Abhanga 486

A life fully staked on sincere effort and simple trust carries you safely across hardship, because God stays close to the simple-hearted and trusting.

When life-staked effort-bhāva makes the boat firm — and you have to recognize this register

When the deva dwells where viśvāsa is the jāti — and you accept this dwelling-rule

When the deva is truly-bound to the simple-hearted — and you receive this fidelity

The verse

जीवेंसाटीं यत्नभाव । त्याची नाव बळकट ॥१॥ पैल तीरा जातां कांहीं । संदेह नाहीं भवनदी ॥ध्रु.॥ विश्वासाची धन्य जाती । तेथें वस्ती देवाची ॥२॥ तुका म्हणे भोळियांचा । देव साचा अंकित ॥३॥

Literal translation

Jīve-sāṭīm yatna-bhāva — that nāva is bāḷakaṭa. Going to the other shore — no samdeha — bhava-nadī. Of viśvāsa — blessed jāti — there vasti of deva. Tuka says: of the bhōḷiyām — deva is sācā ankita.

What it means

A short yatna-bhāva-firm-boat-bhōḷiyāmcā-deva abhang. Three claims:

जीवेंसाटीं यत्नभाव — त्याची नाव बळकट — jīve-sāṭīm yatna-bhāva — that nāva is bāḷakaṭa. The opening-claim: theyatna-bhāva(effort-stance) staked-with-the-life — that one'snāva(boat) isbāḷakaṭa(firm / strong). Life-staked-effort gives a strong-boat.
पैल तीरा जातां कांहीं — संदेह नाहीं भवनदी — going to the other shore — no samdeha — bhava-nadī. The crossing-claim: going to thepaila-tīra(the other shore); nosamdeha(doubt) at thebhava-nadī(river-of-becoming). Doubt-free crossing.
विश्वासाची धन्य जाती — तेथें वस्ती देवाची — of viśvāsa — blessed jāti — there vasti of deva. The deva-dwells-where-trust-is claim: ofviśvāsa(trust), blessed is thejāti (kind / type / family);there is the vasti (dwelling) of the deva. Deva dwells in the trust-jāti.
तुका म्हणे भोळियांचा — देव साचा अंकित — Tuka says: of the bhōḷiyām — deva is sācā ankita. The closing-claim: Tuka says: of thebhōḷiyām(simple-hearted, naive-trusters) — the deva issācā ankita(truly-bound, the genuinely-tied / the one truly-yoked). Deva-of-the-simple-hearted-is-truly-bound.

For someone today

When you stake your whole life on real effort, that commitment becomes a boat strong enough to carry you. Crossing the river of worldly hardship stops being something to doubt once you have truly committed. Wherever there is genuine trust, that is where you will find God living — trust itself is the fellowship he dwells in. Tukaram says God belongs, truly and completely, to the simple-hearted; it isn't the clever or the calculating who hold him close, but those who trust him plainly and without guile.

मराठी: जेव्हा तुम्ही खऱ्या प्रयत्नात आपलं संपूर्ण आयुष्य पणाला लावता, तेव्हा तीच बांधिलकी तुम्हाला पैलतीरी नेणारी मजबूत नाव बनते. संसाराच्या नदीतून पार होणं संशयाची गोष्ट राहत नाही, एकदा तुम्ही मनापासून वचनबद्ध झालात की. जिथे खरा विश्वास असतो, तिथेच देव वास करतो — विश्वास हाच तो सहवास आहे जिथे तो राहतो. तुकाराम म्हणतात की देव खरोखर आणि पूर्णपणे भोळ्या, साध्या मनाच्या माणसांचा आहे; हुशार किंवा हिशेबी माणसं त्याला जवळ बाळगत नाहीत, तर जे साधेपणाने, कपटाशिवाय त्याच्यावर विश्वास ठेवतात तेच त्याला जवळ बाळगतात.
