Abhanga 1190
Water and a stone can sit in the exact same place, but the stone only ever gets wet on the outside — nothing soaks in. Tukārām uses this to describe hard-hearted people who sit through the same satsang, the same teaching, the same rain of grace as everyone else, yet remain unchanged underneath because their heart stays closed. Being physically present for wisdom or devotion is not the same as letting it actually reach you. The real question isn't whether you showed up, but whether you let anything in.
The verse
Literal translation
Pānī pāthara yēka ṭhōra — kōrana bhigē anga.
Word-by-word gloss
| Marathi/Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
What it means
Sākhyā 23 of 30. The pānī-pāthara contrast: water and stone in the same place — but the stone (kōra = dry/hard) gets wet only on the surface. The hard-hearted (kaṭhōra-citta) sit in the same satsang-rain as the soft-hearted but don't absorb.

For someone today
Water and a stone can sit in the exact same place, but the stone only ever gets wet on the outside — nothing soaks in. Tukārām uses this to describe hard-hearted people who sit through the same satsang, the same teaching, the same rain of grace as everyone else, yet remain unchanged underneath because their heart stays closed. Being physically present for wisdom or devotion is not the same as letting it actually reach you. The real question isn't whether you showed up, but whether you let anything in.
Where this applies
- When you attend a teaching or satsang but leave feeling exactly the same as when you walked in
- When you notice someone hearing wise advice repeatedly yet never letting it change their behavior
- When you catch yourself going through spiritual motions without truly opening your heart
- When you wonder why the same experience touches one person deeply and leaves another untouched
