Why do I stumble so much, Tukaram asks, when the trouble only comes from losing sight of who I really am? The inner witness always knows the truth, he says; there is a reality above the surface of the mind, and it never forgets. That same presence, called here Tuka-prabhu, fills every land and place, leaving nothing empty anywhere. And in humility he makes a striking pledge: whoever repeats the name of Rama again and again, he would gladly be the sandals at that person's feet.
The verse
इतन गोते काहे खाता । जब तूं आपणा भूल न होता ॥१॥ अंतरजामी जानत साचा । मनका एक उपर बाचा ॥२॥ तुकाप्रभु देसबिदेस । भरिया खाली नहिं लेस ॥३॥ मेरे रामको नाम जो लेवे बारोंबार । त्याके पाऊं मेरे तनकी पैजार ॥ध्रु.॥
Literal translation
Itana gōtē kāhē — āpaṇā bhūla. Antar-jāmī sācā — upara bāca. Tuka-prabhu dēsa-bidēsa — bhariyā khālī. Rāma-nāma bāra-bāra — paijāra pāva.
