Abhanga 3452
Someone who never truly calls on God is being quietly robbed of their life and time, distracted even at sacred moments by wealth and family.
The verse
Literal translation
Mhaṇavitām Harī na mhaṇe tayālā — one called (to say) Harī but doesn't say; daravaḍā paḍilā dehāmāji — daravaḍā fell on deha. Āyuṣya-dhana tyāñce nele yamadūtīm — yamadūtas took his āyuṣya-dhana; bhulavilā niśchintīm kāmarange — deceived in carefree-state by kāma-ranga. Nāvaḍe tī kathā deuḷāsī jātām — kathā not-liked when going to temple; priya-dhana-sutā lakṣa tethe — priya-dhana-sutā is the focus there. Kōṇa netō tayām ghaṭikā divasā ekā — who takes him, one ghaṭikā of a day; kām re mhaṇe Tukā nāgavasī — why does Tukā say — you let yourself be stripped.
What it means
A 3-verse warning. The one-who-doesn't-say-Hari is-being-raided continuously by yamadūtas; his lakṣa (focus) is on priya-dhana-sutā (wealth, son) even at-the-temple.
For someone today
Tukaram warns that someone who claims devotion but never actually calls on God is being quietly raided, moment by moment, while their life and time slip away, deceived into a false sense of carefree comfort by ordinary sensual pleasures. Even when such a person goes to the temple, their mind isn't on the sacred story being told there, it's still fixed on their wealth and their children. Tukaram asks pointedly, who is taking even a single hour of your day for what really matters, and why do you keep letting yourself be robbed of it?
