आत्मानात्मविवेक करावा । करून बरा विवरावा ।
ववरोन सदृढ धरावा । जीवामधें
ātmānātmaviveka karāvā | karūna barā vivarāvā |
vavarona sadṛḍha dharāvā | jīvāmadhem
Do ātma-anātma-vivek; having done, examine well. / Having examined, hold firmly — within the jīva.
आत्मा कोण अनात्मा कोण । त्याचें करावें विवरण ।
तेंचि आतां निरूपण । सावध ऐका
ātmā koṇa anātmā koṇa | tyācem karāvem vivaraṇa |
temci ātām nirūpaṇa | sāvadha aikā
Who is Ātman, who anātman? — do the examination of this. / That very nirūpaṇa now — alertly hear.
च्यारि खाणी च्यारि वाणी । चौर्यासि लक्ष जीवप्राणी ।
संख्या बोलिली पुराणीं । वर्तती आतां
cyāri khāṇī cyāri vāṇī | cauryāsi lakṣa jīvaprāṇī |
samkhyā bolilī purāṇīm | vartatī ātām
Four wombs, four speeches, 84-lakh creature-lives; / the count is spoken in the Purāṇas — they operate now.
नाना प्रकारीचीं शरीरें । सृष्टींत दिसती अपारें ।
तयामधें निर्धारें । आत्मा कवणु
nānā prakārīcīm śarīrem | sṛṣṭīmta disatī apārem |
tayāmadhem nirdhārem | ātmā kavaṇu
Various kinds of bodies — in creation, abundantly seen. / Among them, with certainty — which is Ātman?
दृष्टीमधें पाहातो । श्रवणामध्यें ऐकतो ।
रसनेमध्यें स्वाद घेतो । प्रत्यक्ष आतां
dṛṣṭīmadhem pāhāto | śravaṇāmadhyem aikato |
rasanemadhyem svāda gheto | pratyakṣa ātām
In the eye, he sees; in the ear, he hears; / in the tongue, he tastes — directly, now.
घ्राणामधें वास घेतो । सर्वांगी तो स्पर्शतो ।
वाचेमधें बोलवितो । जाणोनि शब्द
ghrāṇāmadhem vāsa gheto | sarvāmgī to sparśato |
vācemadhem bolavito | jāṇoni śabda
In the nose, he smells; in the whole body, he touches; / in speech, he speaks — knowing words.
सावधान आणि चंचळ । चहुंकडे चळवळ ।
येकलाचि चालवी सकळ । इंद्रियेंद्वारा
sāvadhāna āṇi camcaḷa | cahumkaḍe caḷavaḷa |
yekalāci cālavī sakaḷa | imdriyemdvārā
Alert and cañcala; on all sides, bustle; / he alone moves all — through the senses.
पाये चालवी हात हालवी । भृकुटी पालवी डोळा घालवी ।
संकेतखुणा बोलवी । तोचि आत्मा
pāye cālavī hāta hālavī | bhṛkuṭī pālavī ḍoḷā ghālavī |
samketakhuṇā bolavī | toci ātmā
Moves feet, waves hands; lifts eyebrows, rolls eyes; / conveys signs — he alone is Ātman.
धिटाई लाजवी खाजवी । खोंकवी वोकवी थुंकवी ।
अन्न जेऊन उदक सेवी । तोचि आत्मा
dhiṭāī lājavī khājavī | khomkavī vokavī thumkavī |
anna jeūna udaka sevī | toci ātmā
Emboldens, shames, scratches; coughs, vomits, spits; / eats food, drinks water — he alone is Ātman.
मळमूत्रत्याग करी । शरीरमात्र सावरी ।
प्रवृत्ति निवृत्ति विवरी । तोचि आत्मा
maḷamūtratyāga karī | śarīramātra sāvarī |
pravṛtti nivṛtti vivarī | toci ātmā
Excretes waste; supports every body; / examines pravṛtti, nivṛtti — he alone is Ātman.
ऐके देखे हुंगे चाखे । नाना प्रकारें वोळखे ।
संतोष पावे आणी धाके । तोचि आत्मा
aike dekhe humge cākhe | nānā prakārem voḷakhe |
samtoṣa pāve āṇī dhāke | toci ātmā
Hears, sees, smells, tastes; recognizes in many ways; / attains joy and dread — he alone is Ātman.
आनंद विनोद उदेग चिंता । काया छ्याया माया ममता ।
जीवित्वें पावे नाना वेथा । तोचि आत्मा
ānamda vinoda udega cimtā | kāyā chyāyā māyā mamatā |
jīvitvem pāve nānā vethā | toci ātmā
Joy, jest, agitation, worry; body, shadow, māyā, attachment; / by life, various afflictions he gets — he alone is Ātman.
पदार्थाची आस्था धरी । जनीं वाईट बरें करी ।
आपल्यां राखे पराव्यां मारी । तोचि आत्मा
padārthācī āsthā dharī | janīm vāīṭa barem karī |
āpalyām rākhe parāvyām mārī | toci ātmā
Craves objects; among people does good-and-bad; / protects his own, strikes strangers — he alone is Ātman.
युध्ये होतां दोहीकडे । नाना शरीरीं वावडे ।
परस्परें पाडी पडे । तोचि आत्मा
yudhye hotām dohīkaḍe | nānā śarīrīm vāvaḍe |
parasparem pāḍī paḍe | toci ātmā
When war happens on both sides, he roams in various bodies. / Kills one another, falls — he alone is Ātman.
तो येतो जातो देहीं वर्ततो । हासतो रडतो प्रस्तावतो ।
समर्थ करंटा होतो । व्यापासारिखा
to yeto jāto dehīm vartato | hāsato raḍato prastāvato |
samartha karamṭā hoto | vyāpāsārikhā
He comes, goes, operates in body; laughs, cries, rebukes. / Powerful, failed — becomes as the enterprise.
होतो लंडी होतो बळकट । होतो विद्यावंत होतो धट ।
न्यायेवंत होतो उत्धट । तोचि आत्मा
hoto lamḍī hoto baḷakaṭa | hoto vidyāvamta hoto dhaṭa |
nyāyevamta hoto utdhaṭa | toci ātmā
Becomes coward, becomes strong; becomes learned, becomes strong-of-body; / becomes just, becomes arrogant — he alone is Ātman.
धीर उदार आणि कृपेण । वेडा आणि विचक्षण ।
उछक आणि सहिष्ण । तोचि आत्मा
dhīra udāra āṇi kṛpeṇa | veḍā āṇi vicakṣaṇa |
uchaka āṇi sahiṣṇa | toci ātmā
Steady, generous, and miserly; foolish, and insightful; / restless, and forbearing — he alone is Ātman.
विद्या कुविद्या दोहिकडे । आनंदरूप वावडे ।
जेथें तेथें सर्वांकडे । तोचि आत्मा
vidyā kuvidyā dohikaḍe | ānamdarūpa vāvaḍe |
jethem tethem sarvāmkaḍe | toci ātmā
Vidyā, kuvidyā, on both sides; roams in joy-form; / here-there, on every side — he alone is Ātman.
निजे उठे बैसे चाले । धावे धावडी डोले तोले ।
सोइरे धायेरे केले । तोचि आत्मा
nije uṭhe baise cāle | dhāve dhāvaḍī ḍole tole |
soire dhāyere kele | toci ātmā
Sleeps, rises, sits, walks; runs, causes-to-run, sways, balances; / makes kin-and-wet-nurses — he alone is Ātman.
पोथी वाची अर्थ सांगे । ताळ धरी गाऊं लागे ।
वाद वेवाद वाउगे । तोचि आत्मा
pothī vācī artha sāmge | tāḷa dharī gāūm lāge |
vāda vevāda vāuge | toci ātmā
Reads scripture, explains meaning; keeps rhythm, begins to sing; / disputes and counter-disputes — he alone is Ātman.
आत्मा नस्तां देहांतरीं । मग तें प्रेत सचराचरीं ।
देहसंगें आत्मा करीं । सर्व कांहीं
ātmā nastām dehāmtarīm | maga tem preta sacarācarīm |
dehasamgem ātmā karīm | sarva kāmhīm
Without Ātman, the body — then it is a corpse, in moving-and-unmoving. / By body-association, Ātman does — all.
येकेंविण येक काये । कामा नये वायां जाये ।
म्हणोनि हा उपाये । देहयोगें
yekemviṇa yeka kāye | kāmā naye vāyām jāye |
mhaṇoni hā upāye | dehayogem
One without the other is what? Useless, goes in vain. / Therefore this is the means — by body-conjunction.
देह अनित्य आत्मा नित्य । हाचि विवेक नित्यानित्य ।
अवघें सूक्ष्माचें कृत्य । जाणती ज्ञानी
deha anitya ātmā nitya | hāci viveka nityānitya |
avaghem sūkṣmācem kṛtya | jāṇatī jñānī
Body is anitya, Ātman is nitya — this itself is nitya-anitya-vivek. / All is the activity of the subtle — jñānīs know.
पिंडी देहधर्ता जीव । ब्रह्मांडीं देहधर्ता शिव ।
ईश्वरतनुचतुष्टये सर्व । ईश्वर धर्ता
pimḍī dehadhartā jīva | brahmāmḍīm dehadhartā śiva |
īśvaratanucatuṣṭaye sarva | īśvara dhartā
In piṇḍa, the deha-dharā is jīva; in brahmāṇḍa, deha-dharā is Śiva. / Īśvara is the dharā of all Īśvara-tanu-catuṣṭaya.
त्रिगुणापर्ता जो ईश्वर । अर्धनारीनटेश्वर ।
सकळ सृष्टीचा विस्तार । तेथून जाला
triguṇāpartā jo īśvara | ardhanārīnaṭeśvara |
sakaḷa sṛṣṭīcā vistāra | tethūna jālā
Īśvara beyond tri-guṇas — Ardhanārī-Naṭeśvara. / The expansion of all sṛṣṭi — arose from there.
बरवें विचारून पाहीं । स्त्री पुरुष तेथें नाहीं ।
चंचळरूप येतें कांहीं । प्रत्ययासी
baravem vicārūna pāhīm | strī puruṣa tethem nāhīm |
camcaḷarūpa yetem kāmhīm | pratyayāsī
Examine well — there is no man or woman. / The cañcala-form — something — comes to pratyaya.
मुळींहून सेंवटवरी । ब्रह्मादि पिप्लीका देहधारी ।
नित्यानित्य विवेक चतुरीं । जाणिजे ऐसा
muḷīmhūna semvaṭavarī | brahmādi piplīkā dehadhārī |
nityānitya viveka caturīm | jāṇije aisā
From root to end — from Brahmā to ant, all body-bearers. / Nitya-anitya vivek by the clever — should be known as such.
जड तितुकें अनित्य । आणि सूक्ष्म तितुकें नित्य ।
याहिमध्यें नित्यानित्य । पुढें निरोपिलें
jaḍa titukem anitya | āṇi sūkṣma titukem nitya |
yāhimadhyem nityānitya | puḍhem niropilem
Whatever is inert — is anitya; whatever is subtle — is nitya. / Even among these, nitya-anitya — will be expounded ahead.
स्थूळ सूक्ष्म वोलांडिलें । कारण माहाकाराण सांडिलें ।
विराट हिरण्यगर्भ खंडिलें । विवेकानें
sthūḷa sūkṣma volāmḍilem | kāraṇa māhākārāṇa sāmḍilem |
virāṭa hiraṇyagarbha khamḍilem | vivekānem
Crossed sthūla-sūkṣma; abandoned kāraṇa-mahākāraṇa; / broke virāṭ-hiraṇyagarbha — by vivek.
अव्याकृत मूळप्रकृती। तेथें जाऊन बैसली वृत्ती ।
तें वृत्ति व्हावया निवृत्ति । निरूपण ऐका
avyākṛta mūḷaprakṛtī | tethem jāūna baisalī vṛttī |
tem vṛtti vhāvayā nivṛtti | nirūpaṇa aikā
Avyākṛta, mūla-prakṛti — the vṛtti went and sat there. / That vṛtti to become nivṛtti — hear the nirūpaṇa.
आत्मानात्माविवेक बोलिला । चंचळात्मा प्रत्यया आला ।
पुढिले समासीं निरोपिला । सारासार विचार
ātmānātmāviveka bolilā | camcaḷātmā pratyayā ālā |
puḍhile samāsīm niropilā | sārāsāra vicāra
Ātma-anātma-vivek was spoken; cañcala-ātman came to pratyaya. / In the next samāsa — sāra-asāra-vicāra — will be expounded.
