Good birth or nearness to something sacred means nothing without real devotion, only genuine devotion, not pedigree or proximity, earns a place before God.
The verse
तुळसीवृंदावनीं उपजला कांदा । नावडे गोविंदा कांहीं केल्या ॥१॥
तैसे वंशामध्यें जाले जे मानव । जाणावे दानव अक्त ते ॥ध्रु.॥
केवड्यामधील निगपध कणसें । तैशीं तीं माणसें भक्तिहीन ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे जेवीं वंदनांतिल आळी । न चढे निढळीं देवाचिया ॥३॥
Literal translation
Tulasī-vrndāvana-grew-onion — Govinda-doesn't-want. So-in-vamśa-mānava-bhakti-hīna — know-as-dānava-akta. Kēvaḍā's-pithless-stalk — so-bhakti-hīna-people. Tukā: as-sandalwood-worm — doesn't-rise-on-Deva's-forehead.
What it means
A 3-image anti-good-birth-without-bhakti text. In the basil-altar-pot, an onion grew — Govinda doesn't desire it — no matter what is done. So those humans born in a (noble) lineage but bhakti-less — know them as demons, unworthy. Like the pithless-stalk within the kēvaḍā (screwpine) — so are people who are bhakti-less. Tukā says: just as the worm within the sandalwood — it does not rise to be placed on the Deva's forehead. The 3-image-set counters caste-pride: (1) onion-in-tulasī-pot — wrong-content in right-place — (2) pithless-stalk in kēvaḍā — outer-form without inner-essence — (3) worm-in-sandalwood — adjacent-to-purity but-still-impure. Pair with 2973 (inner-quality-over-jāti).
For someone today
Tukārām gives three sharp images to say that good birth or a respected background means nothing without real devotion. An onion that happens to grow in a sacred basil altar doesn't become wanted just because of where it grew, Govinda still doesn't want it. In the same way someone born into a fine family but empty of devotion is like a stalk with no core inside, or a worm that lives right inside fragrant sandalwood yet never gets to touch God's forehead, even though it lives right next to what is holy. Being close to something sacred, by birth or by proximity, does not make you sacred yourself, only actual devotion does that.
मराठी: तुकाराम तीन ठाशीव प्रतिमांतून सांगतात की भक्तीशिवाय नुसते चांगले कुळ किंवा प्रतिष्ठा काहीच कामाची नाही. तुळशी वृंदावनात कांदा उगवला तरी तो चांगल्या जागी उगवला म्हणून हवासा वाटत नाही, गोविंदाला तो नकोच असतो. त्याचप्रमाणे चांगल्या घराण्यात जन्मलेला पण भक्तिहीन माणूस म्हणजे आतून पोकळ दांड्यासारखा, किंवा सुगंधी चंदनात राहणाऱ्या किड्यासारखा, जो पवित्रतेच्या इतक्या जवळ राहूनही कधीच देवाच्या कपाळावर स्थान मिळवत नाही. फक्त जन्माने किंवा सान्निध्याने पवित्र गोष्टीजवळ असणे तुम्हाला पवित्र बनवत नाही, त्यासाठी खरी भक्तीच लागते.
