ब्राह्मणें बाळबोध अक्षर । घडसुनी करावें सुंदर ।
जें देखतांचि चतुर । समाधान पावती
brāhmaṇem bāḷabodha akṣara | ghaḍasunī karāvem sumdara |
jem dekhatāmci catura | samādhāna pāvatī
A Brahmin should chiseled his bālabodh (beginner's) letters to be beautiful; / so that on seeing, the clever — attain samādhāna.
वाटोळें सरळें मोकळें । वोतलें मसीचें काळें ।
कुळकुळीत वळी चालिल्या ढाळें । मुक्तमाळा जैशा
vāṭoḷem saraḷem mokaḷem | votalem masīcem kāḷem |
kuḷakuḷīta vaḷī cālilyā ḍhāḷem | muktamāḷā jaiśā
Round, straight, clear; poured-in of masi (ink) black; / glossy lines flow in cadence — like pearl-garlands.
अक्षरमात्र तितुकें नीट । नेमस्त पैस काने नीट ।
आडव्या मात्रा त्या हि नीट । आर्कुलीं वेलांड्या
akṣaramātra titukem nīṭa | nemasta paisa kāne nīṭa |
āḍavyā mātrā tyā hi nīṭa | ārkulīm velāmḍyā
Every letter is proper; rigorously spaced; straight kānā (vertical strokes); / horizontal strokes also proper — hooks and flourishes.
पहिलें अक्षर जें काढिलें । ग्रंथ संपेतों पाहात गेलें ।
येका टांकेंचि लिहिलें । ऐसें वाटे
pahilem akṣara jem kāḍhilem | gramtha sampetom pāhāta gelem |
yekā ṭāmkemci lihilem | aisem vāṭe
The first letter that was drawn — until the grantha's end went seeing; / 'written by one nib' — so it seems.
अक्षराचें काळेपण । टांकाचें ठोसरपण ।
तैसेंचि वळण वांकाण । सारिखेंचि
akṣarācem kāḷepaṇa | ṭāmkācem ṭhosarapaṇa |
taisemci vaḷaṇa vāmkāṇa | sārikhemci
The letters' blackness, the nib's firmness; / likewise the curves-and-flourishes — all alike.
वोळीस वोळी लागेना । आर्कुली मात्रा भेदीना ।
खालिले वोळीस स्पर्शेना । अथवा लंबाकार
voḷīsa voḷī lāgenā | ārkulī mātrā bhedīnā |
khālile voḷīsa sparśenā | athavā lambākāra
Line does not touch line; hook does not pierce mātrā; / does not touch the line below — or become long.
पान शिषानें रेखाटावें । त्यावरी नेमकचि ल्याहावें ।
दुरी जवळी न व्हावें । अंतर वोळींचे
pāna śiṣānem rekhāṭāvem | tyāvarī nemakaci lyāhāvem |
durī javaḷī na vhāvem | amtara voḷīmce
The page should be ruled by pencil; on it write rigorously; / neither distant nor close — the space of lines.
कोठें शोधासी आडेना । चुकी पाहातां सांपडेना ।
गरज केली हें घडेना । लेखकापसुनी
koṭhem śodhāsī āḍenā | cukī pāhātām sāmpaḍenā |
garaja kelī hem ghaḍenā | lekhakāpasunī
Nowhere does examining stop; no mistake is found on looking; / no need made — of the scribe.
ज्याचें वय आहे नूतन । त्यानें ल्याहावें जपोन ।
जनासी पडे मोहन । ऐसें करावें
jyācem vaya āhe nūtana | tyānem lyāhāvem japona |
janāsī paḍe mohana | aisem karāvem
He whose age is new — should write carefully; / people should be enchanted — should be done so.
बहु बारिक तरुणपणीं । कामा नये म्हातारपणीं ।
मध्यस्त लिहिण्याची करणी । केली पाहिजे
bahu bārika taruṇapaṇīm | kāmā naye mhātārapaṇīm |
madhyasta lihiṇyācī karaṇī | kelī pāhije
Much tiny in youth — will not serve in old age; / middle-sized writing practice — must be done.
भोंवतें स्थळ सोडून द्यावें । मधेंचि चमचमित ल्याहावें ।
कागद झडतांहि झडावें । नलगेचि अक्षर
bhomvatem sthaḷa soḍūna dyāvem | madhemci camacamita lyāhāvem |
kāgada jhaḍatāmhi jhaḍāvem | nalageci akṣara
Leave space around; write in middle glittering; / even if paper bears lightning flash — the letters do not shine forth.
ऐसा ग्रंथ जपोनी ल्याहावा । प्राणी मात्रास उपजे हेवा ।
ऐसा पुरुष तो पाहावा । म्हणती लोक
aisā gramtha japonī lyāhāvā | prāṇī mātrāsa upaje hevā |
aisā puruṣa to pāhāvā | mhaṇatī loka
Such grantha carefully should be written; every creature's envy arises; / such a puruṣa should be seen — people say.
काया बहुत कष्टवावी । उत्कट कीर्ति उरवावी ।
चटक लाउनी सोडावी । कांहीं येक
kāyā bahuta kaṣṭavāvī | utkaṭa kīrti uravāvī |
caṭaka lāunī soḍāvī | kāmhīm yeka
Body should be labored much; excellent kīrti should be preserved; / engage [people], leave — something.
घट्य कागद आणावे । जपोन नेमस्त खळावे ।
लिहिण्याचे सामे असावे । नानापरी
ghaṭya kāgada āṇāve | japona nemasta khaḷāve |
lihiṇyāce sāme asāve | nānāparī
Firm paper should be brought; carefully rigorously held; / writing materials should be — various kinds.
सुर्या कातर्या जागाईत । खळी घोंटाळें तागाईत ।
नाना सुरंग मिश्रित । जाणोनि घ्यावें
suryā kātaryā jāgāīta | khaḷī ghomṭāḷem tāgāīta |
nānā suramga miśrita | jāṇoni ghyāvem
Knives, scissors well-kept; paste, resin, flax; / various excellent mixtures — should be known and taken.
नाना देसीचे बरु आणावे । घटी बारिक सरळे घ्यावे ।
नाना रंगाचे आणावे । नाना जिनसी
nānā desīce baru āṇāve | ghaṭī bārika saraḷe ghyāve |
nānā ramgāce āṇāve | nānā jinasī
Various reeds from various lands should be brought; well-formed, fine, straight; / of various colors brought — of various kinds.
नाना जिनसी टांकतोडणी । नाना प्रकारें रेखाटणी ।
चित्रविचित्र करणी । सिसेंलोळ्या
nānā jinasī ṭāmkatoḍaṇī | nānā prakārem rekhāṭaṇī |
citravicitra karaṇī | sisemloḷyā
Various kinds of nib-cutters; various ruling-instruments; / various designs, lead-metal rings — various.
हिंगुळ संग्रहीं असावे । वळले आळिते पाहोन घ्यावे ।
सोपें भिजौनी वाळवावे । संग्रह मसीचे
himguḷa samgrahīm asāve | vaḷale āḷite pāhona ghyāve |
sopem bhijaunī vāḷavāve | samgraha masīce
Cinnabar should be in stock; well-rubbed should be examined-and-taken; / easily wetted and dried — stock of masi.
तगटी इतिश्रया कराव्या । बंदरी फळ्या घोटाव्या ।
नाना चित्रीं चिताराव्या । उंच चित्रें
tagaṭī itiśrayā karāvyā | bamdarī phaḷyā ghoṭāvyā |
nānā citrīm citārāvyā | umca citrem
Border-plates, title-pages should be made; Bundi boards should be rubbed; / with various paintings painted — excellent art-works.
नाना गोप नाना बासनें । मेणकापडें सिंदुरवणें ।
पेट्या कुलुपें जपणें । पुस्तकाकारणें
nānā gopa nānā bāsanem | meṇakāpaḍem simduravaṇem |
peṭyā kulupem japaṇem | pustakākāraṇem
Various cloth-covers, various wrappings; wax-cloth, vermilion-dyed; / boxes, locks, careful watching — for the sake of books.
