Abhanga 160

This abhang is the unforgiving check-list for any practice:

When you've been skipping the shuddhi (clean-up) step and wondering why the result is bad — and the abhang's scolding lands
When the signs of incoming failure were obvious (the pan was telling you) but you didn't notice — and you have to face this
When you've been treating yourself as the gadhḍī (stubborn one) of the abhang — and you have to take the pan seriously

Literal translation

English: You filled the basket without finishing the cleaning — ground it while dirty. That's what you did. Do the cleaning thoroughly, O lovely friend; why, sinner, did you ruin the siddhi? Look — was the winnowing-pan actually inspected? Without inspection, you ruined it, world-trashing-one. The pan is your responsibility — the meal turns out as the grinding was. Take the pan-companion with all firmness, stubborn-girl — you ruined it all in one go. While grinding, the clattering — why don't you notice? Have your eyes and ears gone? Without efforting at the oja-check (the rhythm-check), you fall into the crevice — Tuka says.

What it means

The third of the kanḍaṇa (rice-pounding) cluster (158-160), and the harshest in register. Where 158 set up the work and 159 named the song-trick, this abhang is the scolding — the companion-women's voice when one of them has skipped shuddhi (the cleaning step before grinding) and ruined the siddhi (the finished result).

The harsh address is folk-women's-work voice — vongaḷi, papiṇi, jagajhoḍi, gadhḍidirty-one, sinner, world-trasher, stubborn-girl. The accusations are precise: - You skipped the shuddhi - You did not check the supa (winnowing-pan) properly before grinding - You ignored the clattering — the audible sign of grain-with-stones - You did not check the oja — the rhythm-quality - And so you fell into the crevice — the failed-result

Tukaram's recoding (consistent with the cluster): kanḍaṇa is bhakti-practice, supa-companion is shuddha-buddhi, clattering is the warning-signs in your practice that something is wrong, oja is rhythm-discernment, and sāndīs paḍasi is the predictable failure-outcome of skipping any of these. The harshness is not directed at the careless saint; it is the abhang's self-warning voice — Tukaram speaking to himself as the careless companion.

For someone today

This abhang is the unforgiving check-list for any practice:

  1. Did you do the shuddhi (preparation / cleaning) before the main work? Or did you skip it?
  2. Did you actually inspect the supa (the work-substrate) before pounding? Or did you assume it was clean?
  3. When the clattering started (the warning-signs in the work), did you notice? Or were eyes and ears gone?
  4. Did you check the oja (rhythm-quality)? Or did you just rush through?

Skip any one — पडसी सांदीसyou fall into the crevice (the failed result). The output is downstream of the substrate-quality, not of effort. दळिल्या जेवण जैसें तैसेंthe meal turns out as the grinding was.

The harsh-voice is medicine. Tukaram is not abusing anyone; he is naming the cost of careless preparation in the bluntest folk-women's register, because in that register the truth is hard to evade.
