मागां हरिकथेचें लक्षण । श्रोतीं केला होता प्रस्न ।
सावध होऊन विचक्षण । परिसोन आतां
māgām harikathecem lakṣaṇa | śrotīm kelā hotā prasna |
sāvadha hoūna vicakṣaṇa | parisona ātām

हरिकथा कैसी करावी । रंगें कैसी भरावी ।
जेणें पाविजे पदवी । रघुनाथकृपेची
harikathā kaisī karāvī | ramgem kaisī bharāvī |
jeṇem pāvije padavī | raghunāthakṛpecī
How should hari-kathā be done? How should it be filled with color? / By which is obtained the rank — of Raghunātha's grace.
सोनें आणि परिमळे । युक्षदंडा लागती फळें ।
गौल्य माधुर्य रसाळें । तरी ते अपूर्वता
sonem āṇi parimaḷe | yukṣadamḍā lāgatī phaḷem |
gaulya mādhurya rasāḷem | tarī te apūrvatā
Gold and fragrance; sugarcane bears fruits; / sweetness, honey, juiciness — this is wondrous.
तैसा हरिदास आणि विरक्त । ज्ञाता आणि प्रेमळ भक्त ।
वित्पन्न आणि वादरहित । तरी हेहि अपूर्वता
taisā haridāsa āṇi virakta | jñātā āṇi premaḷa bhakta |
vitpanna āṇi vādarahita | tarī hehi apūrvatā
Likewise haridāsa and virakta; jñātā and loving bhakta; / learned and dispute-free — this too is wondrous.
रागज्ञानी ताळज्ञानी । सकळकळा ब्रह्मज्ञानी ।
निराभिमानें वर्ते जनीं । तरी हेहि अपूर्वता
rāgajñānī tāḷajñānī | sakaḷakaḷā brahmajñānī |
nirābhimānem varte janīm | tarī hehi apūrvatā
Rāga-jñānī, tāḷa-jñānī; all-art-brahmajñānī; / without pride moves among people — this too is wondrous.
मछर नाहीं जयासी । जो अत्यंत प्रिये सज्जनासी ।
चतुरांग जाणें मानसीं । अंतरनिष्ठ
machara nāhīm jayāsī | jo atyamta priye sajjanāsī |
caturāmga jāṇem mānasīm | amtaraniṣṭha
He who has no jealousy, who is extremely dear to sajjanas; / knows four-limbed-art in mind — antara-niṣṭha.
जयंत्यादिकें नाना पर्वें । तीर्थें क्षेत्रें जें अपूर्वें ।
जेथें वसिजे देवाधिदेवें । सामर्थ्यरूपें
jayamtyādikem nānā parvem | tīrthem kṣetrem jem apūrvem |
jethem vasije devādhidevem | sāmarthyarūpem
Jayantī and various festivals; various tīrthas, kṣetras that are wondrous; / where the Devādhi-deva dwells — in power-form.
तया तिर्थातें जे न मानिती । शब्दज्ञानें मिथ्या म्हणती ।
तया पामरां श्रीपती । जोडेल कैंचा
tayā tirthātem je na mānitī | śabdajñānem mithyā mhaṇatī |
tayā pāmarām śrīpatī | joḍela kaimcā
Those who do not accept such tīrthas; by word-jñāna call [them] false; / to such wretches Śrīpati — whence would he come?
निर्गुण नेलें संदेहानें । सगुण नेलें ब्रह्मज्ञानें ।
दोहिकडे अभिमानें । वोस केलें
nirguṇa nelem samdehānem | saguṇa nelem brahmajñānem |
dohikaḍe abhimānem | vosa kelem
Nirguṇa was taken by doubt; saguṇa was taken by brahma-jñāna; / on both sides by pride — was made desolate.
पुढें असतां सगुणमूर्ती । निर्गुणकथा जे करिती ।
प्रतिपादून उछेदिती । तेचि पढतमूर्ख
puḍhem asatām saguṇamūrtī | nirguṇakathā je karitī |
pratipādūna ucheditī | teci paḍhatamūrkha
While saguṇa-mūrti is before, those who recite nirguṇa-kathā; / expounding and extirpating — they are the paḍhat-mūrkhas.
ऐसी न कीजे हरिकथा । अंतर पडे उभये पंथा ।
परिस लक्षणें आतां । हरिकथेचीं
aisī na kīje harikathā | amtara paḍe ubhaye pamthā |
parisa lakṣaṇem ātām | harikathecīm
Do not do hari-kathā thus; the interior falls on both paths. / Hear now the marks — of hari-kathā.
सगुणमूर्तीपुढें भावें । करुणाकीर्तन करावें ।
नानाध्यानें वर्णावें । प्रतापकीर्तीतें । १२ ॥
ऐसें गातां स्वभावें । रसाळ कथा वोढवे ।
सर्वांतरीं हेलावे । प्रेमसुख
saguṇamūrtīpuḍhem bhāvem | karuṇākīrtana karāvem |
nānādhyānem varṇāvem | pratāpakīrtītem | 12 ||
aisem gātām svabhāvem | rasāḷa kathā voḍhave |
sarvāmtarīm helāve | premasukha
Before the saguṇa-mūrti, with bhāva — karuṇā-kīrtana should be done. / Various dhyānas described — of pratāpa-kīrti. / On such singing by svabhāva — juicy kathā flows; / in every heart is stirred — prema-sukha.
कथा रचायाची खूण । सगुणीं नाणावें निर्गुण ।
न बोलावे दोष गुण । पुढिलांचे कदा
kathā racāyācī khūṇa | saguṇīm nāṇāvem nirguṇa |
na bolāve doṣa guṇa | puḍhilāmce kadā
The secret of composing kathā — do not bring nirguṇa into saguṇa. / Do not speak faults or virtues — of others, ever.
देवाचें वर्णावें वैभाव । नाना प्रकारें महत्त्व ।
सगुणीं ठेउनियां भाव । हरिकथा करावी
devācem varṇāvem vaibhāva | nānā prakārem mahattva |
saguṇīm ṭheuniyām bhāva | harikathā karāvī
Describe Deva's vaibhava; various kinds of greatness. / Placing bhāva in saguṇa — hari-kathā should be done.
लाज सांडून जनाची । आस्था सांडून धनाची ।
नीच नवी कीर्तनाची । आवडी धरावी
lāja sāmḍūna janācī | āsthā sāmḍūna dhanācī |
nīca navī kīrtanācī | āvaḍī dharāvī
Abandoning shame of people, abandoning longing for wealth; / hold ever-fresh love — for kīrtana.
नम्र होऊन राजांगणीं । निःशंक जावें लोटांगणी ।
करताळिका नृत्य वाणीं । नामघोषें गर्जावें
namra hoūna rājāmgaṇīm | niḥśamka jāvem loṭāmgaṇī |
karatāḷikā nṛtya vāṇīm | nāmaghoṣem garjāvem
Humble at the royal court; fearlessly prostrate; / clap-dance in speech — roar with Name-chant.
येकांची कीर्ति येकापुढें । वर्णितां साहित्य न पडे ।
म्हणोनियां निवाडे । जेथील तेथें
yekāmcī kīrti yekāpuḍhem | varṇitām sāhitya na paḍe |
mhaṇoniyām nivāḍe | jethīla tethem
Describing one's kīrti before another — does not fit [as] literature. / Therefore separate judgements — where they belong.
मूर्ती नस्तां सगुण । श्रवणीं बैसले साधुजन ।
तरी अद्वैतनिरूपण । अवश्य करावें
mūrtī nastām saguṇa | śravaṇīm baisale sādhujana |
tarī advaitanirūpaṇa | avaśya karāvem
When saguṇa-mūrti is not present, but sādhus are in the audience — / then advaita-nirūpaṇa — should necessarily be done.
नाहीं मूर्ती नाहीं सज्जन । श्रवणीं बैसले भाविक जन ।
तरी करावें कीर्तन । प्रस्ताविक वैराग्य
nāhīm mūrtī nāhīm sajjana | śravaṇīm baisale bhāvika jana |
tarī karāvem kīrtana | prastāvika vairāgya
No image, no sajjana — but faithful people are in the audience; / then do kīrtana — of occasional vairāgya.
श्रुंघारिक नवरसिक । यामधें सांडावें येक ।
स्त्रियादिकांचें कौतुक । वर्णुं नये कीं
śrumghārika navarasika | yāmadhem sāmḍāvem yeka |
striyādikāmcem kautuka | varṇum naye kīm
Amorous, nine-flavor — in these, one should be dropped: / the delight of women etc. — should not be described.
लावण्य स्त्रियांचें वर्णितां । विकार बाधिजे तत्वता ।
धारिष्टापासून श्रोता । चळे तत्काळ
lāvaṇya striyāmcem varṇitām | vikāra bādhije tatvatā |
dhāriṣṭāpāsūna śrotā | caḷe tatkāḷa
Describing the beauty of women — vikāra truly afflicts. / The listener falls from resolve — at once.
म्हणऊन तें तजावें । जें बाधक साधकां स्वभावें ।
घेतां अंतरीं ठसावें । ध्यान स्त्रियांचें
mhaṇaūna tem tajāvem | jem bādhaka sādhakām svabhāvem |
ghetām amtarīm ṭhasāvem | dhyāna striyāmcem
Therefore abandon what — by svabhāva harms sādhakas. / On taking, gets impressed within — the dhyāna of women.
लावण्य स्त्रियांचें ध्यान । कामाकार जालें मन ।
कैचें आठवेल ध्यान । ईश्वराचें
lāvaṇya striyāmcem dhyāna | kāmākāra jālem mana |
kaicem āṭhavela dhyāna | īśvarācem
The dhyāna of women's beauty — mind became kāma-form; / whence will dhyāna be remembered — of Īśvara?
स्त्री वर्णितां सुखावला । लावण्याचे भरीं भरला ।
तो स्वयें जाणावा चेवला । ईश्वरापासुनी
strī varṇitām sukhāvalā | lāvaṇyāce bharīm bharalā |
to svayem jāṇāvā cevalā | īśvarāpāsunī
Describing women, he enjoyed; got absorbed in beauty's flow. / He himself is known as fallen — from Īśvara.
हरिकथेसी भावबळें । गेला रंग तो तुंबळे ।
निमिष्य येक जरी आकळे । ध्यानीं परमात्मा
harikathesī bhāvabaḷem | gelā ramga to tumbaḷe |
nimiṣya yeka jarī ākaḷe | dhyānīm paramātmā
In hari-kathā, by bhāva-strength — the color that went is turbulent. / Even for an instant if one grasps — Paramātmā in dhyāna.
ध्यानीं गुंतलें मन । कैचें आठवेल जन ।
निशंक निर्ल्लज कीर्तन । करितां रंग माजे
dhyānīm gumtalem mana | kaicem āṭhavela jana |
niśamka nirllaja kīrtana | karitām ramga māje
Mind engaged in dhyāna — whence would people be remembered? / Fearless, shameless kīrtana — color grows.
रागज्ञान ताळज्ञान । स्वरज्ञानेंसीं वित्पन्न ।
अर्थान्वयाचें कीर्तन । करूं जाणे
rāgajñāna tāḷajñāna | svarajñānemsīm vitpanna |
arthānvayācem kīrtana | karūm jāṇe
Rāga-jñāna, tāḷa-jñāna, learned in svara-jñāna; / kīrtana of meaning-anvaya — he knows to do.
छपन्न भाषा नाना कळा । कंठमाधुर्य कोकिळा ।
परी तो भक्तिमार्ग वेगळा । भक्त जाणती
chapanna bhāṣā nānā kaḷā | kamṭhamādhurya kokiḷā |
parī to bhaktimārga vegaḷā | bhakta jāṇatī
56 languages, various arts; cuckoo-like throat-sweetness; / but the bhakti-path is separate — bhaktas know.
भक्तांस देवाचें ध्यान । देवावांचून नेणें अन्न ।
कळावंतांचें जें मन । तें कळाकार जालें
bhaktāmsa devācem dhyāna | devāvāmcūna neṇem anna |
kaḷāvamtāmcem jem mana | tem kaḷākāra jālem
For bhaktas, the dhyāna of Deva; without Deva they know no food. / Art-experts' mind — has become art-shaped.
श्रीहरिवीण जे कळा । तेचि जाणावी अवकळा ।
देवास सांडून वेगळा । प्रत्यक्ष पडिला
śrīharivīṇa je kaḷā | teci jāṇāvī avakaḷā |
devāsa sāmḍūna vegaḷā | pratyakṣa paḍilā
The art without Śrī Hari — is known as the 'untimely-art.' / Leaving Deva apart — directly fallen.
सर्पीं वेढिलें चंदनासी । निधानाआड विवसी ।
नाना कळा देवासी । आड तैस्या
sarpīm veḍhilem camdanāsī | nidhānāāḍa vivasī |
nānā kaḷā devāsī | āḍa taisyā
Serpent encircled the sandal-tree; skeleton in front of the treasure; / various arts obstruct Deva — likewise.
सांडून देव सर्वज्ञ । नादामध्यें व्हावें मग्न ।
तें प्रत्यक्ष विघ्न । आडवें आलें
sāmḍūna deva sarvajña | nādāmadhyem vhāvem magna |
tem pratyakṣa vighna | āḍavem ālem
Leaving the all-knowing Deva; becoming absorbed in the nāda — / that itself is directly an obstacle — comes in the way.
येक मन गुंतलें स्वरीं । कोणें चिंतावा श्रीहरी ।
बळेंचि धरुनियां चोरीं । शुश्रृषा घेतली
yeka mana gumtalem svarīm | koṇem cimtāvā śrīharī |
baḷemci dharuniyām corīm | śuśrṛṣā ghetalī
One's mind is entangled in svara; who will contemplate Śrī Hari? / By force in secret — service was taken.
करितां देवाचें दर्शन । आडवें आलें रागज्ञान ।
तेणें धरुनियां मन । स्वरामागें नेलें
karitām devācem darśana | āḍavem ālem rāgajñāna |
teṇem dharuniyām mana | svarāmāgem nelem
On doing the Deva's darśana, rāga-jñāna comes in the way; / by that, holding the mind — it was led behind the svara.
भेटों जातां राजद्वारीं । बळेंचि धरिला बेगारी ।
कळावंतां तैसी परी । कळेनें केली
bheṭom jātām rājadvārīm | baḷemci dharilā begārī |
kaḷāvamtām taisī parī | kaḷenem kelī
Going to meet at the royal door, by force was made a bonded-laborer; / likewise — kalā has done — for the kalā-vants.
मन ठेऊन ईश्वरीं । जो कोणी हरिकथा करी ।
तोचि ये संसारीं । धन्य जाणा
mana ṭheūna īśvarīm | jo koṇī harikathā karī |
toci ye samsārīm | dhanya jāṇā
Placing mind on Īśvara — whoever does hari-kathā — / he alone in this samsāra — is blessed, know.
जयास हरिकथेची गोडी । उठे नीच नवी आवडी ।
तयास जोडली जोडी । सर्वोत्तमाची
jayāsa harikathecī goḍī | uṭhe nīca navī āvaḍī |
tayāsa joḍalī joḍī | sarvottamācī
Whoever has a taste for hari-kathā — for whom fresh love arises — / he has gained — the Sarvottama.
हरिकथा मांडली जेथें । सर्व सांडून धावे तेथें ।
आलस्य निद्रा दवडून स्वार्थें । हरिकथेसि सादर
harikathā māmḍalī jethem | sarva sāmḍūna dhāve tethem |
ālasya nidrā davaḍūna svārthem | harikathesi sādara
Where hari-kathā is set up — he leaves all and runs there. / Setting aside lazyness and sleep for svārtha — eager for hari-kathā.
हरिभक्तांचिये घरीं । नीच कृत्य अंगिकारी ।
साहेभूत सर्वांपरीं । साक्षपें होये
haribhaktāmciye gharīm | nīca kṛtya amgikārī |
sāhebhūta sarvāmparīm | sākṣapem hoye
At the houses of Hari-bhaktas — takes up lowly work; / becomes helpful in every way — by attention.
या नावाचा हरिदास । जयासि नामीं विश्वास ।
येथून हा समास । संपूर्ण जाला
yā nāvācā haridāsa | jayāsi nāmīm viśvāsa |
yethūna hā samāsa | sampūrṇa jālā
Such in name is the haridāsa — whose faith is in the Name. / From here this samāsa — is complete.
