What it means
A same-look-different-substance abhang. Four pair-images:
-
तटस्थ-मानसीं vs आळसी — taṭastha-in-mind vs naturally-lazy. Taṭastha — the still, established meditation-state. Ālasī — the lazy, idle, unmoved-from-not-wanting state. Externally identical. The pārakhī (expert) knows the varma (secret-mark).
-
ध्यानीं जप vs बैसुनि झोप — japa in dhyāna vs sitting and sleeping. Both appear-as-sitting-eyes-closed. One does inner-japa; one sleeps. Externally identical.
-
सर्वस्वाचा त्याग vs पोटासाठीं जोग — renunciation of everything vs jōga for the belly. Both appear-as-renouncer. One renounces all; one performs renunciation as a livelihood. Externally identical. (Compare 244 abhimāna-renunciation; 273 no maṭha-pati for the real bhakta.)
-
भक्ति पोटासाठीं vs देवासवें गांठी — bhakti for belly vs gānṭhī with the deva. Both appear-as-bhakti. One does bhakti for livelihood / for siddhi / for material-prizes; one has gānṭhī (knot, real-connection) with the deva. Externally identical. (Compare 256 Viṭṭhal-coin in the kathā; 304 prema-bhāva in antara.)
-
वर्म पोटीं एका — फळें दोन — the varma is in the belly — one fruit, two effects. The closing-claim. Two pair-acts that look-identical externally produce fruits-two. The varma (the internal-secret-mark) is in the pōṭa (belly / inner-region). Same external-form, different internal-orientation, different fruits.

For someone today
This abhang names the same-look-different-substance discrimination:
-
External-forms can be identical; substance differs. Four pairs: taṭastha vs ālasī, dhyāna-japa vs sleep, sarva-svā-tyāga vs belly-jōga, bhakti-for-belly vs gānṭhī-with-deva. In each, the external-form is the same; the substance is opposite.
-
The varma is in the pōṭa. Inside is where the difference is. Don't judge by the external-form alone; check the internal-orientation.
-
The pārakhī (expert) knows. Not everyone can tell. The discrimination requires expertise / experience / pārakhī-eye. (Compare 308's paṣāṇḍiyā cannot taste; bhāva-presence makes the pratimā the deva.)
-
One fruit, two effects. Phaḷē dōna. The same-form produces different fruits depending on the internal-orientation. The form is not the determinant; the internal-orientation is.
For today: when evaluating a practice (in self or other), don't stop at the external-form; check the internal-orientation (the pōṭa). Two persons sitting in identical-meditation-posture may be taṭastha or ālasī, dhyāna or sleep. Don't assume same-form = same-substance.
This abhang is important diagnostically: it gives four common pair-confusions that all turn on the same-look principle. The cure is the pārakhī-eye that examines the pōṭa-orientation.
(Self-application: check your own practice — am I in dhyāna-mode or sleep-mode? am I doing tyāga of sarva-svā or jōga for the belly? am I doing bhakti for prizes or do I have gānṭhī-with-deva? The honest self-examination is the pārakhī-eye applied to oneself.)
मराठी: ही ओवी same-look-different-substance discrimination नाव सांगते:
-
External-forms identical असू शकतात; substance वेगळी. चार जोड्या: taṭastha vs ālasī, dhyāna-japa vs sleep, sarva-svā-tyāga vs belly-jōga, bhakti-for-belly vs gānṭhī-with-deva. प्रत्येक मध्ये, external-form same; substance opposite.
-
आज: practice evaluate करताना (self किंवा other), external-form वर थांबू नका; internal-orientation check करा (pōṭa).
Where this applies
- External-forms can be identical; substance differs. Four pair-confusions.
- The varma is in the pōṭa. Check internal-orientation.
- Pārakhī-eye required. Discrimination needs expertise.
- One fruit, two effects. Form ≠ determinant; orientation does.
