Even an unexpected arrival at something sacred makes a long journey worthwhile, and quiet, humble service in that moment is itself the real reward to carry home.
The verse
अवचित या तुमच्या पायां । देवराया पावलों ॥१॥
बरवें जालें देशाउर । आल्या दुर सारिखें ॥ध्रु.॥
राहोनियां जातों ठाया । आलियाची निशानी ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे चरणसेवा । जोडी हेवा लाधली ॥३॥
Literal translation
Avachita yā tumache pāyām — unexpectedly to your feet; Deva-rāyā pāvalōm — Deva-rāyā, I reached. Baravo jāle deśāura — good that the foreign land happened; ālyā dura sārikhem — (it was) like coming from afar. Rāhōniyām jātōm ṭhāyā — staying, I (then) go to (my) place; āliyāchī niśānī — the token of having come. Tukā mhaṇe charaṇa-sevā — Tukā says: foot-service; jōḍī hevā lādhalī — the prize of union has been attained.
What it means
A 3-verse compact darśana/pilgrimage text. Unexpectedly-reached-your-feet, Deva-rāyā; good-that-the-foreign-land happened (the journey); staying-then-returning-to-my-place — this-is-the-niśānī (mark) of-having-come; charaṇa-sevā — the prize of union. The poet treats the Pandharī (or sant-meeting) journey as the niśānī of having arrived.
For someone today
Tukaram describes reaching God's feet quite unexpectedly, almost by surprise, and reflects that it was worth traveling far, worth the whole journey to a distant place, just to arrive at that moment. He stays there for a while, serving at those feet, and then returns home carrying that experience with him as a kind of proof that he truly made the journey. For Tukaram, that quiet time of service at God's feet is itself the real prize, more valuable than anything else the journey could have offered.
