Abhanga 409

Even when daily obligations make you miss the moment you were longing for, the longing itself doesn't die and deserves to be honored.

When the meeting-time has passed and śiṇa remains — and you have to recognize this register
When managing right-and-wrong has caused suffering — and you accept this honest-fact
When jīva burns for Gopāla — let samsāra burn — and you receive this resolve

The verse

Literal translation

Came running-running — bhēṭi will happen, thinking — vēḷa has passed — my śiṇa remained. Now what to do? tell — how will He meet me? — for Hariprāṇa breaks — great āśā arose. Delays — by many — pulling ōḍhā — managing right-wrong — I have suffered pīḍā. Let samsāra burn — when will the end be enough? Tukya's svāmīGopāla — for Him — jīva burns.

What it means

A missed-the-meeting-time-jīva-burns abhang. Four claims:

  1. आलियें धांवति धांवति भेट होइल म्हुण — तंव ते टळली वेळ वो माझा उरला सीणcame running-running, thinking bhēṭi will happen — vēḷa has passed, śiṇa remained. The opening-lament: I came running, thinking thebhēṭiwill happen; but thevēḷa(time) has passed; myśiṇa(strain) remained. Missed-the-meeting; left only with strain.

  2. आतां काय करूं सांग वो मज भेटेल कैसा — हरिलागीं प्राण फुटे वो थोरी लागली आशाnow what to do, tell — how will He meet me? — for Hari, prāṇa breaks, great āśā arose. The desperation: what to do, tell me, how will He meet me?for Hari, theprāṇabreaks; greatāśā(hope) has arisen. Hope and desperation together.

  3. लाविला उशीर बहुतीं बहु ओढिती ओढा — सांभाळितां सांग असांग दुःख पावल्यें पीडाmany delays by many, pulling currents — managing right-wrong, I have suffered pīḍā. The delay-cause: many people delayed me, pulling manyōḍhā(currents) at me; managingsānga-asānga(right-and-wrong) — I have sufferedpīḍā(anguish). Worldly-management caused the missed-meeting.

  4. जळो आतां संसारु वो कई शेवट पुरे — तुकयाच्या स्वामी गोपाळालागीं जीव झुरेlet samsāra burn — when will the end be enough — Tukya's svāmī Gopāla — for Him jīva burns. The closing-resolve: letsamsāraburn — when will the end be enough?Tukya's svāmīGopālafor Him, myjīvaburns. Samsāra-aversion and jīva-burning-for-Gopāla.

For someone today

This verse captures the ache of running hard toward a meeting with the divine and arriving just after the moment has passed, left with nothing but exhaustion. It doesn't pretend that hope disappears with the disappointment; even after missing the moment, longing for Krishna keeps rising. It's honest that the delay wasn't really the speaker's fault: other people, other obligations, and the constant work of managing right and wrong pulled her away and caused real suffering. And it ends by naming what actually matters: let the tangle of daily life burn if it must, because the heart that longs for the divine will keep burning regardless.
