Abhanga 182

This abhang names the gratitude-register for the saint — and it is not a fully-payable debt. Three principles:

What it means

A sant-debt abhang — Tukaram naming the un-payable debt to the saints. Three movements:

1. निरंतर जागविती — continually wake (me). The saints' role is wake-up. Without their continual waking, the bhakta sleeps. The continuous-tense matters: it is not one waking, but a durative waking-relationship.

2. उतराई व्हावें — जीव थोडा — to be released-from-the-debt — (this) life is too little. The standard offering — putting one's life at the feet — is insufficient. The debt exceeds the offering. This is not a complaint; it is a recognition.

3. सहज बोलणें हित उपदेश — करूनि सायास शिकविती — (their) natural-speech is helpful-instruction; with effort, they teach. Two registers of the saints' help:

4. Sahaja — effortless / spontaneous. Their ordinary-speech itself is teaching.

5. Sāyāsa — with-effort. They also deliberately teach with effort. The bhakta is constantly receiving both.

6. The closing image — वत्स धेनुचिया चित्तीं — तैसें मज येती सांभाळित — like a calf in the cow-mother's heart, so they come watching over me. The vatsa-dhenu (calf-cow) image is the standard Marathi affective register for one-watching-over-the-other. The saints relate to Tuka as the cow-mother to the calf — constantly minded, protected without being asked.

This abhang names the gratitude-register for the saint — and it is not a fully-payable debt. Three principles:

1. The saints' help is continuous waking (निरंतर जागविती). It is not a one-time event. They keep you from re-sleeping.
2. The debt cannot be fully repaid. Putting your life at their feet is too little. This is freeing, not depressing — stop trying to balance the books; let the asymmetry stand.
3. Both registers of help. Sahaja (their ordinary speech is teaching) and sāyāsa (deliberate teaching). Receive both.
4. The relational frame is cow-mother to calf. Watching-over without being asked.

For today: if you have a real saint / teacher / saint-figure in your life — name what you have received as a continuous waking, accept that the debt cannot be balanced, and stop trying to repay it on the merit-economy terms. The vatsa-dhenu relation is not a debt-economy; it is a being-watched-over. Receive this; do not try to convert it into a transaction.

मराठी: ही ओवी saint साठी gratitude-register नाव सांगते — आणि ते पूर्ण-payable debt नाही. तीन तत्त्वं:

1. संतांची मदत निरंतर जागवणं (निरंतर जागविती). ती one-time नाही. ते तुम्हाला परत झोपायला देत नाहीत.
2. debt पूर्ण फेडता येत नाही. पायी जीव ठेवणं थोडं. हे freeing आहे, depressing नाही — books balance करायचा प्रयत्न थांबवा; asymmetry राहू द्या.
3. दोन्ही register मदत. Sahaja (त्यांचं ordinary speech teaching) आणि sāyāsa (deliberate शिकवणं). दोन्ही घ्या.
4. Relational frame वत्स-धेनु. न-मागता-watching-over.

आज: तुमच्या आयुष्यात real saint / teacher / saint-figure असेल — मिळालेलं continuous waking म्हणून नाव सांगा, debt balance होत नाही हे स्वीकारा, आणि merit-economy terms वर repay करायचा प्रयत्न थांबवा. वत्स-धेनु relation debt-economy नाही; being-watched-over. हे घ्या; transaction मध्ये convert करू नका.
