Abhanga 1188

A mother cow may wander off and leave her calf behind for a while, but the bond of love between them does not loosen just because they are apart. Tukārām uses this to describe the tie between the devotee and the divine: physical distance, absence, or separation cannot dissolve real love, because that love lives in the heart, not in proximity. If you are far from someone or something you love — a person, a practice, a place of worship — this verse says the connection still holds. Trust that love outlasts distance.

The verse

धेनु बछरा छोर जावे । प्रेम न छुटे सात ॥१॥

Literal translation

Dhēnu bachharā chōra — prēma na chuṭē sāta.

मराठी: धेनु (गाय) बछड्याला सोडून जातें — पण प्रेम सूटत नाहीं — सात (हृदयांत).

What it means

Sākhyā 21 of 30. The cow-calf bond: the dhēnu may physically leave the bachharā — but prēma does not release the sāta (the bond/heart). The bhakta-Hari bond is like cow-calf prema — physical separation cannot break it.
