कोणी येक दोघे जण । पृथ्वी फिरती उदासीन ।
काळक्रमणें लागून । कथा आरंभिली
koṇī yeka doghe jaṇa | pṛthvī phiratī udāsīna |
kāḷakramaṇem lāgūna | kathā ārambhilī
Two persons, detached, roamed the earth. / To spend time, a story was begun.
श्रोता पुसे वक्तयासी । काहाणी सांगा जी बरवीसी ।
वक्ता म्हणे श्रोतयासी । सावध ऐकें
śrotā puse vaktayāsī | kāhāṇī sāmgā jī baravīsī |
vaktā mhaṇe śrotayāsī | sāvadha aikem
The listener asks the vaktā: 'Please tell a fine story.' / The vaktā says to the listener: 'Alertly hear.'
येकें स्त्रीपुरुषें होतीं । उभयेतांमधें बहु प्रीति ।
येकरूपेंचि वर्तती । भिन्न नाहीं
yekem strīpuruṣem hotīm | ubhayetāmmadhem bahu prīti |
yekarūpemci vartatī | bhinna nāhīm
There were a man and woman; between them great love. / Conducted as one — no separation.
ऐसा कांहीं येक काळ लोटला । तयांस येक पुत्र जाला ।
कार्यकर्ता आणि भला । सर्वविषीं
aisā kāmhīm yeka kāḷa loṭalā | tayāmsa yeka putra jālā |
kāryakartā āṇi bhalā | sarvaviṣīm
Some time passed; to them a son was born — / a do-er, and good — in every matter.
पुढें त्यासहि जाला कुमर । तो पित्याहून आतुर ।
कांहीं तदर्ध चतुर । व्यापकपणें
puḍhem tyāsahi jālā kumara | to pityāhūna ātura |
kāmhīm tadardha catura | vyāpakapaṇem
Then he too had a son; more eager than his father; / somewhat half-as-clever — extensively.
तेणें व्याप उदंड केला । बहुत कन्यापुत्र व्याला ।
उदंड लोक संचिला । नाना प्रकारें
teṇem vyāpa udamḍa kelā | bahuta kanyāputra vyālā |
udamḍa loka samcilā | nānā prakārem
He did much work; begot many sons-and-daughters; / gathered many people — in various ways.
त्याचा पुत्र जेष्ठ । तो अज्ञान आणि रागिट ।
अथवा चुकता नीट । संव्हार करी
tyācā putra jeṣṭha | to ajñāna āṇi rāgiṭa |
athavā cukatā nīṭa | samvhāra karī
His eldest son — was ignorant and angry; / or missing [rule], destroyed straightway.
पिता उगाच बैसला । लेकें बहुत व्याप केला ।
सर्वज्ञ जाणता भला । जेष्ठ पुत्र
pitā ugāca baisalā | lekem bahuta vyāpa kelā |
sarvajña jāṇatā bhalā | jeṣṭha putra
The father sat idle; the son did much work. / The all-knowing, good — was the eldest son.
नातु त्याचें अर्ध जाणें । पणतु तो कांहींच नेणे ।
चुकतां संव्हारणें । माहा क्रोधी
nātu tyācem ardha jāṇem | paṇatu to kāmhīmca neṇe |
cukatām samvhāraṇem | māhā krodhī
The grandson knew half of his; the great-grandson knew nothing; / on missing [rule], he destroyed — very angrily.
लेक सकळांचे पाळण करी । नातु मेळवी वरिचावरी ।
पणतु चुकल्यां संव्हार करी । अकस्मात
leka sakaḷāmce pāḷaṇa karī | nātu meḷavī varicāvarī |
paṇatu cukalyām samvhāra karī | akasmāta
Son nourishes all; grandson gathers ever more; / great-grandson, on slip, destroys — suddenly.
नेमस्तपणें वंश वाढला । विस्तार उदंडचि जाला ।
ऐसा बहुत काळ गेला । आनंदरूप
nemastapaṇem vamśa vāḍhalā | vistāra udamḍaci jālā |
aisā bahuta kāḷa gelā | ānamdarūpa
Rigorously the lineage grew; expansion became abundant. / Much time passed — in joy-form.
विस्तार वाढला गणवेना । वडिलांस कोणीच मानिना ।
परस्परें किंत मना । बहुत पडिला
vistāra vāḍhalā gaṇavenā | vaḍilāmsa koṇīca māninā |
parasparem kimta manā | bahuta paḍilā
Expansion grew beyond counting; no one respected the elders; / mutual doubts — grew much.
उदंड घरकऴो लागला । तेणें कित्येक संव्हार जाला ।
विपट पडिलें थोर थोरांला । बेबंद जालें
udamḍa gharakaḻo lāgalā | teṇem kityeka samvhāra jālā |
vipaṭa paḍilem thora thorāmlā | bebamda jālem
Much household quarrel began; by that, several destructions; / chaos befell the greatest ones — disorder arose.
नेणपणें भरी भरले । मग ते अवघेच संव्हारले ।
जैसे यादव निमाले । उन्मत्तपणें
neṇapaṇem bharī bharale | maga te avagheca samvhārale |
jaise yādava nimāle | unmattapaṇem
By ignorance they became filled; then they all were destroyed. / As the Yādavas perished — by intoxication.
बाप लेक नातु पणतु । सकळांचा जाला निपातु ।
कन्या पुत्र हेतु मातु । अणुमात्र नाहीं
bāpa leka nātu paṇatu | sakaḷāmcā jālā nipātu |
kanyā putra hetu mātu | aṇumātra nāhīm
Father, son, grandson, great-grandson — all were annihilated. / Son, daughter, intent, mother — none at all.
ऐसी काहाणी जो विवरला । तो जन्मापासून सुटला ।
श्रोता वक्ता धन्य जाला । प्रचितीनें
aisī kāhāṇī jo vivaralā | to janmāpāsūna suṭalā |
śrotā vaktā dhanya jālā | pracitīnem
Such a story, he who examines — is released from birth. / Listener, speaker — blessed become — by pratīti.
ऐसी काहाणी अपूर्व जे ते । उदंड वेळ होत जाते ।
इतकें बोलोन गोसावी ते । निवांत जाले
aisī kāhāṇī apūrva je te | udamḍa veḷa hota jāte |
itakem bolona gosāvī te | nivāmta jāle
Such a wondrous story — occurs for a long time. / Saying this much, the gosāvīs — became quiet.
आमची काहाणी सरो । तुमचे अंतरीं भरो ।
ऐसें बोलणें विवरो । कोणीतरी
āmacī kāhāṇī saro | tumace amtarīm bharo |
aisem bolaṇem vivaro | koṇītarī
Let our story end; let it be impressed in your inner-being. / Such speech — should be examined — by someone.
चुकत वांकत आठवलें । एतुकें संकळित बोलिलें ।
न्यूनपूर्ण क्ष्मा केलें । पाहिजे श्रोतीं
cukata vāmkata āṭhavalem | etukem samkaḷita bolilem |
nyūnapūrṇa kṣmā kelem | pāhije śrotīm
Mistaking, missing, remembering — so much is told in brief. / Pardon the excesses and omissions — listeners.
ऐसी काहाणी निरंतर । विवेकें ऐकती जे नर ।
दास म्हणे जग्गोधार । तेचि आरिती
aisī kāhāṇī niramtara | vivekem aikatī je nara |
dāsa mhaṇe jaggodhāra | teci āritī
Such a story continuously — the men who hear with vivek — / Das says: 'They alone are those — who uplift the world.'
त्या जगोद्धाराचें लक्षण । केले पाहिजे विवरण ।
सार निवडावें निरूपण । यास बोलिजे
tyā jagoddhārācem lakṣaṇa | kele pāhije vivaraṇa |
sāra nivaḍāvem nirūpaṇa | yāsa bolije
Of that world-upliftment, the mark — should be examined. / 'Select the sāra in nirūpaṇa' — this is what is said.
निरूपणीं प्रत्ययें विवरावें । नाना तत्वकोडें उकलावें ।
समजतां समजतां व्हावें । निःसंदेह
nirūpaṇīm pratyayem vivarāvem | nānā tatvakoḍem ukalāvem |
samajatām samajatām vhāvem | niḥsamdeha
In nirūpaṇa, examine by pratyaya; unlock the tattva-riddle; / on understanding-and-understanding, become — niḥ-sandeha.
विवरोन पाहातां अष्ट देह । पुढें सहजचि निःसंदेह ।
अखंड निरूपणें राहे । समाधान
vivarona pāhātām aṣṭa deha | puḍhem sahajaci niḥsamdeha |
akhamḍa nirūpaṇem rāhe | samādhāna
Examining the eight bodies — ahead, spontaneously niḥ-sandeha. / Unbroken by nirūpaṇa remains — samādhāna.
तत्वांचा गल्बला जेथें । निवांत कैचें असेल तेथें ।
याकारणें गुल्लिपरतें । कोणीयेकें असावें
tatvāmcā galbalā jethem | nivāmta kaicem asela tethem |
yākāraṇem gulliparatem | koṇīyekem asāvem
Where there is commotion of tattvas, quietness — how is there? / For this, apart from [commotion] — someone should be.
ऐसा सूक्ष्म संवाद । केलाचि करावा विशद ।
पुढिले समासीं लघुबोध । सावध ऐका
aisā sūkṣma samvāda | kelāci karāvā viśada |
puḍhile samāsīm laghubodha | sāvadha aikā
Such subtle dialogue — should be made clear. / In the coming samāsa, a brief pointer — alertly hear.
