Abhanga 2992
It is honest, not disrespectful, to name the anger of feeling robbed when someone you depended on is taken away from you.
The verse
Literal translation
Paḍilā Hrṣīkeśī — fallen (= caught), Hrṣīkeśī; jāba sakaḷa karaṇe — (you are) answerable for-all-the-doing. Māṇasām-madhūn — from among themāṇasa(people); uṭhavile khāṇōryā — (you) raised-up thekhāṇōryā(eater, the-one-eating-our-savings). Jālāsī kōṭhōnī — from where did you come —paidā(born); chōrā dehāñcyā — chōrā(thief) of the body. Aise kāya gele — what did this go; hōte tuja na purate — would-it-not-suffice (you)?
What it means
A 3-verse striking-accusation verse. NON-Tukārām — part of the extended-cluster. The bhakta-brother accuses the Lord of being-a-chōrā-dehāñcyā (thief-of-the-body) who-raised-up-the-eater (Tukārām, whose-renunciation has-cost-the-family-its-supports).
The image: the Lord raised Tukārām up from-the-family (where-he-was-providing-for-them) and now-the-family-suffers. The Lord is-called chōrā-dehāñcyā — thief of-the-body (taking-Tukārām-bodily-away).
For someone today
Here Tukaram's brother makes one of the sharpest accusations in the whole cluster: he calls God a thief of the body who lifted a family member away from ordinary life and duties, leaving the household to struggle without him. He demands to know where God even came from and asks bluntly whether taking away this person's care and support was really necessary. It's a striking example of grief and resentment spoken plainly; when someone we love changes path or is taken from us, even in the name of devotion, it's honest to feel robbed.
Where this applies
- When someone you depended on has left to pursue a calling, leaving you to cope alone
- When you feel like a loved one's absence has left your family without support
- When you're angry at a higher power for what feels like an unfair loss
- When you need to voice the feeling of being robbed of someone's presence
