Literal translation
Jyāsī viṣayāñce dhyāna — (for one) whose dhyāna is on viṣaya (sense-objects); tyāsī kaiñcā Nārāyaṇa — for him, where (is) Nārāyaṇa? Sādhu kaiñcā pāpīyāsī — where (is the) sādhu for a pāpī?; kāya chāṇḍāḷāsī Kāśī — what (is) Kāśī for a chāṇḍāḷa? Kāya patitāsī pitā — what (is the) pitā for a patita; kāya adhamāsī Gītā — what (is the) Gītā for an adhama? Tukā says: niranjanī — in the niranjana (pure-realm); śaṭa kaiñcā brahma-jñānī — what (is the place for) a śaṭa (deceiver, fraud) (calling himself) brahma-jñānī**?
What it means
A short impossibility-list discrimination verse. The structure: five-fold-list of mismatched-pairings — each item-and-its-supposed-context cannot-coexist when-the-inner-state is-wrong.
Verse 1: Jyāsī viṣayāñce dhyāna — tyāsī kaiñcā Nārāyaṇa — whose dhyāna on viṣaya — for him, where Nārāyaṇa? The opening-rule.
Verses 2-3 (the list): - sādhu and pāpī — the wicked-one cannot-meet-the-saint - Kāśī and chāṇḍāḷa — pilgrimage doesn't-help-the-degraded - pitā and patita — even-the-father is-lost-on-the-fallen - Gītā and adhama — scripture is-lost-on-the-base-conduct
The close: Tukā mhaṇe niranjanī — śaṭa kaiñcā brahma-jñānī — in the niranjana, where the śaṭa (fraud) (calling himself) brahma-jñānī. The pure-realm has no-place-for the fake-brahma-jñānī.
For someone today
A useful impossibility-list discrimination text. Whose dhyāna (is) on viṣaya — where (is) Nārāyaṇa? Where (is the) sādhu for a pāpī? What (is) Kāśī for a chāṇḍāḷa? What (is the) pitā for a patita? What (is the) Gītā for an adhama? In the niranjana — what (place) for a śaṭa (fraud) (calling himself) brahma-jñānī? The verse-claim: outer-context cannot-overcome-wrong-inner-state. Five-fold-pairs all-make-the-same-point: the inner-disposition determines what-helps-and-what-doesn't. The pure-realm rejects the fake-brahma-jñānī.
Where this applies
- The what-doesn't-belong-where; mismatched-states discrimination text
- Recognizing viṣaya-dhyāna and Nārāyaṇa are mutually-exclusive
- Anti-śaṭa-brahma-jñānī polemic
