Abhanga 1156
True service gives without keeping anything back, the way earth, cow, cloud, tree, sun, and moon do, and this is exactly what the divine continually does for a world that mostly fails to notice.
The verse
काहे भूमि इतना भार राखे । दुभत धेनु नहिं दुध चाखे ॥१॥ बरसतें मेघ फलतेंहें बिरखा । कोन काम अपनी उन्होति रखा ॥२॥ काहे चंदा सुरज खावे फेरा । खिन एक बैठन पावत घेरा ॥३॥ काहे परिस कंचन करे धातु । नहिं मोल तुटत पावत घातु ॥४॥ कहे तुका उपकार हि काज । सब कररहिया रघुराज ॥५॥ जग चले उस घाट कोन जाय । नहिं समजत फिरफिर गोदे खाय ॥ध्रु.॥
Literal translation
Bhūmi bhāra — dhēnu dūdha. Mēgha birakha — un-hōti. Candra-sūrya phērā — no baiṭhana. Parisa kañcana — ghātu. Tuka says: upakāra-kāja — Raghu-rāja. Jaga — ghāṭa kōna — gōdē.

What it means
Hindi abhang — magnificent meditation on selfless service. Six examples of those-who-give-without-keeping-for-themselves: the earth holds the mass; the milking-cow doesn't taste its own milk; the clouds rain (not for themselves); the trees bear fruit (not for themselves); the moon-and-sun never sit down; the philosopher's-stone turns base-metal to gold (and gets struck for it). Then Tuka says: all this is upakāra-kāja — Raghu-rāja keeps doing it for everyone. Closing: but the world doesn't reach that shore — going round-and-round, eating blows.

For someone today
This verse strings together images of pure, uncomplaining giving: the earth carries the weight of the whole world without protest, the cow gives milk but never tastes it herself, clouds rain and trees bear fruit though they get nothing back, and the sun and moon never once stop to rest. Even the legendary touchstone that turns base metal into gold takes the wear and the blows itself while giving away its power freely. This, Tukaram says, is exactly the kind of selfless service Raghu-raja, the Lord, keeps doing for everyone, all the time. And yet the world keeps going in circles, not understanding, taking its blows again and again instead of reaching that shore of understanding.
मराठी: या अभंगात निर्व्याज देण्याची अनेक चित्रं गुंफलेली आहेत - पृथ्वी तक्रार न करता सगळ्या जगाचा भार वाहते, गाय दूध देते पण स्वतः चाखत नाही, ढग बरसतात आणि झाडं फळं देतात तरी त्यांना काहीच परत मिळत नाही, आणि सूर्य-चंद्र कधीच विश्रांती घेत नाहीत. अगदी पौराणिक परीसही लोखंडाचं सोनं करतो आणि स्वतःची झीज सोसून आपली शक्ती मुक्तपणे वाटतो. हेच, तुकाराम म्हणतात, नेमकं तेच निःस्वार्थ सेवाकार्य Raghu-rāja सतत सर्वांसाठी करत असतो. आणि तरीही जग गोल-गोल फिरतच राहतं, न समजता, वारंवार धक्के खात राहतं, त्या समजुतीच्या किनाऱ्यापर्यंत न पोहोचता.
