Real honor comes from genuine inner quality and courage, not from outward appearance, pure lineage, or decoration, all of which are worthless if the character underneath is base.
The verse
वेशा नाहीं बोल अवगुण दूषीले । ऐशा बोला भले झणें क्षोभा ॥१॥ कोण नेणे अन्न जीवाचें जीवन । विषमेळवण विष होय ॥ध्रु.॥ सोनें शुद्ध नेणे कोण हा विचार । डांकें हीनवर केलें त्यासी ॥२॥ याती शुद्ध परि अधम लक्षण । वांयां गेलें तेणें सोंगें ही तें ॥३॥ तुका म्हणे शूर तो चि पावे मान । आणीक मंडण भार वाही ॥४॥

For someone today
Don't blame the clothes, blame the flaws — the outer dress itself is not at fault, it's the bad qualities underneath that deserve criticism, so don't get worked up over mere appearances. Food sustains life, but mix it with poison and it becomes poison; gold is pure, but adulterate it with alloy and it becomes inferior. Someone can be born into a pure lineage and still have a low character, and then that noble birth turns out to be worthless pretense. Tukaram says only the truly courageous person earns real honor; everyone else is just carrying the weight of decoration. What actually matters is the substance inside a person, not their appearance, birth, or how they dress it up.
मराठी: वेशाला दोष देऊ नका, दोष तर अवगुणांना असतो — बाह्यरूप स्वतः चुकीचं नसतं, त्याखालचे वाईट गुण दोषास पात्र असतात, म्हणून केवळ वरवरच्या रूपावरून चिडू नका. अन्न जीवन देणारं असतं, पण त्यात विष मिसळलं की तेच अन्न विष बनतं; सोनं शुद्ध असतं, पण त्यात भेसळ केली की त्याची किंमत कमी होते. एखादी व्यक्ती शुद्ध कुळात जन्माला येऊ शकते, पण तिचं वर्तन हलकं असेल तर तो उच्च जन्मही व्यर्थ ठरतो. तुकाराम महाराज म्हणतात, खरा शूरच खरा मान मिळवतो; बाकीचे केवळ शृंगाराचं ओझं वाहत राहतात. माणसाच्या आतलं सत्त्व महत्त्वाचं असतं, त्याचं बाह्यरूप, जन्म किंवा सजावट नाही.
