jñānī āṇī udāsa | samudāyācā havyāsa |
teṇem akhamḍa sāvakāśa | yekāmta sevāvā
Jñānī and detached; zeal for community; / by him always leisurely — solitude should be served.
Even one settled in jnani wisdom and detachment, if drawn by zeal for leading a community, still needs unbroken access to solitude. Leadership does not cancel the need for a private, undistracted center; it makes that center more necessary.
However full your days managing others become, protect a fixed stretch of solitary time each day and treat it as non-negotiable.
jethem tajavījā kaḷatī | akhamḍa cāḷaṇā nighatī |
prāṇīmātrācī sthitī gatī | kaḷom yete
Where plans are known; unbroken siftings emerge; / the state-motion of every creature — comes to know.
Where a leader keeps up constant chalana (sifting, testing discernment), the real condition and movement of everyone around him becomes visible. This vigilance is what makes the counsel that follows possible — you cannot guide what you have not first read accurately.
Regularly and deliberately observe the people around you — their moods, motives, and shifts — rather than assuming you already know them.
jarī hā cāḷaṇāci karīnā | tarī kāmhīmca umajenā |
hisebajhāḍāci pāhīnā | divāḷakhora
If he does not do sifting — nothing is grasped; / does not examine account-list — bankrupt.
Skip that sifting and nothing is truly grasped; Ramdas compares the failure to a merchant who never checks his ledgers — bankrupt whether or not he yet knows it. Neglected discernment quietly ruins the whole undertaking.
Set a regular habit of honestly reviewing how your relationships and commitments actually stand, instead of trusting a vague impression.
yeka mirāsī sādhitī | yeka sīdhyā gavāvitī |
vyāpakapaṇācī sthitī | aisī āhe
Some accomplish hereditary-rights; some lose possessions; / the state of extensiveness — is such.
As a following widens, some gain standing and others lose their footing — that unevenness is simply what breadth of reach (vyapakata) brings. It is not proof that something has gone wrong; it is the ordinary cost of scale.
When your responsibilities grow, expect uneven outcomes among the people you lead, and do not read every setback as a personal failure.
jeṇem jem jem manīm dharilem | tem tem ādhīmca samajalem |
kṛtrima avaghemci khumṭalem | sahajaci yeṇem
What each holds in mind — is understood already; / cunning is all stopped — naturally by him.
A leader with real insight already senses what each person is holding in mind before they act on it, so their cunning has nowhere to land. Manipulation collapses on contact with genuine perceptiveness, as verse 2's constant sifting makes possible.
Pay close attention to what people actually intend before they speak or act; sharpened attention is itself a defense against being manipulated.
akhamḍa rāhatām salagī hote | atiparicayem avajñā ghaḍate |
yākāraṇem viśrāmtī te | ghetām naye
Always staying brings familiarity; by over-proximity, disregard occurs; / therefore that rest-time — should not be taken.
Constant closeness breeds familiarity, and familiarity, over-extended, breeds disrespect — so the counsel is against settling too comfortably into fixed ease with followers. Some distance has to be deliberately preserved for respect to hold.
Notice when a relationship has grown too casual to hold proper respect, and consciously restore some formality rather than letting it drift.
āḷasem āḷasa kelā | tarī maga kārabāraci buḍālā |
amtaraheta cukata gelā | samudāyācā
By laziness did laziness — then the work itself drowned; / inner-aim began to be missed — of the community.
Laziness answered with more laziness sinks the whole undertaking — once the leader slackens, the community's deeper purpose gets lost along with him. The tone set at the top spreads through everything below it.
Treat your own discipline as contagious: when you notice yourself slackening, correct it immediately, before the people around you follow suit.

udamḍa upāsanecīm kāmem | lāvīta jāvīm nityanemem |
avakāśa kaimcā kṛtrimem | karāvayāsī
Abundant tasks of upāsanā; should be applied by daily-rule; / whence time — for cunning?
Fill every day with abundant tasks of upasana (devoted practice) on a fixed schedule, so there is no leftover time in which cunning or intrigue could take root. A full, disciplined day is itself a safeguard.
Structure your day with enough purposeful practice and work that idle time — where scheming or gossip tends to breed — barely exists.
cora bhāmḍārī karāvā | ghasaratāmca sāmbhāḷāvā |
govā mūrkhapaṇācā kāḍhāvā | haḷu haḷu
Make a thief the store-keeper; at his slipping, take care; / remove the entanglement of foolishness — slowly.
Sometimes a flawed person — 'a thief' — must be placed in a position of responsibility; the counsel is not to avoid this but to watch closely, catch the first slip, and correct the fault gradually rather than harshly. Reform, not mere punishment, is the aim.
If you must rely on someone with a known weakness, supervise them closely and correct lapses gradually and privately, not through public confrontation.
yā avaghyā pahilyāca goṣṭī | prāṇī koṇī navhatā kaṣṭī |
rājakāraṇem mamḍaḷa veṣṭī | cahumkaḍe
All these are first things; no creature should be afflicted; / by rāja-kāraṇa wrap the circle — on all sides.
These first points are only the basics, meant to burden no one. From here the samasa turns to raja-karana proper — shrewd, strategic conduct that surrounds and protects the community on every side.
Master the basic discipline of attention and self-control first, before you attempt the harder work of managing conflict and difficult people.
naṣṭāsī naṣṭa yojāve | vācaḷāsī vācāḷa āṇāve |
āpaṇāvarī vikalpāce gove | paḍomca nedī
Deploy the wicked against the wicked; bring the wordy against the wordy; / do not let webs of vikalpa — fall on oneself.
Set the wicked against the wicked, and the merely talkative against the talkative, rather than confronting them directly — and never let webs of vikalpa (doubt, second-guessing) settle on yourself. Let opposing troublemakers cancel each other out while you stay clear.
When two difficult people clash, let their conflict run its course instead of stepping into the middle of it and absorbing the fallout yourself.

kāmṭīnem kāmṭī jhāḍāvī | jhāḍāvī parī te kaḷom nedāvī |
kaḷakaṭepaṇācī padavī | asom dyāvī
By thorn, shake off thorn; shake off, but do not let it be known; / the rank of being-an-entangler — keep aside.
'By thorn, remove thorn' — but do it so quietly it is never traced back to you; guard against ever being known as a schemer. This explains how verse 11's tactic is to be carried out: invisibly.
If you must use one problem to solve another, do it discreetly enough that you are never seen as the one pulling the strings.

Task done without being known — at once happens; / falling into muddle — by charm does not happen.
A task handled without fanfare or being noticed tends to resolve at once; a task that falls into public muddle is not saved by charm or personality. Quiet competence outperforms visible cleverness.
Handle sensitive problems quietly and directly rather than performing your effort in front of an audience.

aikonī āvaḍī lāgāvī | dekhonī baḷakaṭaci vhāvī |
salagīnem āpalī padavī | sevakāmadhem
Hearing, love should arise; seeing, strengthen; / by familiarity own rank — among servants.
Genuine affection should arise simply from hearing of the leader and be confirmed on seeing him; through that ordinary closeness his standing among those who serve him grows on its own. Authority built this way needs no forcing.
Earn trust and standing through consistent, genuine conduct rather than by asserting authority.
Some work on doing happens; without doing falls behind; / for this reason, looseness — should not be at all.
Work advances only when it is actually done and falls behind the moment it isn't — so there is no room anywhere for slackness. This sharpens the warning already given about laziness in verse 7.
Track whether things are actually getting done, not merely intended, and close any gap in follow-through immediately.
jo dusaryāvarī viśvāsalā | tyācā kāryabhāga buḍālā |
jo āpaṇaci kaṣṭata gelā | toci bhalā
He who trusts another — his work drowned; / he who labors himself — he is the good.
The one who leans entirely on another's word finds his work sunk; the one who labors himself is the one who truly prospers. Delegating tasks does not mean surrendering responsibility for the outcome.
Delegate tasks but keep personal responsibility for the outcome; do not let trust in others become an excuse to disengage.
avaghyāsa avaghem kaḷalem | tevhām tem ritem paḍilem |
yākāraṇem aisem ghaḍalem | na pāhije kīm
All came to know everything; then it fell empty; / for this reason, such — should not occur.
When absolutely everyone knows everything, the whole enterprise turns hollow — some things must remain undisclosed for it to hold together. This is why the discretion urged in verse 12 matters: total transparency is not the same as integrity.
Recognize that not every plan or difficulty needs to be shared with everyone; keep some matters appropriately private.

kitteka khalaka ugavāve | rājakāraṇāmadhem
Hold the main thread in hand; let the doing be done through people; / unravel several hassles — in rāja-kāraṇa.
Hold the main thread of direction yourself, but let the actual work be carried out through other people, unraveling the community's many tangles this way. This is the core discipline of good delegation: govern the direction, not every hand.
Keep the overall direction firmly in your own hands while delegating execution to capable people around you.
bolake pahilavāna kaḷakaṭe | tayāsīca ghyāve jhaṭe |
durjanem rājakāraṇa dāṭe | aisem na karāvem
Speaking champions-wrestlers-hardworking; with them take on struggles; / by wicked rāja-kāraṇa gets crammed — do not do thus.
Take up hard confrontations with strong, capable, hard-working people at your side — never let the wicked crowd and dominate the community's affairs by default. Weakness at the center invites exactly that takeover.
When facing a serious conflict, bring in your most capable and reliable people rather than facing it alone or with the wrong allies.
grāmaṇya varmīm sāmpaḍāvem | ragaḍūna pīṭhaci karāvem |
karūni māgutī sāmvarāvem | buḍaūm naye
Catch the rebel at his weak point; grind him to powder; / then again lift up — do not drown.
Catch a rebellious member at his weak point and press him hard, grinding down the resistance — but then lift him back up afterward; the aim is correction, not destruction. Discipline that only punishes and never restores fails its own purpose.
When you must discipline someone firmly, follow it with genuine restoration — do not leave the relationship broken once the correction is made.

khaḷadurjanāsī bhyālem | rājakāraṇa nāhīm rākhilem |
teṇem avaghem pragaṭa jālem | barem vāīṭa
Afraid of wicked-rogue; rāja-kāraṇa not preserved; / by that all became manifest — good-bad.
Fear of confronting a wicked person meant raja-karana was not properly maintained, and as a result everything — the good and the bad alike — spilled into the open. Avoidance does not contain damage; it exposes it.
Address a difficult conflict directly instead of avoiding it out of fear; avoidance tends to let the whole situation become visible and messy anyway.
samudāva pāhije moṭhā | tarī tanāvā asāvyā baḷakaṭā |
maṭha karunī tāṭhā | dharūm naye
For a community to be great — threads should be strong; / making a maṭha, stiffness — should not be held.
A community grows great only when its internal bonds are genuinely strong — yet in building an institution one must not hold onto rigid pride. Strength of cohesion and humility of manner have to coexist.
Build strong loyalty and cooperation among the people around you, but keep your own posture humble as the group grows.
Wicked creatures must be known; but should not be exposed; / better than sajjana call them — giving greatness.
The wicked must be recognized clearly, but not called out publicly — outwardly they should be treated with even more consideration than the virtuous receive, given standing rather than confrontation. Private discernment, public courtesy.
When you identify someone's bad conduct, keep that assessment private and handle them with outward courtesy rather than public shaming.

janāmadhem durjana pragaṭa | tarī maga akhamḍa khaṭakhaṭa |
yākāraṇem te vāṭa | bujhūni ṭākāvī
Wicked manifest among people — then unbroken trouble; / for this reason that path — should be buzzed off.
Once a wicked person is openly exposed among the people, unending trouble follows — so that route should be closed off before it starts. This is the reasoning behind the discretion urged in the previous verse.
Head off public exposure of someone's wrongdoing before it spirals into ongoing conflict; resolve it quietly first.
ganīmācyā dekhatām phaujā | raṇaśūrāmcyā phurphuritī bhujā |
aisā pāhije kim rājā | kaipakṣī paramārthī
Seeing enemy armies, the battle-heroes' arms quiver; / such should the king be — a side-taker, paramārthī.
At the sight of an enemy's army, true warriors' arms quiver with readiness — Ramdas says a leader devoted to paramartha (the highest end) should carry exactly that alertness, taking a clear side rather than remaining neutral. Spiritual seriousness includes real readiness to act.
When a real conflict or injustice appears, meet it with alert readiness rather than passive neutrality.
tayāsa dekhatām durjana dhāke | baisavī pracitīce taḍākhe |
bamḍapāṣāmḍāce vākhe | sahajaci hotī
On seeing him, wicked are afraid; sets pratīti-blows; / marks of rebellion-heresy — spontaneously occur.
At the very sight of such a leader, wicked people feel fear; his presence brings the shock of direct pratiti (lived confirmation), and false claims of rebellion or heresy dissolve on their own before him. Genuine authority does the disciplining almost without effort.
Build the kind of consistent, tested character that makes bad behavior around you lose its nerve on contact, rather than relying only on rules to enforce it.
he dhūrtapaṇācīm kāmem | rājakāraṇa karāvem nemem |
ḍhilepaṇācyā sambhramem | jāūm naye
These are tasks of cunning; rāja-kāraṇa should be done rigorously; / by the pomp of looseness — should not go.
All of this — matching troublemaker to troublemaker, quiet correction, careful discretion — is shrewd work, and it must be conducted with discipline, never carried out in the confused, showy manner of laxity. This closes the practical counsel before the final image of the hidden master.
Handle difficult people and situations with disciplined method, not with dramatic, careless improvisation.

koṭhemca paḍenā dṛṣṭīm | ṭhāīm ṭhāīm tyācyā goṣṭī |
vāgviḷāsem sakaḷa sṛṣṭī | vedhilī teṇem
Does not fall on sight; his accounts everywhere; / by speech-delight, all sṛṣṭi — is drawn by him.
Such a person is nowhere conspicuous to the eye, yet accounts of him are everywhere; by the sheer delight of his speech, the whole of creation is drawn toward him. True influence spreads through what is said and shared, not through display.
Let your influence travel through the quality of your words and conduct rather than through seeking visibility.

Set blusterer against blusterer; bring ṭoṇapā against ṭoṇapā; / before loaf stand another — loaf.
Set blusterer against blusterer, bully against bully, one big lout up against another — Ramdas returns to the tactic of verses 11-12: match troublemakers to their own kind so they neutralize each other.
When dealing with a domineering personality, it often helps to let them meet their equal rather than confronting them yourself.
dhaṭāsī āṇāvā dhaṭa | utdhaṭāsī pāhije utdhaṭa |
khaṭanaṭāsī khaṭanaṭa | agatya karī
Bring obstinate against obstinate; upstart for upstart; / rogue-rascal for rogue-rascal — necessarily is needed.
Obstinate against obstinate, upstart against upstart, rogue against rogue — this matching is not optional but necessary; it states as a general rule the tactic just given in specific examples.
Make it a standing principle, not a one-off trick, to pair difficult people with their own kind when conflict must be managed.

itukem hotem parī dhanī koṭhem | dṛṣṭīsa na paḍe
When like-meets-like — then the gathering flourishes. / So much happens, but the master — falls not on sight.
When like meets like, the encounter plays out fully and the gathering holds together — yet through it all, the true master, the one actually directing events, is nowhere to be seen. The samasa closes on its central image: real command is exercised invisibly.
Aim to achieve results through quiet arrangement and steady influence rather than needing visible credit for orchestrating them.
