Abhanga 277

This abhang gives three diagnostics for the adhama-friendship:

The verse

Literal translation

What it means

A unstable-adhama-friendship abhang. Three claims:

1. अधमाची यारी — रंग पतंगाचे परी — the adhama's friendship — color of the moth. Patanga — moth / butterfly — has bright-but-fading colors (the wing-color rubs off when you touch). The adhama's friendship is bright at first, fades on contact. Don't trust the initial-brightness.

2. विटे न लगतां क्षण — मोल जाय वांयां विण — fades without a moment passing — value falls in vain. The fragility-test: not even a moment of pressure and the friendship-value falls vāyām (in-vain, useless). The adhama-friendship cannot withstand any test.

3. सर्पाचिया परी — विषें भरला कल्हारीं — like the serpent — filled with venom in the pot. The hidden-poison image. The kalhārī (pot) contains the serpent filled with viṣa. From outside, the pot appears safe; open it, the venom strikes. The adhama-friend appears safe but contains hidden-venom.

4. तुका म्हणे देवा — मज झणी ऐसे दावा — Tuka says: deva — lest — show me such. The closing-prayer. Zaṇī — lest, may-it-not-be — don't ever show me such (an adhama-friend). The honest-prayer: protect me from this kind of relation.

This abhang gives three diagnostics for the adhama-friendship:

1. Moth-color: bright at first, fades on contact. Ranga patangāce parī. If a new-friendship is too-bright-too-fast, check the moth-color quality: does it fade on the first contact-with-difficulty?

2. Fails the moment-of-pressure test. Viṭē na lagatām kṣaṇa. Even one moment of pressure and the friendship-value falls in vain. The test for adhama-friendship is the moment-of-difficulty.

3. Hidden venom in the pot. Sarpāciyā parī viṣē bharalā kalhārīm. The adhama-friend appears safe but contains hidden venom. Open the pot at the wrong-moment, the strike comes. (Compare 253's ādara-first / sōnga-exposed-later sequence.)

4. Honest prayer: don't-show-me-such. Maja zaṇī aisē dāvā. The bhakta prays for protection from this kind of relation. This is not anti-friendship in general; it is anti-adhama-friendship-which-pretends-to-be-friendship.

For today: check new-friendships for moth-color quality; test for moment-of-pressure resilience; suspect hidden venom if too-warm-too-fast; pray honestly: don't-show-me-such.

The complement to this abhang is real-friendship endures pressure, has substance-not-just-color, contains no hidden venom. The adhama-pattern is the negative-template for recognizing the real.

4. Honest prayer: मला असं दाखवू नको. मज झणी ऐसे दावा. Bhakta या प्रकारच्या relation पासून protection साठी प्रार्थना करतो. Anti-friendship general नाही; anti-adhama-friendship-which-pretends-to-be-friendship.

आज: नवी-friendships moth-color quality साठी check करा; moment-of-pressure resilience test करा; too-warm-too-fast असेल hidden venom suspect करा; honestly प्रार्थना करा: मला असं दाखवू नको.

Complement — real-friendship pressure withstand करते, substance-not-just-color, hidden venom contain करत नाही. Adhama-pattern real ओळखण्यासाठी negative-template.
