Abhanga 4385
Placing your full trust in one steady source, instead of scattering your hopes and requests among many, is what actually brings your soul real contentment.
The verse
देव आतां आम्हीं केला असे ॠणी । आणिका वांचूनि काय गुंता ॥१॥
एकाचें आर्जव करू एकनिष्ठ । आणिकांचा बोभाट कामा नये ॥ध्रु.॥
बहुतांचे आर्जव केलिया खटपट । नाहीं हा शेवट शुद्ध होत ॥२॥
पुरता विचार आणोनी मानसीं । अंतरलों सर्वासि पई देखा ॥३॥
तुका म्हणे देवा चरणीं असो भाव । तेणें माझा जीव संतोष हा ॥४॥
Literal translation
Deva-rṇī-now — no-other-entanglement. Ēka-niṣṭha-ārjava — others-bōbhāṭa-no-good. Many-ārjava-khaṭapaṭa — no-śuddha-end. Full-vichāra-mānasī — antaralōm-everyone. Tukā: bhāva-at-Deva-charaṇa — jīva-santōṣa.
What it means
A 4-verse exclusive-resort text. Deva — we've now made him our debtor — apart from him, what entanglement is needed? Let us make supplication of one, with single-faith — the clamoring of others doesn't serve our cause. Making supplication of many is mere laborious-fuss — it doesn't become a clean end. Having brought the full deliberation into the mind, I have separated myself from everyone, see. Tukā says: let the bhāva be at Deva's feet — by that my soul has contentment. Pair with 4181 (Deva-made-rṇī-by-bhakti-bhāva yamak-bandha), 4287 (some-blame-some-praise hook-at-Viṭhṭhal).
For someone today
Tukaram describes making God his one true reliance, someone he has, through devotion, effectively made indebted to him, so that no other entanglement is needed. He decides to place his single-minded trust in one source rather than running around pleading with many different people or powers, because scattering your requests that way is just exhausting effort that never reaches a clean, satisfying end. After thinking this through fully in his own mind, he deliberately steps back from depending on everyone else. He ends by saying that keeping his faith fixed at God's feet, and nowhere else, is exactly what gives his soul real contentment.
मराठी: तुकाराम इथे सांगतात की त्यांनी देवालाच आपला एकमेव आधार बनवला आहे, भक्तीने जणू त्याला आपला ऋणी केले आहे, त्यामुळे इतर कोणत्याही गुंतागुंतीची गरज उरत नाही. अनेक लोकांकडे किंवा शक्तींकडे धावाधाव करत विनवणी करण्याऐवजी ते एकाच ठिकाणी, एकनिष्ठ श्रद्धेने विसंबून राहायचे ठरवतात, कारण असे विखुरलेले प्रयत्न केवळ थकवणारी दगदग असते जी कधीच शुद्ध, समाधानकारक निष्कर्षापर्यंत पोचत नाही. मनात हा सगळा विचार पक्का केल्यावर ते जाणीवपूर्वक इतर सर्वांवरचे अवलंबित्व सोडून देतात. शेवटी ते म्हणतात की आपली श्रद्धा फक्त देवाच्या चरणी स्थिर ठेवणे, आणि इतर कुठेही नाही, यातूनच त्यांच्या जिवाला खरे समाधान मिळते.
