Abhanga 3343
A loving meeting with what you truly cherish brings real rest to the heart, and unlike worldly pleasures, that love never grows stale even with small effort.
The verse
Literal translation
Āvaḍīñce bhēṭī nive — by the fondness-meeting (one) becomes cool; chitta pāve viśrāntī — chitta reaches viśrānti. Baraviyāñcā chamda manā — the chanda of the good (one) to the mind; Nārāyaṇā avīṭa — Nārāyaṇa is avīṭa. Taḷaṇe kāmhī sāmyā pure — small frying suffices for sāmya; he tōm nure ye ruchi — this ruchi doesn't stay-out. Tukā mhaṇe baravē jāle — Tukā says: it has become good; phāvale he kaḷe tyā — the favor — he who knows.
What it means
A short 3-verse rasa-claim by Tukārām.
The argument: Fondness-meeting cools-the-bhakta, chitta-reaches-viśrānti. Mind-loves-the-good — Nārāyaṇa — un-cloying. Small-effort gives-sāmya (equal-becoming); rasa-doesn't-stay-out. He-who-knows gets-the-favor.
The avīṭa (un-cloying) claim is striking — the-Name and-the-Lord don't-tire-(of-tasting); unlike worldly-rasas-that-cloy, this-rasa-renews-itself.
For someone today
Tukārām's rasa-claim. By the fondness-meeting (one) becomes cool; the chitta reaches rest. The longing of the mind for the good (one) — Nārāyaṇa — is un-cloying. Some small frying suffices for the equal-becoming; this taste does not stay-out. It has become good — he who knows this — to him this favor is given. The verse permits the canonical bhakti-rasa: un-cloying, cooling, accessible by small effort.
