आपण येथेष्ट जेवणें । उरलें तें अन्न वाटणें ।
परंतु वाया दवडणें । हा धर्म नव्हे
āpaṇa yetheṣṭa jevaṇem | uralem tem anna vāṭaṇem |
paramtu vāyā davaḍaṇem | hā dharma navhe
Eat enough for oneself; distribute the leftover food. / But to waste it — is not dharma.
तैसें ज्ञानें तृप्त व्हावें। तेंचि ज्ञान जनास सांगावें ।
तरतेन बुडों नेदावें । बुडतयासी
taisem jñānem tṛpta vhāvem | temci jñāna janāsa sāmgāvem |
taratena buḍom nedāvem | buḍatayāsī
Likewise, be sated by jñāna; tell that very jñāna to people. / Let the swimmer not drown — the drowning.
उत्तम गुण स्वयें घ्यावे । ते बहुतांस सांगावे ।
वर्तल्याविण बोलावे । ते शब्द मिथ्या
uttama guṇa svayem ghyāve | te bahutāmsa sāmgāve |
vartalyāviṇa bolāve | te śabda mithyā
Take excellent virtues for oneself; tell them to many. / Speak words without having lived — those words are mithyā.
स्नान संध्या देवार्चन । येकाग्र करावें जपध्यान ।
हरिकथा निरूपण । केलें पाहिजे
snāna samdhyā devārcana | yekāgra karāvem japadhyāna |
harikathā nirūpaṇa | kelem pāhije
Snāna, sandhyā, deva-arcana; do japa-dhyāna one-pointedly; / Hari-kathā, nirūpaṇa — must be done.
शरीर परोपकारीं लावावें । बहुतांच्या कार्यास यावें ।
उणें पडों नेदावें । कोणियेकाचें
śarīra paropakārīm lāvāvem | bahutāmcyā kāryāsa yāvem |
uṇem paḍom nedāvem | koṇiyekācem
Apply the body to benevolence; come to many for their tasks; / do not let someone's need — remain unmet.
आडले जाकसलें जाणावें । यथानशक्ति कामास यावें ।
मृदवचनें बोलत जावें । कोणीयेकासी
āḍale jākasalem jāṇāvem | yathānaśakti kāmāsa yāvem |
mṛdavacanem bolata jāvem | koṇīyekāsī
Know the stuck and entangled; as capable, come to help; / speak with soft words — to anyone.
दुसर्याच्या दुःखें दुःखवावें । परसंतोषें सुखी व्हावें ।
प्राणीमात्रास मेळऊन घ्यावें । बर्या शब्दें
dusaryācyā duḥkhem duḥkhavāvem | parasamtoṣem sukhī vhāvem |
prāṇīmātrāsa meḷaūna ghyāvem | baryā śabdem
Be sorrowful in another's sorrow; be happy in another's joy; / gather every creature — with good words.
बहुतांचे अन्याये क्ष्मावे । बहुतांचे कार्यभाग करावे ।
आपल्यापरीस व्हावे । पारखे जन
bahutāmce anyāye kṣmāve | bahutāmce kāryabhāga karāve |
āpalyāparīsa vhāve | pārakhe jana
Forgive the faults of many; do the tasks of many; / become closer to strangers — than to your own.
दुसर्याचें अंतरजाणावें । तदनुसारचि वर्तावें।
लोकांस परीक्षित जावें । नाना प्रकारें
dusaryācem amtarajāṇāvem | tadanusāraci vartāvem |
lokāmsa parīkṣita jāvem | nānā prakārem
Know another's interior; act accordingly; / examine people — in various ways.
नेमकचि बोलावें । तत्काळचि प्रतिवचन द्यावें ।
कदापी रागास न यावें । क्ष्मारूपें
nemakaci bolāvem | tatkāḷaci prativacana dyāvem |
kadāpī rāgāsa na yāvem | kṣmārūpem
Speak rigorously; give at once the counter-reply; / never come to anger — in kṣamā-form.
आलस्य अवघाच दवडावा । येत्न उदंडचि करावा ।
शब्दमत्सर न करावा । कोणीयेकाचा
ālasya avaghāca davaḍāvā | yetna udamḍaci karāvā |
śabdamatsara na karāvā | koṇīyekācā
Send away all laziness; do much effort; / do not be jealous-in-word — with anyone.
उत्तम पदार्थ दुसर्यास द्यावा । शब्द निवडून बोलावा ।
सावधपणें करीत जावा । संसार आपला
uttama padārtha dusaryāsa dyāvā | śabda nivaḍūna bolāvā |
sāvadhapaṇem karīta jāvā | samsāra āpalā
Give the best object to another; speak words with discernment; / attentively conduct — one's own samsāra.
मरणाचें स्मरण असावें । हरिभक्तीस सादर व्हावें ।
मरोन कीर्तीस उरवावें । येणें प्रकारें
maraṇācem smaraṇa asāvem | haribhaktīsa sādara vhāvem |
marona kīrtīsa uravāvem | yeṇem prakārem
Remember death; be eager for Hari-bhakti; / dying, preserve fame — in this manner.
नेमकपणें वर्तों लागला । तो बहुतांस कळों आला ।
सर्व आर्जवी तयाला । काये उणें
nemakapaṇem vartom lāgalā | to bahutāmsa kaḷom ālā |
sarva ārjavī tayālā | kāye uṇem
When one conducts rigorously, many come to know him. / All supporting him — what lacks?
ऐसा उत्तम गुणी विशेष । तयास म्हणावें पुरुष ।
जयाच्या भजनें जगदीश । तृप्त होये
aisā uttama guṇī viśeṣa | tayāsa mhaṇāvem puruṣa |
jayācyā bhajanem jagadīśa | tṛpta hoye
Such excellent-virtued, special — should be called a puruṣa. / By whose bhajana, jagadīśa — is sated.
उदंड धिःकारून बोलती । तरी चळों नेदावी शांति ।
दुर्जनास मिळोन जाती । धन्य ते साधु
udamḍa dhiḥkārūna bolatī | tarī caḷom nedāvī śāmti |
durjanāsa miḷona jātī | dhanya te sādhu
Many speak with contempt; but let patience not shake. / To unite with wicked — blessed are those sādhus.
उत्तम गुणीं श्रृंघारला । ज्ञानवैराग्यें शोभला ।
तोची येक जाणावा भला । भूमंडळीं
uttama guṇīm śrṛmghāralā | jñānavairāgyem śobhalā |
tocī yeka jāṇāvā bhalā | bhūmamḍaḷīm
Adorned with excellent virtues, shining with jñāna-vairāgya — / he alone is known as good — on earth.
स्वयें आपण कष्टावें । बहुतांचें सोसित जावें ।
झिजोन कीर्तीस उरवावें । नाना प्रकारें
svayem āpaṇa kaṣṭāvem | bahutāmcem sosita jāvem |
jhijona kīrtīsa uravāvem | nānā prakārem
One should labour oneself; bear [the burdens] of many; / wearing down, preserve fame — in various ways.
कीर्ती पाहों जातां सुख नाहीं । सुख पाहातां कीर्ती नाहीं ।
विचारेंविण कोठेंचि नाहीं । सामाधान
kīrtī pāhom jātām sukha nāhīm | sukha pāhātām kīrtī nāhīm |
vicāremviṇa koṭhemci nāhīm | sāmādhāna
Seeking fame, there is no sukha; seeking sukha, there is no fame. / Without vicāra, nowhere is there — samādhāna.
परांतरास न लावावा ढका । कदापि पडों नेदावा चुका ।
स्मासीळ तयाच्या तुका । हानी नाहीं
parāmtarāsa na lāvāvā ḍhakā | kadāpi paḍom nedāvā cukā |
smāsīḷa tayācyā tukā | hānī nāhīm
Do not deliver a blow to another's heart; let a slip never fall. / For one who is patient, to his mark — no loss.
आपलें अथवा परावें । कार्य अवघेंच करावें ।
प्रसंगीं कामास चुकवावें । हें विहित नव्हे
āpalem athavā parāvem | kārya avaghemca karāvem |
prasamgīm kāmāsa cukavāvem | hem vihita navhe
Own or other's — every task should be done. / To miss the work on occasion — is not fitting.
बरें बोलतां सुख वाटतें । हें तों प्रत्यक्ष कळतें ।
आत्मवत परावें तें । मानीत जावें
barem bolatām sukha vāṭatem | hem tom pratyakṣa kaḷatem |
ātmavata parāvem tem | mānīta jāvem
With good speech, happiness is felt; this is directly known. / Treat another — as one's own.
कठिण शब्दें वाईट वाटतें । तें तों प्रत्ययास येतें ।
तरी मग वाईट बोलावें तें । काये निमित्य
kaṭhiṇa śabdem vāīṭa vāṭatem | tem tom pratyayāsa yetem |
tarī maga vāīṭa bolāvem tem | kāye nimitya
Hard words feel bad — this comes to pratyaya. / Then speaking badly — for what purpose?
आपणास चिमोट घेतला । तेणें कासाविस जाला ।
आपणावरून दुसर्याला । राखत जावें
āpaṇāsa cimoṭa ghetalā | teṇem kāsāvisa jālā |
āpaṇāvarūna dusaryālā | rākhata jāvem
If one is pinched oneself, one is distressed by that. / From one's own [experience] — toward another — should keep [restraint].
जे दुसर्यास दुःख करी । ते अपवित्र वैखरी ।
आपणास घात करी । कोणियेके प्रसंगीं
je dusaryāsa duḥkha karī | te apavitra vaikharī |
āpaṇāsa ghāta karī | koṇiyeke prasamgīm
She who pains another is the impure Vaikharī. / Destroys oneself — at some occasion.
पेरिलें ते उगवतें । बोलण्यासारिखें उत्तर येतें ।
तरी मग कर्कश बोलावें तें । काये निमित्य
perilem te ugavatem | bolaṇyāsārikhem uttara yetem |
tarī maga karkaśa bolāvem tem | kāye nimitya
What is sown sprouts; reply comes according to what was spoken. / Then speaking harshly — for what purpose?
आपल्या पुरुषार्थवैभवें । बहुतांस सुखी करावें ।
परंतु कष्टी करावें । हे राक्षेसी क्रिया
āpalyā puruṣārthavaibhavem | bahutāmsa sukhī karāvem |
paramtu kaṣṭī karāvem | he rākṣesī kriyā
By one's puruṣārtha-vaibhava, many should be made happy. / To make suffer — is the rākṣasa-action.
दंभ दर्प अभिमान । क्रोध आणी कठिण वचन ।
हें अज्ञानाचें लक्षण । भगवद्गीतेंत बोलिलें
dambha darpa abhimāna | krodha āṇī kaṭhiṇa vacana |
hem ajñānācem lakṣaṇa | bhagavadgītemta bolilem
Dambha, darpa, abhimāna; krodha, and harsh speech — / these are the marks of ajñāna — spoken in the Bhagavad-gītā.
जो उत्तम गुणें शोभला । तोचि पुरुष माहा भला ।
कित्येक लोक तयाला । शोधीत फिरती
jo uttama guṇem śobhalā | toci puruṣa māhā bhalā |
kityeka loka tayālā | śodhīta phiratī
He who shines with excellent virtues — is the great puruṣa. / Several people seek him out — wandering.
क्रियेविण शब्दज्ञान । तेंचि स्वानाचें वमन ।
भले तेथें अवलोकन । कदापी न करिती
kriyeviṇa śabdajñāna | temci svānācem vamana |
bhale tethem avalokana | kadāpī na karitī
Word-jñāna without kriyā — is a dog's vomit. / The good never cast — their gaze upon it.
मनापासून भक्ति करणें । उत्तम गुण अगत्य धरणें ।
तया माहांपुरुषाकारणें । धुंडीत येती
manāpāsūna bhakti karaṇem | uttama guṇa agatya dharaṇem |
tayā māhāmpuruṣākāraṇem | dhumḍīta yetī
Doing bhakti from mind; holding excellent virtues as essential; / to that mahāpuruṣa — they come searching.
ऐसा जो माहानुभाव। तेणें करावा समुदाव ।
भक्तियोगें देवाधिदेव । आपुला करावा
aisā jo māhānubhāva | teṇem karāvā samudāva |
bhaktiyogem devādhideva | āpulā karāvā
Such a mahānubhāva — should make a samuccaya (community). / By bhakti-yoga, Devādhi-deva — should be made one's own.
आपण आवचितें मरोन जावें । मग भजन कोणें करावें ।
याकारणें भजनास लावावे । बहुत लोक
āpaṇa āvacitem marona jāvem | maga bhajana koṇem karāvem |
yākāraṇem bhajanāsa lāvāve | bahuta loka
If one oneself dies suddenly — then who will do the bhajana? / For this reason, engage many people — in bhajana.
आमची प्रतिज्ञा ऐसी । कांहीं न मागावें शिष्यासी ।
आपणामागें जगदीशासी । भजत जावें
āmacī pratijñā aisī | kāmhīm na māgāvem śiṣyāsī |
āpaṇāmāgem jagadīśāsī | bhajata jāvem
Our vow is this: nothing should be demanded from the śiṣya. / After us, the jagadīśa — should continue to be worshipped.
याकारणें समुदाव । जाला पाहिजे मोहोछाव ।
हातोहातीं देवाधिदेव । वोळेसा करावा
yākāraṇem samudāva | jālā pāhije mohochāva |
hātohātīm devādhideva | voḷesā karāvā
For this reason, the samuccaya — mohotsava should be done. / Hand-to-hand, Devādhi-deva — should be made favourable.
आता समुदायाकारणें । पाहिजेती दोनी लक्षणें ।
श्रोतीं येथें सावधपणें । मन घालावें
ātā samudāyākāraṇem | pāhijetī donī lakṣaṇem |
śrotīm yethem sāvadhapaṇem | mana ghālāvem
Now for the community, two marks are needed; / here listeners, attentively — apply the mind.
जेणें बहुतांस घडे भक्ति । ते हे रोकडी प्रबोधशक्ति ।
बहुतांचें मनोगत हातीं । घेतलें पाहिजे
jeṇem bahutāmsa ghaḍe bhakti | te he rokaḍī prabodhaśakti |
bahutāmcem manogata hātīm | ghetalem pāhije
That by which many get bhakti — is cash-in-hand prabodha-śakti (awakening-power). / The inner-aim of many — should be taken in hand.
मागा बोलिले उत्तम गुण । तयास मानिती प्रमाण ।
प्रबोधशक्तीचें लक्षण । पुढें चाले
māgā bolile uttama guṇa | tayāsa mānitī pramāṇa |
prabodhaśaktīcem lakṣaṇa | puḍhem cāle
Earlier the excellent-virtues were spoken; those are held as pramāṇa. / The mark of prabodha-śakti — goes ahead.
बोलण्यासारिखें चालणें । स्वयें करून बोलणें ।
तयाचीं वचनें प्रमाणें । मानिती जनीं
bolaṇyāsārikhem cālaṇem | svayem karūna bolaṇem |
tayācīm vacanem pramāṇem | mānitī janīm
Walking as one speaks; oneself doing, then speaking; / his words as pramāṇa — people accept.
जें जें जनास मानेना । तें तें जनहि मानीना ।
आपण येकला जन नाना । सृष्टिमधें
jem jem janāsa mānenā | tem tem janahi mānīnā |
āpaṇa yekalā jana nānā | sṛṣṭimadhem
What is not acceptable to people — people too do not accept. / One alone, people many — in the sṛṣṭi.
म्हणोन सांगाती असावे । मानत मानत शिकवावे ।
हळु हळु सेवटा न्यावे । विवेकानें
mhaṇona sāmgātī asāve | mānata mānata śikavāve |
haḷu haḷu sevaṭā nyāve | vivekānem
Therefore, companions should be; teach accepting-and-accepting; / gently, gently carry them to the end — by vivek.
परंतु हे विवेकाचीं कामें । विवेकी करील नेमें ।
इतर ते बापुडे भ्रमें । भांडोंच लागले
paramtu he vivekācīm kāmem | vivekī karīla nemem |
itara te bāpuḍe bhramem | bhāmḍomca lāgale
But these are tasks of vivek; the vivekī will do them by rule. / The rest, poor fellows, by bhrama — begin quarrelling.
बहुतांसीं भांडतां येकला । शैन्यावांचून पुरवला ।
याकारणें बहुतांला । राजी राखावें
bahutāmsīm bhāmḍatām yekalā | śainyāvāmcūna puravalā |
yākāraṇem bahutāmlā | rājī rākhāvem
Quarrelling with many, alone — without an army, he got through. / For this reason, many — should be kept happy.
