Dashak 14 · Samāsa 1

80 ovis

aikā spṛhācī sikavaṇa | yukti buddhi śāhāṇapaṇa | jeṇem rāhe samādhāna | niramtara
Hear the niṣpṛha's teaching — yukti, buddhi, wisdom; / by which samādhāna remains — continuously.
Rāmdās opens Dashak 14 with an invitation: hear the niṣpṛha's (the desireless one's) teaching — the practical skill (yukti), intelligence (buddhi), and wisdom by which unbroken inner contentment (samādhāna) is sustained. What follows is a long checklist for exactly that person.
As you read this list of do's and don'ts, treat it as training for staying settled inside, not as a set of external rules to perform for others.
sopā mamtra parī nemasta | sādhem voṣadha guṇavamta | sādhem bolaṇem sapracita | taisem mājhem
Simple mantra yet rigorous; simple medicine yet effective; / simple speech yet true — so is mine.
He calls his teaching a simple mantra that is nonetheless exacting, a simple medicine that is nonetheless effective, simple speech that is nonetheless true. The simplicity of the coming instructions should not be mistaken for triviality.
Don't dismiss a piece of advice as 'too basic to matter' — test whether you're actually living by even the simple things before reaching for something more elaborate.
tatkāḷaci avaguṇa jātī | uttama guṇācī hoye prāptī | śabdavoṣadha tīvra śrotīm | sākṣapem sevāvem
At once defects go; excellent virtues are attained. / This word-medicine is potent — listeners, sip attentively.
Defects vanish at once and good qualities are gained through this 'word-medicine' — but only if listeners drink it in attentively (sākṣepeṃ), not passively.
Read the list that follows slowly enough to actually apply one item today, rather than skimming it as background information.
nispṛhatā dharūm naye | dharilī tarī soḍūm naye | soḍilī tarī himḍom naye | voḷakhīmadhem
Do not take up niṣpṛhatā [lightly]; once taken, do not abandon it. / If abandoned, do not wander — among acquaintances.
The governing rule for the whole samāsa: do not take up niṣpṛhatā (desirelessness) casually; once taken up, never abandon it; and if it is abandoned, do not go on wandering among your old acquaintances as though nothing happened. Commitment, once made, is binding, and a broken commitment shouldn't be papered over by returning to your old social circle.
Before you commit to giving something up, be honest about whether you can sustain it — and if you slip, don't pretend to your old crowd that nothing changed.
kāmtā dṛṣṭī rākhom naye | manāsa goḍī cākhaūm naye | dhāriṣṭa caḷatām dākhaūm naye | mukha āpulem
Do not look upon wife; do not let mind taste sweetness. / Do not show [weakness] when resolve shakes — do not show your face.
Concrete disciplines begin: do not gaze upon a wife with attachment; do not let the mind taste sweetness in sensory pleasure; and do not let your face show your wavering when resolve (dhāriṣṭa) starts to shake.
When you feel your resolve slipping in a moment of temptation, don't broadcast the wavering to others — steady yourself privately first.
yekesthaḷīm rāhom naye | kānakomḍem sāhom naye | dravya dārā pāhom naye | āḷakepaṇem
Do not stay in one place; do not tolerate embarrassment; / do not look at money, women — sloth-fully.
Do not settle permanently in one place; do not tolerate embarrassment that compromises your standards; and do not look at money or women out of laziness — out of a slack, undisciplined mind. Restlessness in the right sense, refusing to settle into complacent attachment, is prescribed.
If you notice you're tolerating a compromising situation just because moving on feels like effort, treat that laziness as the real problem to fix.
ācārabhraṣṭa hoūm naye | dilyām dravya gheūm naye | uṇā śabda yeūm naye | āpaṇāvarī
Do not violate conduct; do not take money when given; / do not allow blame — to fall on oneself.
Do not violate right conduct; do not accept money even when it is offered; and do not let blame fall upon yourself through careless dealing. Financial and ethical cleanliness go together.
When offered money or favors that come with strings, decline even if it costs you something — protecting your integrity matters more than the gain.
bhikṣeviṣīm lājom naye | bahuta bhikṣā gheūm naye | pusatāmhi deūm naye | voḷakhī āpalī
Do not be ashamed regarding alms; do not take abundant alms; / even when asked, do not tell — your own identity.
Regarding alms (bhikṣā): do not feel ashamed to beg, but also do not take more than is needed; and even when asked directly, do not reveal your own identity — lineage, background, status. Humility here means neither false pride nor self-promotion.
When you receive help, take only what you actually need, and resist the urge to use your background or credentials to get more than others would.
dhaḍa maḷina nesom naye | goḍa anna khāūm naye | durāgraha karūm naye | prasamgem vartāvem
Do not wear ragged-dirty; do not eat sweet food; / do not insist stubbornly — live per occasion.
Do not dress in fine or elaborate clothing; do not eat sweet or rich food; and do not insist stubbornly on your own way — instead adapt to the occasion (prasaṃgeṃ vartāve).
Notice one place today where you're insisting on comfort or your preferred way out of stubbornness, and yield it to fit the actual situation instead.
bhogīm mana asom naye | dehaduḥkhem trāsom naye | puḍhem āśā dharūm naye | jīvitvācī
Do not let mind be on enjoyment; do not get upset at body-sufferings; / do not hold hope ahead — of life.
Do not let the mind dwell on enjoyment (bhoga); do not be distressed by the body's sufferings; and do not hold onto hope for a longer life ahead. Detachment extends even to the desire for continued embodied existence.
The next time physical discomfort makes you anxious, notice the anxiety as attachment to comfort rather than treating the discomfort itself as the problem.
viraktī gaḷom deūm naye | dhāriṣṭa caḷom deūm naye | jñāna maḷiṇa hoūm naye | vivekabaḷem
Do not let virakti leak; do not let resolve shake; / do not let jñāna be polluted — by vivek-strength.
Do not let dispassion (viraktī) leak away; do not let resolve waver; and do not let clear knowledge (jñāna) become clouded — guard all three by the strength of discrimination (vivekabaḷeṃ).
Pick the one of these three — dispassion, resolve, or clarity — that you personally leak the fastest, and set a daily check-in to catch it early.
karuṇākīrtana soḍūm naye | amtardhyāna moḍūm naye || prematamtu toḍūm naye | saguṇamūrtīcā
Do not abandon karuṇā-kīrtana; do not break inner-dhyāna. / Do not cut the love-thread — of the saguṇa-mūrti.
Do not abandon compassionate devotional singing (karuṇā-kīrtana); do not break inner meditation (antardhyāna); and do not sever the thread of love (prema-tantu) that binds you to the Deity's embodied form (saguṇa-mūrti). The devotional practices, not just the ascetic disciplines, must be kept intact.
Keep at least one daily devotional or reflective practice non-negotiable, even on days when your renunciate discipline elsewhere feels solid enough on its own.
poṭīm cimtā dharūm naye | kaṣṭem kheda mānūm naye | samaim dhīra sāmḍūm naye | kāmhīm kelyā
Do not hold worry in belly; do not regard labour as grief; / at occasion do not abandon patience — no matter what.
Do not hold worry in the belly — do not carry anxiety internally; do not regard hard labor as a source of grief; and no matter what happens, do not abandon patience (dhīra) at the critical moment.
When a task gets genuinely hard, catch yourself before you relabel the effort as suffering — reframe it as simply the work, and keep going.
apamānitām siṇom naye | nikhamditām kaṣṭom naye | dhiḥkāritām jhurom naye | kāmhīm kelyā
When dishonored, do not be tired; when insulted, do not be pained; / when despised, do not fret — no matter what.
When dishonored, do not grow weary; when insulted, do not be pained; when despised, do not fret — no matter what is done to you. This continues the equanimity-under-attack theme begun in 14.1.013.
The next time someone insults or dismisses you, notice the sting, let it pass through without retaliating or spiraling, and continue what you were doing.
lokalāja dharūm naye | lājavitām lājom naye | khijavitām khijom naye | virakta puruṣem
Do not feel public-shame; when shamed, do not be ashamed; / when provoked, do not be provoked — as a virakta-puruṣa.
Do not hold public shame (lokalāja, excessive concern for reputation); when shamed by others, do not feel ashamed; when provoked, do not be provoked — such is the conduct of the truly detached person (virakta puruṣa).
Separate what other people think of you from what you actually did wrong; if you did nothing wrong, let their disapproval pass without internalizing shame.
śuddha mārga soḍūm naye | durjanāsīm tamḍom naye | samamdha paḍom deūm naye | cāmḍāḷāsī
Do not abandon the pure path; do not quarrel with the wicked; / do not let connection fall — with the caṇḍāla.
Do not abandon the pure path; do not quarrel with the wicked; and do not let yourself fall into close connection with the degraded. Avoid both compromising your standard and picking unnecessary fights.
When you encounter someone acting badly, disengage rather than argue, and don't let their company become a habit.
tapīḷapaṇa dharūm naye | bhāmḍavitām bhāmḍom naye | uḍavitām uḍaūm naye | nijasthitī āpulī
Do not take to austere-spite; when pressed to fight, do not fight; / when flown off, do not fly — your own nija-sthiti.
Do not take to bitter spitefulness (tapīḷapaṇa); when pressed to fight, do not fight; when knocked off balance, do not let your own true condition (nija-sthiti) fly off with it. Stability under provocation, not reactive matching, is the standard.
When someone tries to provoke a fight, treat your calm as the thing you're protecting, not your point — walk away rather than match their aggression.
hāmsavitām hāsom naye | bolavitām bolom naye | cālavitām cālom naye | kṣaṇakṣṇā
When made to laugh, do not laugh; when made to speak, do not speak; / when made to walk, do not walk — moment-to-moment.
When made to laugh, do not laugh on command; when made to speak, do not speak on command; when made to walk somewhere, do not walk merely because pushed — moment to moment, do not let others dictate your responses.
Before reacting to social pressure to laugh along, speak up, or go along with something, pause long enough to check it's actually your own choice.
yeka veṣa dharūm naye | yeka sāja karūm naye | yekadesī hoūm naye | bhramaṇa karāvem
Do not hold one appearance; do not do one dress-up; / do not become one-regional — wander about.
Do not hold to one fixed appearance, one costume, or one region — wander (bhramaṇa karāve). Attachment to a settled identity or a settled place is itself a subtle bondage the niṣpṛha must avoid.
Notice if you've grown attached to a particular self-image or location as part of your identity, and deliberately vary it to loosen the grip.
salagī paḍom deūm naye | pratigraha gheūm naye | sabhemadhyem baisom naye | sarvakāḷa
Do not allow familiarity; do not take pratigraha (accepting gifts); / do not sit in assembly — always.
Do not allow undue familiarity (salagī) to develop; do not accept pratigraha — formal gifts or grants; and do not sit continuously in public assemblies. Boundaries around closeness, gifts, and public presence all protect the same freedom.
Notice a relationship where familiarity has quietly eroded a boundary you meant to keep, and re-establish it plainly.
nema āmgīm lāūm naye | bharavasā koṇāsa deūm naye | amgīkāra karūm naye | nemastapaṇācā
Do not fix a rule on the body; do not give trust to anyone; / do not take up rigorous promises.
Do not bind the body to a fixed rule (nema); do not give your trust blindly to anyone; and do not take up rigorous vows that lock you into external forms. Even discipline itself must not calcify into rigid attachment.
Before adopting a new strict rule for yourself, ask whether it serves your actual growth or has become a badge you're attached to.
nityanema sāmḍūm naye | abhyāsa buḍom deūm naye | paratamtra hoūm naye | kāmhīm kelyām
Do not abandon the daily-niyama; do not let practice sink; / do not become dependent — no matter what.
Yet do not abandon your daily practice (nityanema) either, and do not let your spiritual training (abhyāsa) lapse; and no matter what happens, do not become dependent on others (paratantra). Balancing 14.1.021's warning against rigidity, this insists the core daily discipline itself must never be dropped.
Identify your one non-negotiable daily practice and protect it even when circumstances make everything else erratic.
svatamtratā moḍūm naye | nirāpekṣā toḍūm naye | parāpekṣā hoūm naye | kṣaṇakṣṇā
Do not break svatantra-tā; do not snap nirapekṣā (non-expectation); / do not become dependent on others — moment-to-moment.
Do not break your independence (svatantratā); do not snap your freedom from expectation (nirapekṣā); and moment to moment, do not slide into dependence on others' expectations (parāpekṣā).
Catch the moments when you start shaping your choices around what others expect of you, and consciously return to your own considered judgment.
vaibhava dṛṣṭīm pāhom naye | upādhīsukhem rāhom naye | yekāmta moḍūm deūm naye | svarūpasthitīcā
Do not look at wealth; do not stay in upādhi-sukhas; / do not let the solitude break — of svarūpa-sthiti.
Do not look upon wealth with longing; do not settle into the comfort of worldly entanglements (upādhi-sukha); and do not let the solitude proper to abiding in one's true nature (svarūpa-sthiti) be broken.
Protect a period of real solitude in your day, and treat any comfort that threatens to swallow it as a warning sign, not a reward.
anargaḷatā karūm naye | lokalāja dharūm naye | koṭhemtarī hoūm naye | āsakta kadām
Do not become unrestrained; do not hold public-shame; / never become attached — anywhere.
Do not become unrestrained (anargaḷatā); do not hold public shame, repeating the warning of 14.1.015; and never, anywhere, become attached (āsakta).
Pick one place — a habit, a person, a possession — where you notice growing attachment, and consciously loosen your grip on it this week.
paramparā toḍūm naye | uāpādhī moḍūm deūm naye | jñānamārge soḍūm naye | kadākāḷīm
Do not break the lineage; do not let upādhi break; / never abandon the jñāna-path.
Do not break the lineage (paramparā) of teaching and tradition; do not let entanglement (upādhi) break it either; and never, under any circumstance, abandon the path of knowledge (jñānamārga).
Keep your connection to whatever taught you your discipline — teacher, text, tradition — active, rather than letting busyness quietly sever it.
karmamārga sāmḍūm naye | vairāgya moḍūm deūm naye | sādhana bhajana khamḍūm naye | kadākāḷīm
Do not abandon the karma-path; do not let vairāgya break; / never abandon sādhana, bhajana.
Do not abandon the path of right action (karmamārga); do not let dispassion (vairāgya) break; and never abandon spiritual practice and devotional singing (sādhana, bhajana). Action, dispassion, and practice must all be sustained together, not traded off against each other.
If you've let your practice slide while staying busy with good works, or let your good works slide while retreating into practice, bring both back into balance this week.
ativāda karūm naye | anitya poṭīm dhaūm naye | rāgem bharīm bharom naye | bhalatīkaḍe
Do not engage in excessive dispute; do not hold [things] as non-eternal in belly; / do not fly into rage — in wrong direction.
Do not engage in excessive argument (ativāda); do not let a sense of impermanence gnaw inside the belly unspoken; and do not fly into anger in the wrong direction — misdirected at the wrong target.
When you feel anger rising, pause to check whether you're about to aim it at the wrong person or issue before you speak.
na manī tyāsa sāmgom naye | kamṭāḷavāṇem bolom naye | bahusāla aso naye | yekem sthaḷīm
Do not tell one who does not accept; do not speak tedious words; / do not stay too much — in one place.
Do not tell your teaching to one whose mind will not accept it; do not speak in a tedious, wearisome way; and do not overstay in a single place. Effective teaching requires reading the audience and knowing when to move on.
Before pressing an important point with someone who has already shown they won't hear it, stop and save your words for someone who will.
kāmhīm upādhī karūm naye | kelī tarī dharūm naye | dharilī tarī sāmpaḍom naye | upādhīmadhyem
Do not do much upādhi; if done, do not hold to it; / if held, do not be caught — in upādhi.
Do not take on much entanglement (upādhi, worldly complication); if it is done, do not hold onto it; and if held, do not get caught inside it. This is a three-stage failsafe against getting progressively trapped.
If you've already gotten pulled into a complicated obligation, look for the earliest exit rather than waiting until you're fully entangled.
thorapaṇem aso naye | mahattva dharūna baisom naye | kāmhīm māna ichūm naye | koṭhemtarī
Do not remain in greatness; do not sit holding eminence; / do not desire respect — anywhere.
Do not remain in a state of self-importance (thorapaṇa); do not sit holding onto eminence (mahattva); and do not desire respect anywhere. Status-seeking, even earned status, is treated as a trap for the niṣpṛha.
The next time you're tempted to remind someone of your status or accomplishments, let the moment pass without claiming the recognition.
sādhepaṇa soḍūm naye | sānepaṇa moḍūm naye | baḷātkārem joḍūm naye | abhimāna āmgīm
Do not abandon simplicity; do not break smallness; / do not forcibly join — pride onto body.
Do not abandon simplicity (sādhepaṇa); do not break your smallness or humility (sānepaṇa); and do not forcibly graft pride onto yourself. Humility must be genuinely maintained, not artificially performed or artificially resisted.
Watch for moments where you're tempted to inflate your role in a story you're telling, and tell it plainly instead.
adhikārevīṇa sāmgom naye | dāṭūna upadeśa deūm naye | kānakomḍā karūm naye | paramārtha kadā
Do not teach without adhikāra; do not forcibly give upadeśa; / never make paramārtha — a corner of embarrassment.
Do not teach without proper authority (adhikāra) to do so; do not force spiritual instruction (upadeśa) on someone unwilling; and never turn the spiritual path (paramārtha) into a source of embarrassment by overreaching.
Before offering unsolicited spiritual or moral advice, check whether you actually have the relationship and standing to be heard, and hold back if you don't.
kaṭhīṇa vairāgya soḍūm naye | kaṭhīṇa abhyāsa sāmḍūm naye | kaṭhiṇatā dharūm naye | koṇekeviśaim
Do not abandon hard vairāgya; do not abandon hard practice; / do not hold hardness — in any matter.
Do not abandon hard-won dispassion (vairāgya); do not abandon hard practice (abhyāsa); yet do not hold rigid hardness (kaṭhiṇatā) as an attitude toward anything. The discipline should be firm, but the disposition toward others should not be hardened.
Keep the difficulty in your own practice, but soften your attitude toward people and situations that don't meet your standard.
kaṭhīṇa śabda bolom naye | kaṭhīṇa ājñā karūm naye | kaṭhīṇa dhīratva soḍūm naye | kāmhīm kelyām
Do not speak hard words; do not give hard commands; / do not abandon hard patience — no matter what.
Do not speak harsh words; do not give harsh commands; yet no matter what happens, do not abandon firm patience (dhīratva). Firmness of resolve and gentleness of speech are meant to coexist.
Practice giving the same instruction you'd normally state harshly, but in a calm and patient tone, without softening the actual content.
āpaṇa āsakta hoūm naye | kelyāvīṇa sāmgom naye | bahusāla māgom naye | śiṣyavargāmsī
Do not become attached yourself; do not tell without doing; / do not demand much — from śiṣyas.
Do not become personally attached to disciples or outcomes; do not claim to have done something you have not done; and do not demand too much from your students (śiṣyavarga). A teacher's integrity rests on not overclaiming and not overreaching.
Before asking a student, employee, or junior for more effort, check that you are actually modeling that same effort yourself.
utdhaṭa śabda bolom naye | imdriyemsmaraṇa karūm naye | śāktamārgem bharom naye | muktapaṇem bharīm
Do not speak arrogant words; do not recall sense-objects; / do not engage in Śākta-path — by free-claim.
Do not speak arrogant words; do not dwell in memory on sense-objects and desired pleasures; and do not drift into permissive practices under the false claim of already being free (muktapaṇeṃ).
Don't use the idea that you've 'already transcended' temptation as an excuse to indulge in it — treat every real temptation as still requiring discipline.
nīca kṛtīm lājom naye | vaibhava hotām mājom naye | krodhem bharīm bharom naye | jāṇapaṇem
Do not be ashamed of low acts; do not be puffed when vaibhava comes; / do not be filled with krodha — by knower-hood.
Do not be ashamed of doing humble, lowly tasks; do not become puffed up when wealth or prosperity comes; and do not let anger fill you under the guise of superior knowledge (jñānapaṇeṃ), using your wisdom as an excuse to be righteously furious.
The next time you're tempted to justify anger by claiming moral or intellectual high ground, notice the anger for what it is and let it go instead.
thorapaṇem cukom naye | nyāye nīti sāmḍūm naye | apramāṇa vartom naye | kāmhīm kelyā
Do not miss in greatness; do not abandon nīti-nyāya; / do not conduct unauthoritatively — no matter what.
Do not err through a sense of your own greatness; do not abandon ethics and justice (nīti-nyāya); and no matter what happens, do not act on insufficient authority or evidence (apramāṇa).
Before acting on a claim or accusation, verify it properly rather than trusting your own sense of certainty.
kaḷalyāvīṇa bolom naye | anumānem niścaye karūm naye | sāmgatām duḥkha dharūm naye | mūrkhapaṇem
Do not speak without knowing; do not determine by inference; / do not hold grief — when told — by foolishness.
Do not speak about something without actually knowing it; do not settle a conclusion by mere inference (anumāna) alone; and do not foolishly grieve when someone tells you a hard truth.
When receiving hard feedback, resist the reflex to feel wounded and instead check whether it's accurate before reacting.
sāvadhapaṇa soḍum naye | vyāpakapaṇa sāmḍum naye | kadā sukha mānūm naye | nisugapaṇācem
Do not abandon alertness; do not abandon vastness; / do not feel sukha — in insensibility.
Do not abandon alertness (sāvadhapaṇa); do not abandon expansiveness of mind (vyāpakapaṇa); and do not ever mistake dull insensibility (nisugapaṇa) for genuine peace (sukha).
If you notice yourself going numb to avoid difficult feelings, recognize that as avoidance, not equanimity, and re-engage.

vikalpa poṭīm dharūm naye | svārthaājñā karūm naye | kelī tarī ṭākūm naye | āpaṇāsa puḍhem
Do not hold vikalpa in belly; do not do a selfish command; / if done, do not leave it — for oneself ahead.
Do not carry indecision (vikalpa) in the belly; do not issue a command driven by self-interest (svārtha-ājñā); and if such a command has already been given, do not simply abandon it and leave the consequence for your future self to deal with.
If you already made a self-serving decision, own its consequences now rather than leaving the cleanup for later.

prasamgemvīṇa bolom naye | anvayemvīṇa gāūm naye | vicāremvīṇa jāūm naye | avicārapamthem
Do not speak without occasion; do not sing without anvaya; / do not go without vicāra — on the avicāra-path.
Do not speak without proper occasion; do not teach without proper logical connection (anvaya); and do not proceed without careful consideration (vicāra) down the path of thoughtlessness.
Before making an important statement, check that the moment and the reasoning actually support it, rather than speaking simply because you feel like it.
paropakāra sāmḍūm naye | parapīḍā karūmnaye | vikalpa paḍom deūm naye | koṇīyekāsī
Do not abandon benevolence; do not cause paropīḍa (others' suffering); / do not let vikalpa fall — on anyone.
Do not abandon benevolence toward others (paropakāra); do not cause suffering to others (parapīḍā); and do not let suspicion or doubt (vikalpa) fall on anyone unjustly.
Before you suspect someone of bad intent, look for the more generous explanation first.
neṇapaṇa soḍūm naye | mahamtapaṇa sāmḍūm naye | dravyāsāṭhīm himḍom naye | kīrtana karīta
Do not abandon nescience; do not abandon mahant-hood; / do not wander for money — while doing kīrtana.
Do not abandon a posture of not-knowing (neṇapaṇa, humility about one's own attainment); do not abandon your position of eldership (mahantpaṇa) — do not shirk the responsibility that comes with respect; and do not wander in search of money while performing devotional singing (kīrtana).
If you lead or teach, keep both your humility and your responsibility intact, and never let payment become the point of the service you offer.
samśayātmaka bolom naye | bahuta niścaye karūm naye | nirvāhemvīṇa dharūm naye | gramtha hātīm
Do not speak with doubt; do not hold much certainty; / do not hold a book in hand — without support.
Do not speak with doubt in your voice when you actually know; do not hold excessive certainty when you don't; and do not hold a scripture or book in hand without the proper grounding to use it (nirvāhemvīṇa).
Match your tone of confidence to your actual level of knowledge — don't hedge what you know or assert what you don't.

jāṇapaṇem pusom naye | ahambhāva disom naye | sāmgena aisem mhaṇom naye | koṇīyekāsī
Do not ask with knower-hood; do not let aham-bhāva appear; / do not say 'I will tell' — to anyone.
Do not ask questions while pretending to already know the answer; do not let the sense of ego (ahaṃbhāva) show; and do not promise anyone 'I will tell you' a teaching or secret you're not ready to deliver.
When you genuinely don't know something, ask plainly instead of performing false modesty or false expertise.

jñānagarva dharūm naye | sahasā chaḷaṇā karūm naye | koṭhem vāda ghālum naye | koṇīyekāsī
Do not hold jñāna-pride; do not quickly ridicule; / do not dispute — with anyone.
Do not hold pride in your own knowledge (jñānagarva); do not mock or ridicule people rashly; and do not enter into disputes with anyone.
Notice the impulse to correct or mock someone who says something wrong, and choose silence or gentle clarification instead.
svārthabuddhī jaḍom naye | kārabārīm paḍom naye | kāryakarte hoūm naye | rājadvārīm
Do not let self-interest stick; do not engage in affairs; / do not become an agent — at the royal-door.
Do not let self-interest (svārthabuddhī) take root; do not get entangled in worldly affairs and politics (kārabāra); and do not become an operator or agent at the royal court (rājadvārīṃ), a symbol of political power.
Stay out of workplace or community politics that would require you to compromise your own interest-free stance.

koṇāsa bharvasā deūm naye | jaḍa bhikṣā māgom naye | bhikṣesāthīm sāmgom naye | paramparā āpulī
Do not give trust to anyone; do not beg heavy alms; / do not tell for sake of alms — your lineage.
Do not give blind trust to anyone; do not beg for heavy, excessive alms; and do not reveal your own lineage or background merely to secure alms.
When asking for help, ask for only what you need, and don't leverage your background or credentials to get more.

Do not fall into marriage-arrangement; do not become an intermediary; / do not let household-upādhi — stick to body.
Do not get involved in arranging marriages; do not become an intermediary (madhyāvartī) in others' affairs; and do not let the entanglements of household life (prapañca) stick to your own person.
Decline invitations to broker or arbitrate other people's family or business matters — it's not your role to carry.

Do not go to a household-feast; do not eat superfluous food; / never take invitations — on guest-basis.
Do not go to household feasts (prapañcaprastī); do not eat superfluous, excessive food; and never accept invitations purely on the basis of being treated as a guest.
Decline social invitations that exist mainly to indulge you, and eat only what actual need requires when you do attend.

śrādha pakṣa saṭī sāmāsem | śāmtī phaḷaśobana bārasem | bhoga rāhāta bahuvasem | navasa vratem udyāpanem
Śrāddha, pakṣa, Saṭī-Sāmās; śānti, fruit-adornment, 12th-day [baby-naming]; / abundant feasts, vows, vrata-fulfillments —
A catalog of ritual and ceremonial occasions follows — funerary rites (śrāddha), calendrical observances, propitiatory rites (śānti), naming ceremonies, abundant feasts, vows and vow-fulfillments. Rāmdās lists these before stating, in the next verse, that the niṣpṛha should stay away from all of them.
Notice how many social or ceremonial obligations you attend mainly out of habit or fear of judgment, and decline the next one that doesn't serve your actual purpose.
tethem nispṛhem jāūm naye | tyācem anna khāūm naye | yeḷilavāṇem karūm naye | āpaṇāsī
— the niṣpṛha should not go there; not eat their food; / not become insignificant — oneself.
The niṣpṛha should not attend the occasions listed in 14.1.053, nor eat the food offered there, so as not to make himself cheap or insignificant (yeḷilavāṇeṃ) by being seen as available for every social ritual.
Protect your time and standing by declining events that exist to extract your presence rather than to serve a real purpose.
lagnamuhurtīm jāūm naye | poṭāsāṭhīm gāūm naye | molem kīrtana karūm naye | koṭhemtarī
Do not go to wedding-muhūrta; do not sing for the belly; / do not do kīrtana for pay — anywhere.
Do not attend wedding ceremonies (lagna-muhūrta); do not sing merely to fill your belly; and do not perform devotional singing (kīrtana) for pay, anywhere.
If you offer a skill or teaching, refuse to let it be reduced to a paid performance — keep it an offering, not a transaction.
āpalī bhikṣā soḍūm naye | vārem anna khāūm naye | nispṛhāsi ghaḍom naye | molayātrā
Do not abandon your alms; do not eat dedicated-food; / the niṣpṛha should not — take paid-pilgrimage.
Do not abandon your own humble, freely given alms in favor of better fare; do not eat food that has been specially dedicated or reserved for a ritual purpose; and the niṣpṛha should never undertake a paid pilgrimage (molayātrā).
Keep your daily sustenance simple and freely received rather than upgrading to whatever is offered on special occasions.
molem sukṛta karūm naye | molapujārī hoūm naye | dilhā tarī gheūm naye | ināma nispṛhem
Do not do paid sukṛta; do not be a paid priest; / even if given, do not accept — a grant, the niṣpṛha.
Do not perform meritorious acts (sukṛta) for pay; do not become a hired priest (mola-pujārī); and even if a grant or endowment (ināma) is offered, the niṣpṛha should not accept it.
If someone tries to pay you for something that should be a spiritual offering, decline the payment even if it's freely given.
koṭhem maṭha karūm naye | kelā tarī to dharūm naye | maṭhapatī hoūna baisom naye | nispṛha puruṣem
Do not build a maṭha anywhere; even if built, do not hold it; / do not sit as a maṭha-master — the niṣpṛha.
Do not build a monastery or hermitage (maṭha) anywhere; even if one is built, do not hold onto it; and the niṣpṛha should not sit as its master (maṭhapatī). Institution-building is treated as another form of entanglement to avoid.
If you're building something meant to outlast you — an institution, an organization — regularly ask whether you're serving it or it's serving your ego.
nispṛhem avaghemci karāvem | parī āpaṇa tethem na sāmpaḍāvem | parasparem ubhārāvem | bhaktimārgāsī
The niṣpṛha should do everything; but oneself should not be caught there. / Erect mutually — the bhakti-path.
The niṣpṛha should accomplish everything needed but should never let himself be personally caught up in the result. The devotional path (bhakti-mārga) should be built up mutually, through cooperation, not through any one person's self-importance.
Do the work fully, but let go of needing personal credit for the outcome — build things together rather than around yourself.
pretnemviṇa rāhom naye | āḷasa dṛṣṭī āṇūm naye | deha astām pāhom naye | viyoga upāsanecā
Do not stay without effort; do not bring laziness into sight; / while body exists, do not see — separation from upāsanā.
Do not remain without effort (pretna); do not let laziness enter your outlook; and while the body still lives, do not let a gap open up between yourself and your devotional practice (upāsanā).
Keep your daily spiritual or disciplined practice active without excuses, treating any lapse as urgent to correct while you still can.
upādhīmadhyem paḍom naye | upādhī āmgīm jaḍom naye | bhajanamārga moḍūm naye | nisamgaḷapaṇem
Do not fall into upādhi; do not let upādhi stick to body; / do not break the bhajana-path — by unattachment.
Do not fall into worldly entanglement (upādhi); do not let entanglement stick to your person; yet also do not let excessive unattachment (nisaṃgaḷapaṇeṃ) break your devotional practice (bhajana-mārga) either — extremes on both sides are warned against.
Notice if your effort to stay unattached has started to erode your actual practice, and correct toward moderate, sustained engagement.
bahu upādhī karūm naye | upādhīviṇa kāmā naye | saguṇabhakti soḍūm naye | vibhakti khoṭī
Do not do much upādhi; without upādhi is useless; / do not abandon saguṇa-bhakti — vi-bhakti (separated-bhakti) is false.
Do not take on much worldly entanglement — but functioning entirely without any is also useless. Do not abandon devotion to the personal, embodied Divine (saguṇa-bhakti): a supposedly 'separated' devotion (vibhakti) that avoids all form is false.
Don't let a taste for abstract, formless spirituality talk you out of a concrete daily devotional practice — keep both engagement and detachment in balance.
bahusāla dhāmvom naye | bahusāla sāhom naye | bahuta kaṣṭa karūm naye | asudem khoṭem
Do not run about much; do not bear much; / do not do much labour — lying-down is false.
The samāsa now runs through a series of matched extremes, each called 'false' (khoṭeṃ): do not run about excessively, do not bear excessive burdens, do not labor excessively — but idle lying-down is equally false. Neither frantic activity nor sheer indolence is the goal.
Notice whether you swing between overworking and collapsing into idleness, and aim instead for a steady, sustainable pace.
bahusāla bolom naye | abolaṇem kāmā naye | bahuta anna khāūm naye | upavāsa khoṭā
Do not speak much; not-speaking is useless; / do not eat much — fasting is false.
Do not speak excessively — but total silence is equally useless; do not eat too much — but fasting to excess is equally false. Moderation, not either extreme, is the standard.
Check whether your current eating or speaking habit has drifted to either extreme, and bring it back toward the moderate middle.
bahusāla nijom naye | bahuta nidrā moḍum naye | bahuta nema dharūm naye | bāśkaḷa khoṭem
Do not sleep much; do not break much sleep; / do not hold many vows — superfluity is false.
Do not sleep excessively; do not break sleep excessively through excessive vigils; do not bind yourself to too many vows — excess in any of these becomes mere superfluity (bāśkaḷa), which is false.
If you've taken on more self-imposed rules or restrictions than you can sustain, drop some rather than proudly maintaining an unsustainable pile.
bahu janīm asom naye | bahu āraṇya seūm naye | bahu deha pāḷūm naye | ātmahatyā khoṭī
Do not stay much among people; do not dwell much in forest; / do not nurture body much — ātma-hatyā is false.
Do not stay too much among people; do not dwell too much in the forest, in solitude; do not overindulge the body — but self-starvation as a form of self-destruction (ātmahatyā) is equally false.
Balance time in solitude with time in community, and never let ascetic discipline shade into self-harm.
bahu samga dharūm naye | samtasamga sāmḍum naye | karmaṭhapaṇa kāmā naye | anācāra khoṭā
Do not hold much association; do not abandon saint-company; / ritualism is not useful — impropriety is false.
Do not keep too much company indiscriminately — but do not abandon the company of saints (santasaṃga) either; rigid ritualism (karmaṭhapaṇa) is not useful, but impropriety (anācāra) is equally false.
Keep your circle small but don't cut yourself off from the mentors and companions who actually strengthen your practice.
bahu lokika sāmḍum naye | lokādhena hoūm naye | bahu prītī kāmā naye | niṣṭhuratā khoṭī
Do not abandon worldly much; do not become people-dependent; / much love is not useful — harshness is false.
Do not abandon ordinary worldly dealings entirely — but do not become dependent on people's opinions either; excessive affection is not useful, but harshness (niṣṭhuratā) is equally false.
Stay warm and engaged with people without needing their approval, and without hardening into coldness to protect yourself.
bahu samśaye dharūm naye | muktamārga kāmā naye | bahu sādhanīm paḍom naye | sādhanemvīṇa khoṭem
Do not hold much doubt; mukta-path is not useful; / do not fall into many sādhanas — without sādhana is false.
Do not hold excessive doubt — a supposed 'path of liberation' built on doubt is not useful; but do not jump between too many practices (sādhana) either — being without any practice at all is equally false.
Pick one sustained practice and stay with it, rather than doubting your way out of every method or restlessly switching between them.
bahu viṣaye bhogūm naye | viṣayatyāga karitām naye | dehalobha dharūm naye | bahu trāsa khoṭā
Do not enjoy many objects; object-renunciation does not come [directly]; / do not hold body-greed — much distress is false.
Do not indulge in sense-objects excessively — yet complete renunciation of them cannot simply be forced; do not hold excessive attachment to the body — but excessive self-torment is equally false.
Reduce indulgence gradually rather than demanding instant total renunciation of yourself, and stop treating self-punishment as virtue.
vegaḷā anubhava gheūm naye | anubhavemvīṇa kāmā naye | ātmasthitī bolom naye | stabdhatā khoṭī
Do not take separate anubhava; without anubhava is useless; / do not speak ātma-state — stability is false.
Do not seek some special, separate experience (anubhava) apart from the established teaching — yet without genuine experience nothing is useful; do not merely talk about the state of the Self (ātmasthiti) — claimed stillness without real ground is false.
Don't chase exotic spiritual experiences for their own sake, but also don't substitute talking about realization for actually living it.
mana urom deūm naye | manemvīṇa kāmā naye | alakṣa vastu lakṣā naye | lakṣemvīṇa khoṭem
Do not let mind remain; without mind is useless; / alakṣya-vastu cannot be targeted — without lakṣya is false.
Do not let the mind persist in confusion or attachment — yet without a functioning mind nothing works; the unseeable Reality (alakṣya vastu) cannot be directly targeted — yet without some point of focus (lakṣya), the effort is false.
Use ordinary focused attention as your working tool even while aiming at something beyond ordinary grasp — don't discard the tool while reaching for the goal.
manabuddhiagocara | buddhīvīṇa amdhakāra | jāṇīvecā paḍo visara | neṇīva khoṭī
Manas-buddhi-inaccessible; without buddhi is darkness; / do not let knowing-ness be forgotten — not-knowing is false.
That Reality is beyond mind and intellect (manabuddhi-agocara); yet without intellect (buddhi) there is only darkness. Do not let your sense of awareness (jāṇīva) lapse into forgetfulness — willful not-knowing used as an excuse is false.
Use your intellect fully as a stepping stone rather than pretending ignorance is itself a spiritual attainment.
jñātepaṇa dharūm naye | jñānemvīṇa kāmā naye | atarkya vastu tarkā na ye | tarkemvīṇa khoṭem
Do not hold knower-ness; without jñāna is useless; / atarkya-vastu comes not to tarka — without tarka is false.
Do not hold onto the identity of 'the one who knows' (jñātepaṇa) — yet without knowledge (jñāna) nothing is useful; the Reality beyond reasoning (atarkya vastu) cannot be reached by logic — yet without logic as preparatory discipline, the effort is false.
Study and reason carefully as far as they can take you, then be willing to set aside the identity of 'expert' at the point where reasoning runs out.
dṛśyasmaraṇa kāma naye | vismaraṇa paḍom naye | kāmhīm carcā karūm naye | keliyāvīṇa na cale
Do not remember dṛśya; do not let it be forgotten; / do not do some discussion — without doing it does not proceed.
Do not dwell on remembering the visible world (dṛśya) — yet do not let it be forgotten either; do not engage in idle discussion — yet without actually doing the inquiry, nothing proceeds.
Balance withdrawing attention from worldly concerns with staying practically engaged enough to actually do the inner work required.
jagīm bheda kāmā naye | varṇasamkara karūm naye | āpalā dharma uḍaūm naye | abhimāna khoṭā
In the world, bheda is not useful; do not do varṇa-sankara; / do not fly off your own dharma — pride is false.
In the world, creating division (bheda) is not useful; do not mix roles and duties improperly (varṇasaṃkara); and do not fly off from your own proper duty (dharma) — such pride is false.
Stay faithful to your own responsibilities rather than abandoning them out of pride or restlessness, even while treating others without division.
āśābaddhata bolom naye | vivekemvīṇa cālom naye | samādhāna hālom naye | kāmhīm kelyām
Do not speak greed-bound; do not walk without vivek; / samādhāna should not shake — no matter what.
Do not speak while bound by greed or craving (āśābaddhata); do not act without discernment (viveka); and no matter what happens, your inner settledness (samādhāna) should never waver.
Before speaking from a place of wanting something, pause until you can speak from a settled, undistorted place instead.

abaddha pothī lehom naye | pothīvīṇa kāmā naye | abaddha vācūm naye | vācilyāvīṇa khoṭem
Do not write a disorderly book; without book is useless; / do not read disorderly — without reading is false.
Do not write a disorderly, careless text (abaddha pothī) — yet without a well-grounded written teaching, nothing is useful; do not read carelessly — yet without reading, the effort is false. Study and composition both require discipline, but neither can be skipped.
If you're documenting or teaching something, hold yourself to careful, well-grounded writing rather than either sloppy production or avoiding writing altogether.

nispṛhem vagatrutva sāmḍūm naye | āśamkā ghetām bhāmḍom naye | śrotayāmcā mānūm naye | vīṭa kadā
Do not abandon eloquence for the niṣpṛha; when objection is raised, do not quarrel; / do not take listeners' fatigue — ever.
The niṣpṛha should not abandon eloquence and the capacity to speak well (vāgatrutva); when an objection is raised, do not quarrel over it; and never regard your listeners with weariness or disgust (vīṭa), no matter how many times you must explain.
The next time you're asked the same question again, answer with the same patience as the first time rather than showing irritation.

hem sikavaṇa dharitām cittīm | sakaḷa sukhem voḷagatī | āmgīm bāṇem mahamtī | akasmāta
Holding this teaching in citta, all sukhas flow to [one]; / mahantī is impressed on the body — suddenly.
The samāsa closes: holding this whole teaching firmly in the heart-mind (chitta), every form of ease comes naturally to that person; true greatness (mahantī) becomes impressed upon them suddenly, unforced. This is the payoff promised back in 14.1.001-003 — the 'word-medicine' actually works.
Pick two or three items from this entire list that you most need, keep them in mind daily, and trust that consistency, not force, will bring the change.
