Abhanga 849
Longing for the divine can grow so intense that the heart rushes ahead while the body sits behind, stunned and frozen like a lifeless shell.
The verse
Literal translation
Darśana — āsa. Now — not — sāhē — udāsa. Jīva — come — pāyāmpāśīm. Here — kalivara. Nothing — nāṭhavē. Ṭhāya — sat — doesn't-get-up. Tuka says: jīva — still — Tuka — ṭhakāvalā — ṭhāyī.

What it means
A longing-for-darśana-despondence-not-borne-jīva-come-to-feet-side-here-with-corpse-body-nothing-recalled-sat-doesn't-get-up-Tuka-stunned-in-place-with-jīva-still-there abhang. Viraha-stupefaction register. Three claims:
-
Jīva-at-feet-and-corpse-body-here-claim. Theāsafordarśana; now, theudāsa(despondent-state, theudāsaof viraha) is notsāhē (borne);the jīva has come to the pāyām-pāśīm (right-near-the-feet);here (it) is — with the kalivara (the body-as-corpse).Jīva-at-feet; corpse-body-here. (Vivid bilocation: thejīvahas flown-to-the-feet, while thekalivara(corpse-body) remains-here. The body without-jīva is described ascorpse — the viraha is so-extreme that the body-feels-like-a-corpse.)
-
Nothing-recalled-sat-doesn't-get-up-claim. Nothing isnāṭhavē (recalled, remembered);sat-in-place (ṭhāyī baisalē), it-nuṭhavē (doesn't-get-up).Sat-frozen-nothing-recalled. (Stupefaction: the body is in viraha-stupor — frozen-in-place, recalling-nothing.)
-
Tuka-stunned-in-place-with-jīva-still-there-claim. Look — even though thejīva is still-there; Tuka wasṭhakāvalā (stunned, frozen-still, fooled) in ṭhāyī (place).Jīva-still-there-yet-stunned-in-place. (Closing-paradox: thejīvais still in the body — yet Tuka isṭhakāvalā(frozen-still, like-a-fool, like-a-stone) — the body isbhōktṛhīna even with-jīva-present. The viraha-stupor is total.)

For someone today
This abhang names the pattern of stupor caused by longing:
-
The longing for a vision of God; that despondence can no longer be borne; my soul has flown to Your feet, while what remains here is only a lifeless body. Soul and body pulled apart.
-
Nothing is remembered; sitting frozen in place, unable to rise. A stupor.
-
Even with the soul still present, Tuka sat stunned in place. Stunned where he sat.
For today: the longing for a vision of God, and the despondence of separation, can no longer be borne; the soul has flown ahead to God's feet, while what remains here is only a lifeless shell of a body; nothing is remembered, sitting frozen in place, unable to rise; even with the soul still present within, Tuka sat stunned where he was.
This abhang is one of the most extreme statements in the corpus of the stupor caused by separation from God — the soul flown ahead to God's feet while the body remains behind, frozen. Compare 0846, where the same state of separation appears as a tender, running plea to a mother — the same anguish of separation, but here it is worked out through this image of the soul and body pulled apart, and the devotee left stunned in place. "Tuka sat stunned in place" is the precise close of this state of stupor brought on by longing.
