Abhanga 293
This abhang names three traps that prevent sukha and protection:
The verse
Literal translation
English: If the māy-bāp are sarpiṇī or bōkā — in their company, the bāḷa does not reach sukha. Sandalwood-trident, gold-shackle — gives no sukha; fōḍī (breaks); destroys the prāṇa. Tuka says: abhimāna sends to naraka — even if there is jñāna, garva-tāṭha.

What it means
A bad-company-and-pride abhang. Three claims:
-
मायबापें जरी सर्पीण बोका — त्यांचे संगें सुखा न पवे बाळ — if parents are sarpiṇī-bōkā — child gets no sukha. The bad-company-image. Even parents (= the closest-natural-bond) — if they are sarpiṇī-bōkā (predator-types) — the child gets no sukha in their company. The natural-bond does not protect against bad-company. (Sarpiṇī — female-serpent; bōkā — tom-cat — both predator-images. The point: some natural-bond-relations are predatory, not nurturing.)
-
चंदनाचा शूळ सोनियाची बेडी — सुख नेदी फोडी प्राण नाशी — sandalwood-trident, gold-shackle — give no sukha; break the prāṇa. Two decorated-prison images: a trident made of sandalwood (= the weapon is from a sweet-substance, but it is still a weapon); a shackle made of gold (= the binding is by valuable-substance, but it is still a binding). Decoration-of-the-prison does not make it not-prison; it still gives no sukha and destroys the prāṇa.
-
तुका म्हणे नरकीं घाली अभिमान — जरी होय ज्ञान गर्व ताठा — abhimāna sends to naraka — even if there is jñāna, garva-tāṭha drowns. The closing-warning. Abhimāna sends to naraka. Even if jñāna is present, garva-tāṭha (pride-stiffness) drowns. The jñāna does not protect against the abhimāna; the abhimāna with-jñāna sinks together. (Compare 244 abhimāna-substitution is julūma; 254 brahma-niṣṭha-with-bhūta-matsara has the brahma-jñāna stolen.)

For someone today
This abhang names three traps that prevent sukha and protection:
-
Bad-company-trap: even parents may be predators. Māy-bāp jarī sarpiṇī bōkā — sangē sukhā na pāve bāḷa. Natural-bond does not guarantee good-company. If your closest-natural-bond is predatory, the child / dependent does not get sukha there. (This is important for adult-children of toxic-parents: the bond does not require staying-in-predator-company.)
-
Decorated-prison-trap: sandalwood-trident, gold-shackle. Sandalwood-fragrant trident still pierces; gold-glittering shackle still binds. Decoration of the prison does not free you. Recognize when your binding is decorated (= the binding-substance is valuable, prized, socially-honored) — it is still binding.
-
Abhimāna-trap: even with jñāna. Abhimāna sends to naraka — jñāna with garva-tāṭha drowns. The most-subtle trap. Even if you have jñāna, if you carry garva-tāṭha (pride-stiffness) with it, the jñāna drowns with the abhimāna. The jñāna-without-pride-removal is a bigger trap than no-jñāna. (Because the no-jñāna person knows they don't know; the jñāni-with-pride thinks they know — pride is invisible to them.)
For today: recognize bad-company even when natural-bond claims it; recognize decorated-prisons; check whether your jñāna is carrying garva-tāṭha. The third trap is the most-dangerous because it is the most-invisible.
This abhang is psychologically important: it names three patterns that look-like-good-things-but-prevent-sukha — natural-bond-with-predators, decorated-prison, jñāna-with-pride. All three appear positive on the surface; all three prevent the deeper-good.
-
Decorated-prison-trap: sandalwood-trident, gold-shackle.
Most-subtle trap.
Where this applies
- Natural-bond doesn't guarantee good-company. Even parents may be predators.
- Decorated-prison is still prison. Sandalwood-trident, gold-shackle.
- Jñāna with garva-tāṭha drowns. Most-invisible trap.
