Abhanga 494
When you truly surrender, every relationship, duty, and even your own devotion stops being something you carry alone and becomes part of one all-encompassing bond with the divine.
The verse
Literal translation
You alone are māyabāpa-bamdhu-sakhā for us — vitta-gōta-jīvalaga of life. No other pramāṇa now — yoga-kṣema-bhāra placed on Your head. You alone are kriyā-karma-dharma-deva-kuḷa — tapa-tīrtha-vrata-guru all. Tukyā-bamdhu says: doer-of-the-task, deva — You alone are bhāva-bhakti-pūjā-puraskāra all.

What it means
A You-alone-everything-collapsed-into-deva abhang. Fourth of the Tukyā-bamdhu (Kānhōbā) cluster. A famous totalization-formula. Three claims:
-
तूं च मायबाप बंधु सखा आमचा — वित्त गोत जीवलग जीवाचा — आणीक प्रमाण नाहीं — योगक्षेमभार तुझे घातला माथां — You alone are māyabāpa-bamdhu-sakhā — vitta-gōta-jīvalaga of life — no other pramāṇa — yoga-kṣema-bhāra on Your head. The opening-collapse-of-relations: You alone are mother-father-brother-sakhā (friend) for us; vitta (wealth), gōta (kin), jīvalaga (life-mate) of life; no otherpramāṇa(proof, authority) now; yoga-kṣema-bhāra (the burden of getting-and-keeping) — I have placed on Your head. Relations-and-life-burden collapsed.
-
तूं च क्रियाकर्म धर्म देव तूं कुळ — तूं च तप तीर्थ व्रत गुरु सकळ — You alone are kriyā-karma-dharma-deva-kuḷa — tapa-tīrtha-vrata-guru all. The duties-collapse: You alone arekriyā-karma(ritual-action),dharma(duty/religion),deva(deity), andkuḷa(lineage / tutelary-deva); You alone aretapa(austerity),tīrtha(pilgrimage-place),vrata(vow), andguru— all. All the duties-and-honors that bind a Hindu life are collapsed into the one deva.
-
म्हणे तुकयाबंधु करिता कार्यता देवा — तूं च भाव भक्ति पूजा पुनस्कार आघवा — Tukyā-bamdhu says: doer-of-the-task, deva — You alone are bhāva-bhakti-pūjā-puraskāra all. The bhakti-itself-collapse: Tukyā-bamdhu says: You are thekaritā-kāryatā(the doer-and-the-task itself), deva; You alone are even thebhāva(sentiment), thebhakti(devotion), thepūjā(worship), and thepuraskāra(offering / honor) — all (āghavā). Even-the-bhakti-itself is You.

For someone today
In one of the most complete surrenders in the Gatha, Kanhoba says God is his mother, father, brother, and friend, his wealth and family, and the one to whom he hands the whole burden of getting and keeping what life requires. He goes further: God is also every ritual, duty, pilgrimage, vow, and teacher he might otherwise seek out separately. And most strikingly, he says even his own devotion, worship, and reverence are not really his doing at all — they too belong to God. This is the experience of a life where every separate relationship and obligation has collapsed into a single, all-encompassing bond, so nothing needs to be carried, sought, or performed alone anymore.
Where this applies
- All relations are You. Māyabāpa-bamdhu-sakhā.
- Yoga-kṣēma burden Yours. Don't carry.
- All duties and duty-makers are You. Kriyā-tapa-tīrtha-guru.
- Even bhāva and puraskāra are You. Bhakti-collapse.
