Abhanga 1155
This is one of the most direct statements against caste in the whole Gatha: laughing, playing, walking the road, eating, sleeping, living an ordinary life, Tukaram declares plainly that caste means nothing to him. Hindu, dhed, or chambhar, whatever label society puts on someone, makes no difference at all. What matters to him is simple: whoever's mind is fixed on Rama's name, his own mind bows at that person's feet, regardless of their birth. And he adds a further point: what good is it to save only yourself? It is better to help give others a good name too.
The verse
Literal translation
Hāmsata khēlata cālata bāṭa — khāṇā khāṭa. Jātana-sum no pyāra — Hindū-dhēḍa-cambhāra. Rāma-nāva — pāva. Āpa-tarē — auran bhalā gharā'ī.

What it means
Hindi abhang. The most-explicit no-caste-distinction claim — Hindū-dhēḍa-cambhāra are no different to me. Four claims:
-
Walking-the-path-claim.
-
No-caste-claim. (Among the most-explicit no-caste claims in the Gatha.)
-
Whoever-on-Rāma-I-on-feet-claim.
-
Better-to-give-good-name-claim.

For someone today
This is one of the most direct statements against caste in the whole Gatha: laughing, playing, walking the road, eating, sleeping, living an ordinary life, Tukaram declares plainly that caste means nothing to him. Hindu, dhed, or chambhar, whatever label society puts on someone, makes no difference at all. What matters to him is simple: whoever's mind is fixed on Rama's name, his own mind bows at that person's feet, regardless of their birth. And he adds a further point: what good is it to save only yourself? It is better to help give others a good name too.
Where this applies
- Walking-path. Bāṭa.
