tuja namūm gajavadanā | tujhā mahimā kaḷenā |
vidyā buddhi desī janā | lāhānathorāmsī
We salute you, elephant-faced (Gaṇeśa); your mahimā is not known; / you give vidyā, buddhi to people — small and great.
Opening salutation to Gaṇeśa, whose greatness is beyond full understanding — he is the one who grants learning and intelligence to people of every age. This samāsa will move through many named deities before revealing what they all point to.
Begin any serious undertaking by acknowledging what you do not yet understand, rather than assuming you already have full clarity.
tuja namūm sarasvatī | cyārī vācā tujhena sphūrtī |
tujhem nijarūpa jāṇatī | aise thoḍe
We salute Sarasvatī; by your inspiration, the four speeches; / those who know your own-form — are few.
Salutation to Sarasvatī, by whose inspiration the four levels of speech arise, from subtlest thought to spoken word; very few actually know her true nature behind the everyday language they use.
Notice how much of your speech runs on autopilot, and occasionally pause to ask what is actually behind the words you use.
dhanya dhanya caturānanā | tām kelī sṛṣṭīracanā |
veda śāstrem bheda nānā | pragaṭa kele
Blessed is Caturānana (four-faced Brahmā); you made the sṛṣṭi-rachanā; / Vedas, śāstras, various divisions — you manifested.
Praise to Brahmā (Caturānana), who designed the structure of creation and brought forth the Vedas, śāstras, and their many divisions of knowledge — the architect behind the world's order.
Respect the underlying structure and order in your life and work rather than treating it as arbitrary or accidental.
dhanya viṣṇu pāḷaṇa karisī | yekāmśem sakaḷa jīvāmsī |
vāḍhavisī vartavisī | jāṇajāṇom
Blessed is Viṣṇu, you nourish; with one portion all jīvas; / grow-and-operate — knowing, knowing.
Praise to Viṣṇu, who sustains and nourishes every living being with a single portion of himself, growing and guiding all things with full awareness.
In caring for others, act with full awareness rather than distracted routine — sustained attention is the real form of care.
dhanya dhanya bhūḷāśamkara | jayācyā deṇyāsa nāhīm pāra |
rāmanāma niramtara | japata āhe
Blessed is innocent Śankara; whose giving has no limit; / Rāma-nāma continuously — he chants.
Praise to the guileless Śaṅkara, whose generosity has no limit, and who himself continuously chants Rāma's name — even the great god is shown as a devotee, humbling any sense of self-sufficiency.
However accomplished you become, keep some practice of humble devotion or gratitude that reminds you nothing is entirely self-made.
dhanya dhanya imdradeva | sakaḷa devāmcāhi deva |
imdralokīmcem vaibhava | kāye mhaṇauni sāmgāvem
Blessed is Indra-deva; deva of all devas; / the vaibhava of Indra-loka — how to tell?
Praise to Indra, sovereign among the gods, whose heavenly splendor cannot adequately be described in words.
When describing something genuinely extraordinary, resist the urge to flatten it with clichés — let its scale humble your language.
dhanya dhanya yemadharma | sakaḷa jāṇatī dharmādharma |
prāṇīmātrācem varma | ṭhāīm pāḍitī
Blessed is Yama-dharma; all know dharma-adharma; / every creature's secret — they place at site.
Praise to Yama-dharma, who knows the full difference between right and wrong action and discerns the essential truth (varma) of every creature precisely.
Hold yourself to the standard of knowing the real difference between right and wrong in your own conduct, not just its outward appearance.
vemkaṭemsīm mahimā kitī | bhale ubhyām anna khātī |
vaḍe dhiraḍīm svāda ghetī | ātaḷasa āpālāmcā
Of Venkateśa — how great the mahimā! Fine ones standing eat food; / vaḍās, dhirdās savor — the taste of the rustics.
At Veṅkateśa's shrine, even refined, high-status devotees eat standing in the crowd, humbly; the simple foods offered there — vaḍās and dhirḍīs — carry the taste of ordinary people's devotion. Greatness here levels social rank.
Let devotion or shared purpose dissolve status differences in your own gatherings rather than reinforcing them.
dhanya tūm vo banaśamkarī | udamḍa śākhāmciyā hārī |
vivaravivarom bhojana karī | aisā kaimcā
Blessed are you, Banaśankarī; an abundant array of greens; / examining-examining one takes meal — such rare.
Praise to Banaśankarī, abundant with offerings of many kinds of greens; rare is the devotee who eats only after careful, discriminating examination — most simply partake without such attention.
Bring the same careful discrimination to what you consume and accept in daily life as you would to a sacred offering.
dhanya bhīma golāmguḷā | koravaḍyāmcyā udamḍa māḷā |
dahi vaḍe khātām sakaḷām | samādhāna hoye
Blessed Bhīma Goḷānguḷā; abundant garlands of kora-vaḍās; / eating dahī-vaḍās, for all — samādhāna arises.
Praise to Bhīma Golāṅguḷā, whose festival brings abundant garlands of fried offerings; eating dahī-vaḍā together, everyone present finds contentment (samādhāna) — communal, joyful worship.
Value the simple contentment of shared meals and communal celebration as a real form of spiritual nourishment.
dhanya tūm khamḍerāyā | bhamḍārem hoye pimvaḷī kāyā |
kāmdebharīta roṭage khāyā | siddha hotī
Blessed are you, Khaṇḍerāya; by bhaṇḍāra (turmeric) the body becomes yellow; / onion-stuffed rotgas for eating — are made ready.
Praise to Khaṇḍerāya, whose devotees turn their bodies yellow with turmeric (bhaṇḍāra) in ritual, and prepare onion-stuffed flatbreads for the feast — vivid folk devotion, concrete and physical.
Let your devotion or discipline show up in concrete, physical acts, not only in private feeling.
dhanya tuḷajābhovānī | bhaktām prasanna hote janīm |
guṇavaibhavāsa gaṇī | aisā kaimcā
Blessed Tulajā-Bhavānī; to bhaktas becomes pleased; / her wealth-of-virtues — who would count?
Praise to Tuḷajā-Bhavānī, who is pleased with her devotees among the people; the extent of her virtues and splendor is beyond anyone's power to count.
Do not try to fully catalog or measure what genuinely moves or sustains you — some things are better received than tallied.
dhanya dhanya pāmḍuramga | akhamḍa kathecā hoto dhimga |
tānamānem rāgaramga | nānā prakārīm
Blessed is Pāṇḍuranga; unbroken kathā-tumult; / rhythms, rāga-rāgas — in various kinds.
Praise to Pāṇḍuraṅga (Viṭṭhal of Paṇḍharpūr), where the unbroken tumult of sacred storytelling and song continues, with rhythms and rāgas of every kind — devotional life as constant, joyful noise.
Make room in your routine for sustained, communal expressions of joy, not only quiet solitary practice.
dhanya tūm gā kṣatrapāḷā | udamḍa janā lāvilā cāḷā |
bhāvem bhakti karitām phaḷā | veḷa nāhīm
Blessed are you, Kṣatra-pāla; engaged people in much play; / with bhāva-bhakti, fruition — takes no time.
Praise to Kṣetrapāla, who has drawn countless people into devoted engagement; when devotion is offered with real feeling (bhāva-bhakti), its fruit arrives without delay.
Act with genuine feeling rather than mechanical routine, since sincerity — not time spent — is what actually bears results.
rāmakṛṣṇādika avatāra | tyāmcā mahimā apāra |
upāsanesa bahuta nara | tatpara jāle
Rāma-Kṛṣṇa etc. avatāras — their mahimā is boundless; / many men became eager — in upāsanā.
The avatāras beginning with Rāma and Kṛṣṇa carry boundless glory, and many people have become deeply engaged in devoted practice (upāsanā) toward them.
Find a concrete figure or practice that genuinely engages your devotion rather than staying abstract about your aspirations.
sakaḷa devāmce mūḷa | to hā amtarātmāci kevaḷa |
bhūmamḍaḷīm bhoga sakaḷa | tyāsīca ghaḍe
The root of all devas — is this Antarātmā alone. / All enjoyments on earth-globe — fall only to him.
The pivot: the root of every deity named so far — Gaṇeśa, Sarasvatī, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śaṅkara and the rest — is this one Antarātmā, the indwelling Self, alone. All enjoyment across the earth belongs finally to that single one.
When you honor different traditions, teachers, or forms of practice, remember they point to one underlying reality rather than competing claims.
nānā deva hoūna baisalā | nānā śaktirūpem jālā |
bhoktā sakaḷa vaibhavālā | toci yeka
He has become various devas; has become various śakti-forms; / enjoyer of all vaibhava — is he alone.
That one Self has become the many gods; has taken the many forms of divine power (śakti); he alone is the enjoyer of all this variety and splendor described above.
Look for the underlying unity behind the many roles and identities you and others wear, rather than mistaking any single role for the whole person.
yācā pāhāvā vicāra | udamḍa lāmbalā jojāra |
hotī jātī deva nara | kitī mhaṇoni
Its consideration should be seen; the bookkeeping has stretched; / devas-and-men come-and-go — how many to tell?
This deserves real reflection: the tally of gods and people, endlessly appearing and disappearing, has grown far too long to count — a way of saying the multiplicity of forms is genuinely inexhaustible.
Stop trying to keep a complete mental inventory of every person, role, or possibility in your life — accept that some things exceed accounting.
kīrti āṇi apakīrti | udamḍa nimdā udamḍa stutī |
sarvatrāmcī bhogaprāptī | amtarātmyāsīca ghaḍe
Fame and disgrace; abundant slander, abundant praise; / the enjoyment-attainment of all — falls on the Antarātmā alone.
Fame and disgrace, abundant slander and abundant praise — all of it, in the end, is experienced only by the one Antarātmā, the same indwelling Self in everyone.
When praised or blamed, remember the same underlying awareness receives both — do not let either inflate or crush you disproportionately.
koṇa dehīm kāye karito | koṇa dehīm kāye bhogito |
bhogī tyāgī vītarāgī to | yekaci ātmā
In whose body, who does what; in whose body, who enjoys what; / enjoyer, renouncer, dispassionate — is the one Ātmā alone.
In whatever body someone acts or enjoys, the true actor and enjoyer — whether indulgent, renouncing, or dispassionate — is the one Ātmā alone appearing through each of them.
When judging someone's behavior, remember the same basic awareness underlies you both — let that temper harsh judgment.
prāṇī sābhimānem bhulale | dehyākaḍe pāhāta gele |
mukhya amtarātmyāsa cukalem | amtarīm asonī
Creatures deluded by self-pride — looked toward the body; / missed the chief Antarātmā — though within.
Deluded by self-pride and identification with the body, creatures look only outward toward physical form and miss the chief Antarātmā, even though it dwells within them the whole time.
Catch yourself when you define your worth purely by appearance or achievement, and redirect attention to what is actually aware within you.
āre yā ātmayācī caḷavaḷa pāhe | aisā bhūmamḍaḷīm koṇa āhe |
agādha puṇyem anusamdhāna rāhe | kāmhīmyeka
Who on earth-globe is there — that sees this Ātmā's motion? / By profound puṇya, anusandhāna — somewhat remains.
Who on this earth truly watches the Ātmā's subtle inner functioning? Only through deep merit does some capacity for sustained inward attention (anusandhāna) remain in a person.
Treat any capacity you have for sustained inward attention as valuable and rare — cultivate it deliberately rather than assuming it will just happen.
tyā anusamdhānāsarisem | jaḷonī jāīje kilmiṣem |
amtaraniṣṭha jñānī aise | vivarona pāhātī
With that anusandhāna — sins are burnt up; / antara-niṣṭha jñānīs like this — examine and see.
Through that sustained inward attention, accumulated faults are burnt away; those established within (antara-niṣṭha jñānīs) examine this for themselves and see it directly.
Use consistent inward reflection, not just willpower, as your actual tool for working through old faults and habits.
amtaraniṣṭha tituke tarale | amtarabhraṣṭa tituke buḍāle |
bāhyātkārem bharamgaḷale | lokācārem
All antara-niṣṭhas crossed; all antara-bhraṣṭas drowned; / externally stumbled — by folkway.
All who are established within cross over to liberation; all who are corrupted within drown; those who merely follow outward social convention stumble along without ever really arriving. This closes the samāsa's turn from the many external shrines to the one inward reality.
Do not settle for going through the outward motions of custom or convention — anchor your practice in genuine inward attention.
