Abhanga 1066
Genuine devotion leaves real, unhidable marks earned through struggle, and it is by those marks, not by words, that you recognize someone truly transformed.

Literal translation
Jātī-pāīka — ādara — ṭhāya. Hatiyērē — vēṭhī-cīmsīm. Jītācē ghāya-ḍāya — pārakhiyā pāśīm — lōpē. Tuka says: Dēva mhuṇa jana — jālīyāñcyā khuṇā.

What it means
A the-jātī's-warrior-recognizes-the-warrior-respect-only-at-his-place-those-who-hold-weapons-for-stomach-are-truly-known-as-corvée-types-the-living-one's-blow-and-grit-is-true-what-hides-before-the-alien's-bond-we-bow-saying-Dēva-to-the-people-the-marks-of-those-who-have-become-we-know abhang. Jālīyāñcyā-khuṇā-jāṇatasōm register. The closing abhang of the paika-prakaraṇa, marked with ॥ at the end (the eleventh of an eleven-poem sub-series). Four claims:
-
Warrior-recognizes-warrior-claim. Thejātī'spāīkarecognizes (another)pāīka;ādaraonly at hisṭhāya. (One warrior recognizes another only at his proper place — a kindred-respect.)
-
For-stomach-corvée-claim. Those who holdhatiyērē (weapons) for-pōṭa;they are recognized as truly vēṭhī-cīmsīm (corvée-types — forced-laborers without conviction). (Mercenary-warriors are recognized as merely-corvée.)
-
Living-one's-blow-grit-claim. Thejītācē (live-one's) is the true ghāya-ḍāya (blow-and-grit, scar-and-wound, the marks of having-fought-and-survived); whatlōpē (hides) before the pārakhiyā's (alien's) pāśīm (in-front-of, in-the-bond-of)? (The living warrior's scars cannot be hidden from the enemy.)
-
We-know-the-marks-of-those-who-have-become-claim. Tuka says: wenamūm (bow to) Dēva, mhuṇa (calling-him) jana;the jālīyāñcyā khuṇā (the marks-of-those-who-have-become) we jāṇatasōm. (We bow to Dēva as if to the people — because we know the marks-of-those-who-have-become. The closing claim of the paika-prakaraṇa: we recognize the genuine warriors of Hari by their marks.)

For someone today
A true warrior recognizes another warrior, and gives him respect only where it is earned. Those who carry weapons merely to fill their stomachs are easily seen for what they are — hired hands without real conviction. But the living warrior's scars and grit are genuine, and cannot be hidden from someone who knows how to look. In the same way, Tuka says, we bow to God present in people, because we recognize the marks of those who have truly become transformed.
