lakṣaṇem | voḷakhā aisīm
Strong sense-objects should be renounced; for pure cause-and-effect one takes them. / The marks of object-renunciation — recognize as such.
सकळ कांहीं कर्ता देव । नाहीं प्रकृतीचा ठाव ।
विवेकाचा अभिप्राव । विवेकी जाणती
sakaḷa kāmhīm kartā deva | nāhīm prakṛtīcā ṭhāva |
vivekācā abhiprāva | vivekī jāṇatī
All that does anything is Deva; prakṛti has no place. / The purport of vivek — the vivekīs know.
शूरत्वविषईं खडतर । त्यास मानिती लाहानथोर ।
कामगार आणि आंगचोर । येक कैसा
śūratvaviṣaīm khaḍatara | tyāsa mānitī lāhānathora |
kāmagāra āṇi āmgacora | yeka kaisā
Rigorous in valor — small and great accept him. / A worker and a shirker — how is that the same?
त्यागात्याग तार्किक जाणे । बोलाऐसें चालों जाणे ।
पिंडब्रह्मांड सकळ जाणे । येथायोग्य
tyāgātyāga tārkika jāṇe | bolāaisem cālom jāṇe |
pimḍabrahmāmḍa sakaḷa jāṇe | yethāyogya
The tārkika knows renunciation-and-non-renunciation; walks as he speaks. / Piṇḍa-brahmāṇḍa, all knows — appropriately.
ऐसा जो सर्वजाणता । उत्तमलक्षणी पुरुता ।
तयाचेनि सार्थकता । सहजचि होये
aisā jo sarvajāṇatā | uttamalakṣaṇī purutā |
tayāceni sārthakatā | sahajaci hoye
Such an all-knowing, excellent-marked puruṣa, / by him, fruition — happens spontaneously.
